At 1.36, he spoke about "the City of London...." Correction - The Palace of Westminster is NOT in the City of London. At 8.10 he said "....wound by hand..." It can be if desired, but now it is wound by electric motors. At 12.57 he spoke about the length of the swing. The length of the pendulum remains fixed but the Centre of Gravity is changed by adding weights to the bob. At 18.44 it actually struck an octave ABOVE.
I love how people can question it's accuracy when it literally records when it's off by a second. Also, naming the clock after Queen Victoria is something they 100% considered. She has probably has the most things named after her, or at least up there with Alexander the Great. But, it also seems likely they were never actually planning on giving the bells official names.
I remember a Columbo episode in London, he looks at big Ben, looks at his watch, and says something like; more than 100 years old and only two minutes slow
i dont think anyone has ever asked "for whom the bell tolls". the bell tolls because that's what it does it doesn't toll for individuals it bongs because people like knowing the time.
The tower was called The Clock Tower prior to Queen Elizabeth 2nd's Diamond Jubilee when it was renamed in her honour. The Great Bell (the biggest bell) was nicknamed Big Ben either for Sir Benjamin Hall who hung the bell or a famous boxer of the times called Benjamin Caunt when it was originally hung. As said in this clip neither of these tales have been proven true but I lean to Hall as Big Ben was his nickname prior to hanging the bell. Colloquially the tower has acquired the name Big Ben over time, especially by people outside of the UK. The tower itself has never officially been called Big Ben.
SCP-498 😉 I'm sure a man as a cultured as yourself (and I don't mean that sarcastically) is aware of the SCP Foundation, have you ever considered contributing to the mythos? (if you have, don't tell me, but as a "cosmic horror madman", I think you'd be right at home, even if you don't get paid for it)
I would rather have Karl hosting instead of appearing in “cameos”! If for no other reason than who has referred to anybody else as a Space Cowboy since 1980? I’m not Maurice or the Gangster Of Love, either.
Sorry but Winchester cathedral is not in London! I know most Americans think everything in the UK is in London but the UK is so much more than London.😂
Karl makes a couple appearances in this one, but he's now a script editor for the Top Tenz, Biographics, and Geographics. If you want to see Karl on camera, you need to look up the Wiki Weekends channel or dive into the Fact Fiend channel archives.
He had a falling out with the people who own Top Tens, Geographics, and Biographics. Left them about a year or so ago. He's started his own channels that do what Geographics and Biographics do. They're good.

I agree with Karl, Big Vicky would have been amusingly British to many.

So good to hear from Karl again! Great video!
Karl! We missed you!
No we don’t
Came here to say this!!

The tolling of the iron bell calls the faithful to their knees to hear the softly spoken magic spells
Cameos by Karl .... Made this one even more interesting
I am here for it.
Big Ben! One of the most iconic marvels of the UK! Thanks For this! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 😂🤣😂 😂😂😂
I remember a Columbo episode in London, he looks at big Ben, looks at his watch, and says something like; more than 100 years old and only two minutes slow
Classic Columbo.
The detective had a very old watch
One of the world's most famous landmarks that I hope to see in person someday
That was a very fun watch! The writing was extremely sharp!
Happy to see you again, Karl. :D Hope you're taking good care of yourself!
Loved the British jokes, Karl and will be referring to Boris the clown as 'The Great Bell' from now on. 🤣
Do not ask for whom the bell tolls
It tolls for three
three?
i dont think anyone has ever asked "for whom the bell tolls". the bell tolls because that's what it does it doesn't toll for individuals it bongs because people like knowing the time.
Bell I'm American and I get that. I laughed hard. Between Simon and Karl after watching a ton of their videos I get the reference.
"it's seven bongs!!"
You said that the E natural bell higher up was one octave below Big Ben. It’s one octave higher.
Three appearances from Karl Smallowood. Must be our lucky day.
I thought that "Big Ben" only referred to the clock itself and the structure itself is called the Elizabeth Tower?
Tne tower was only designated Elizabeth a few years ago. It is lnown globally as Big Ben

Does the Kremlin have onion domes? I thought that was St. Basil’s
A few
I thought that too... well, perhaps he was confusing 'onion domes' for 'bell ends'. The Kremlin has lots of those.
Anybody click because of the line in Pink Floyd's "Time"?
*ok, it's technically Breathe part 2
“it gets so hot our roads melt” is probably a way better explanation of the issue than the no air con thing
60 years ago, I was given a baby Ben clock. It woke me up for my first day of school.
Karl and Erik together. This was a great vidoe!

Which penny from which country? British? Irish? Canadian? New Zealand? Australia? Cook Islands? The Bahamas?
Guess...
Where'd you think?
@@HarryWessex No silly British, you never know
Pre-decimal UK pennies. I'm guessing and I know it's a leap, but it could be because those were the pennies on hand at the time the bells were hung 😂
As a Brit, I agree with Karl, and now I'm mad it's not called Big Vicky 😭
Big Ben seems like a massive bell
Elizabeth Tower

Good job Eric, but I do miss Karl.
Was the script written after watching all the Bill & Ted films? The narrator seems to be on his own "excellent" adventure.
Hi Karl!
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Onion domes? 🧐

One American talking about the most British creation of all time. While incorporating British humor. This is all very ironic.
Karl spotted! life is good
Please bring Karl back every so often!
Karl! How are you?
🇺🇸
Still no Karl with a “K”?

Karl has decided to retire from hosting videos.
@@resileaf9501 The sole exception being Wiki Weekdays.
I know Karl stopped making new Fact Fiend videos because it stopped being enjoyable.
Didn’t understand half of what Karl said
Karl popping in really ruins the flow of the video.
Really?
Where Simon? :(

@@batticusmanacleas510 yah I like his into the shadows I think it's called? To stuff.
Thanks ...I'd spent that long wondering if I was losing it ...mainly as I've lost it everywhere else 😢@batticusmanacleas510
The fact that he's left for so long and yet people like you seem to be buried under a rock
Wear Simon
Wares Simon
Where's Simon
Nope
