Denizens of the Chicago rock underground for over a damn decade, Axis: Sova began as the performing pseudonym for guitarist Brett Sova and his TR-66 Rhythm Arranger drum machine creating lo-fi, psyched out sonics. Over time and across several albums for God?/Drag City, the entity morphed and mutated in size and sound, expanding to a 3-piece power unit which toured across the USA and Europe, their pop-sense crystalizing over and over, continuously shattered by break-neck guitar solos.
Since their last full-length album, Shampoo You, the Axis: Sova vibe has shifted further from lengthy guitar duels over static, mechanized beats to tightly wound, direct and propulsive blasts of post-punk and hook-laden noise. Their new album, Blinded By Oblivion (coming October 6th, on God? Records), is the first to feature human drummer extraordinaire, Josh Johannpeter, accompanying colossal low-end mainstay Jeremy Freeze (bass), the aforementioned singer and shredder Brett Sova, and their array of drum machines. Produced by Ty Segall at Harmonizer Studios, Blinded By Oblivion is often ferocious and consistently catchy, rolled tight with high-energy construction. Icy lyrical perspectives, rendered in a sunshiny natural paradise (the clash of industrial steel and indelible nature is sonically palpable), transmit the fun and fraud of human polarities with urgency and an occasional eye roll - it's the human condition, and we're all Blinded By Oblivion.
