Welcome back to Pattern Poole TV!
In this tutorial, we give you a brief introduction to home handbag sewing on a domestic sewing machine.
Monica Poole has been designing handbags for over 20s and has designed numerous handbag sewing patterns. To celebrate them all being converted to PDF format, we have created this tutorial to kick off our handbag series with a bang.
In this tutorial, you will see how to make a baguette bag on a domestic sewing machine. A Baguette is a small compact handbag that is carried on a short strap; it was originally designed by the Italian fashion company Fendi in 1997. These small, sleek bags were a huge trend in the late 1990s and early 2000s and could be found in an array of colours and textures.
In recent years, the Baguette has made a comeback! This is our version. It’s a stylish shape with a top curved zipper, rounded at the bottom, a side gusset and a gathered strap. It’s a basic shape for you to personalise in your own way; add some pockets or change up the strap; it’s up to you!
This little PDF pattern and RUclips tutorial is a gift from us to you; we hope you like it!
Size:
Height: 15 cm (6”) high. Width: 23.5 cm (9 ¼”).
We would love to see your work

I need a bag that comfortably holds my wallet, keys, tissue & my glasses case. The glasses case is the deal breaker with most just not big enough! Think this bag might work. I will have to make one to see. Thanks for free pattern & the tutorial. Get tired of carrying a "tote bag"!😊
I think this is handbag is really gorgeous. Thank you for this tutorial - I will be making this bag for sure!! Beautifully filmed too, so clear and precise, just what we need. xx
Thank you for making this tutorial and for the free plans. I'm a newbie to this hobby, but i was able to easily follow along. I made this bag for my mother for Christmas this year and she loves it! 😊
I thought this is the best pattern ad set of instructions I have ever seen! Thank you
Thanks for the great feedback, glad you like the pattern ❤️
I’m making this bag now; nervously putting in the zipper.
I copied the pattern at 120%, and added 3 inches to the height. I also made the base 3 1/4 inches wide, and tapered the sides is the gusset to be like the 120% version at the top of the gusset. I’m using black upholstery fabric and will attach D-rings so I can attach an adjustable shoulder strap. 😃
Sounds great!
This is one of the coolest sewing tutorials I've ever seen! I'm definitely giving it a try with my sewing friends! Thank you for the tutorial and the free pattern!
How gorgeous! Also lovely to have coordinating fabrics with shades of apparel. Great tutorial, thank you 💝
I have been making bags for awhile, but am always trying to learn more. Slipping the foam based into a sleeve at the end, then stitching in place was a great method. I also love the method of sliding the webbing inside the strapping to create a decorative feature. Thanks. K
You’re welcome ❤️
Thank you for showing how to sew with foam interfacing. I've been doing it all wrong. Hope I can make this bag.
That is a very professionally finished bag, thank you for teaching your know-how in such a fantastic way and also for the free pattern. I would love you to have more bag patterns for sale on your website, please.
Enjoyable watching your sewing technique. Liked how you didn't rush the process.
Thanks
Thank you so much!
Ive made 3 of these so far. I love this pattern. thank you for sharing

Thanks for The tutorial! The best bag tutorial I had seen! ❤
Wow, thank you!
Thank you Thank you! I have watched several baguette bag tutorials trying to get all the tips I can to keep the zipper from getting wavy around the curve., and also to learn ways to ease the gusset in place without puckers. Your pattern and tutorial showed the clearest methods and brought flawless results. I am thrilled!
You are so welcome! Glad it was helpful.
The ribbon trick is so cool! Mental note for future projects! Great little bag!
Thanks
Beautiful bag! Very well done tutorial. Thank you.
this is the first tutorial that I see that actually shows how to cut the fabric nearly too :) I actually made a super similar bag a while ago (with a hidden zipper tho) and cutting the fabric was the hardest part. I didn't do this for some reason.
What a FUN project! I could never have done it without your tutorial. Thank you. I think I'll make some more!
That’s awesome ❤️

I just finished making this bag. I think it's my favorite bag that I ever made! I mostly followed along with the printed instructions on the pattern since that was more convenient for me, but even then it was still so easy to follow. Thanks so much for this tutorial.
That's awesome, thanks for the great feedback!
Lovely bag & thank your for the free pattern! What size needle & type of thread do you recommend for this pattern? I skimmed the instructions & didn't see these tips. Again, thank you for the pattern & fantastic tutorial😊
Thanks, you’re welcome! I use a size 80 or 90 jeans needle and regular all purpose polyester thread.
How can I buy that lining(Form fabric)?
can i know the purchase information or websites?
😂😂😂 I really want to make it!!!
thank you for the free pattern
You’re welcome!
Love, love this bag ,thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for the Baguette Bag pattern.
Q: When you clip the seam allowance on the curved top edge, do you also clip into the zipper tape? Thx. 🌷
Sometimes do and sometimes I don’t but I did on this bag.
Great tutorial!!! Thank you!!! What material the interface is?
Thank you! It’s a foam interfacing, there are quite a few brands like Annie’s Soft and Stable, Pellon Flex Foam, Bosal In R Form, other brands are listed in the requirements list.
Beautiful!!! I from Brazil
Good work ❤❤
Thank you so much 😀
Прекрасная работа . Спасибо за идею .
You’re welcome ❤️
Beautiful
Thank you a beautiful project ❤
You are so welcome!
This handbag is gorgeous! Is there a benefit to using foam interfacing vs fusible interfacing here in terms of durability? (baby designer here lol) Thanks! xx
Very nice bag❤❤
Thank you 😊
Hi! Is the foam piece essential, or can we use a thicker fabric in replace of the foam piece? Thank you!
TBH foam is an amazing interfacing for bags when used with a medium weight fabric. It's lightweight, flexible and makes the bag sit and hold its shape. You can try to substitute with a thicker fabric or different interfacing if you like. Try samples first to see what thicknesses your sewing machine can handle. My rule of thumb is: Light fabric - heavy interfacing. Thick fabric - light interfacing.
Love your pink pen. Is it chalk
Hello and thanks for the tutorial! Did I understand it correctly that you didn't glue the interfacing to the main fabric?
Thanks, yes that’s correct.
Absolutely stunning 😊xx
Thank you! 😊
Thanks so much for the pattern!🤗
Just to note, the link to your pattern on your home page works but the picture link in "free patterns" doesn't take you to the pattern. 💐
Thanks, you’re welcome, we’ll look into that.
If my machine sewed over two layers of foam I'd be very surprised!
Mine does very easily
Do u have a walking foot
Try a walking foot. Instead of foam interfacing, use another kind of woven interfacing. Check out other bag making videos for interfacing ideas.
Mine can't either. It's a Pfaff quilt ambition 2.0,it sucks with these kinds of layers
It’s very easy sewing through bosal or stylevil
