A standing salute to all the men and women who worked at the Holden Plant. What Shame on Australian History that such an Icon will never be built again. Lower your head and hand on Heart; - to the Australian Icon; - Holden.
Absolutely disgusting that the government stopped the production of Australian vehicles and allowed the import of overseas vehicles that destroyed our economy in manufacturing
Unions & Ford Oz/ GMH not listening to customers is what killed car production; also, us taxpayers forking out hundreds of millions of dollars to keep said companies afloat- which the money went to Ford & GM headquarters in the US anyways- wasnt a feasible longterm idea
Holden had themselves to blame for continuing to manufacture a Car NO ONE WANTED anymore...the Commodore...Consumers no longer wanted a big heavy RWD sedan anymore...the market had moved and Holden DID NOT...simple as that
@@Fantomx7g6 The problem was the lax fuel and emission laws which allowed GM and Ford to dump big roadhog trucks into Australia and make more money from that. It was a stitch up. They were never going to invest in a modern updated vehicle that people wanted. Just hoovered up all the cash handouts and left.
Thanks for the memories. I worked in Plant Engineering at the Elizabeth plant in the 1970s and as such I worked on projects in most of the plants at Elizabeth including Hardware, Trim Shop, Body Shop and Vehicle Assembly Plant (V.A.P.) R.I.P. Holden's.🚗🚔
Question for anyone who worked there, what is the tune you hear in the background in a lot of Elisabeth footage? It’s like a melody that keeps playing, quite hypnotic!
I bet a lot of people commenting here drive imported SUV' s and are whingeing about the closing down of our car building industry!! It's not just the government's fault , but also the buying public change in taste. I have always had Aussie built cars such as Kingswood , Valiant , Sigma , VK commodore, 2 magnas (still have one), Holden Cruze , and one of the last VF Commodores
GM allowed Holden to wither and die. The blame game for who killed Holden involves much speculation but it boils down to poor product decision making by GM in the US (rather than letting Australian engineers dictate new model choices), GM wanting to get out of right hand drive production markets and the silly Australian government pulling the subsidy the manufacturer was receiving (much lower in value than subsidies given by governments to other car makers). All these things, along with the GFC killing Pontiac (which Holden was supplying before the brand was ended) destroyed Holden. Holden had a long history of over ninety years of manufacturing. During WW2 it produced a great deal of armaments and other equipment to be used by troops. At one stage there were Holden plants in nearly every state of Australia and the company commanded fifty percent of the market share. Now it is all gone with thousands out of work (because the death of Holden also caused a knock-on effect, killing major parts suppliers as well). The proud Holden logo, the lion with its paw resting on the rolling stone of progress, is now dead. Vale Holden. Any Australian with a heart is saddened by your passing.
Holden closed up shop, Ford close up mfg., Toyota closed up mfg., Mitsubishi closed up mfg. The Australian Government made it too cost prohibitive for any manufacturer to produce cars in Australia, not just Holden. They made cars cheaper to import than to produce in country, even the last Holdens. We can blame GM for Holden, who do we blame for Ford skipping town(and country)? Toyota? Mitsubishi? The problem is that all of those other three had strongholds in other places, in other countries, while Holden did not. As for Pontiac, don't forget that exports continued with the Chevy Caprice PPV and the Chevy SS. As you said, it is indeed a blame game as to who is responsible for the Demise of Holden, suffice it to say there is plenty of blame to go around, and fingers can certainly be pointed in several directions. Regardless, their long storied history and tragic ending is no doubt a triumph to tragedy story, and it leaves a sad and bitter taste in the mouths of many who will always look back fondly and revere the brand and the incredible cars that it produced. RIP Holden, may the lions of your past forever roar in our hearts and on our streets.
How?...both Commodore and Falcon were Car's NO ONE WANTED...tha market had shifted away from Big Heavy RWD Family Sedans Decades earlier...simple as that
@@cadpeter7972 And GM's bad choice of having poor quality dated cars being built in the Daewoo plant, It consistently produced poor quality cars. In the end the customers had enough of the rubbish that was being produced and voted with their feet, purchasing from other manufacturers.
Seeing this is amazing but makes me wake up knowing every day my job is never guaranteed, anything can happen in this economy, i am replaceable and just a number. Keep ya eyes open Aussie's they would roll us all in heart beat just to line their pockets.
So sad to think that we had such a first class operation right here in Australia, producing cars that in the end, were as good as or better than anything coming out of Germany, all gone now thanks to GM and the Liberals, and the public who insisted on crap SUVs because fashion. If GM end up going under again and don't get bailed out, I"ll be a happy man.
BS...Holden just kept manufacturing a Car NO ONE WANTED...a big heavy RWD family sedan...Same as the Falcon...if a business doesn't move with the market...they go broke!...simple as that
Our Holdens far surpassed Amerikan vehicles in terms of reliability... 😂 Another part of the manufacturing industry destroyed. 😥 Hopefully maybe one day we might see a return to manufacturing (and not just cars)... :)
HOLDEN ARE TO BLAME for their own demise...the ONLY People that wanted a Commodore were Bogan's in western suburbs second hand...NO ONE ELSE WANTED a big heavy RWD Family Sedan anymore...the market and consumers changed...same thing happened to Falcon...those types of car's were from a bygone era...i saw the writing on the wall in the late 90s that Holden would go broke if they continued with the Bogandore
An Australia that no longer exists, where we could take raw materials and build/design/assemble technologically sophisticated products, now we are nothing more than a quarry for China :(
Nice casual clothes. Nobody working too hard. Just a few screws to fix. Three guys sharing the task. High Wages and Trade (?) Union Control. Added $15k to the cost of every Car.
We got Bathurst starting in few weeks 2024 that is bloody shameful only American made cars to race around the circuit ffs ive still got my 2011 falcon xr6 and its fantastic
LMFHO how many people to build one car - about 10 times more than build a Porsche - no wonder it failed and needed billions in federal government subsides - this car SHOULD have been built on a modern production line instead it was being built on something not greatly improved since the early 70s.
I wonder why such a movie? Just to see the tape work? Holden is not a premium brand. Just another car, millions on the roads. Regards ... I'm waiting for something really interesting.
Up until 12:27 it's footage of a pre production vehicle that must have been filmed by an engineer as filming/ photography was not allowed in the GM Holden plant unless for official purposes.. footage after 12:27 is of the last car ever produced at the GM Holden plant.
I will forgive you the arrogant comment because you are not Australian. For Australians this video is a historical document as it shows the end of a car company with over 90 years of history and manufacturing in Australia. As to whether or not it was a "premium" brand. I would put the last model Holden Commodore up against any German vehicle for quality and handling.

Haha, memories, this was on the new line, I left before that got put in, but I still saw a few blokes in this vid that I worked with back in the day.
The dash robot was impressive.

Does anyone know the location of the factory subwoofer in the VF sv6 storm?
Parcel shelf. You see them install it in the first 3 minutes
Same as all Calais VT onwards - the rear parcel shelf speakers are the subwoofers.
Good job
2nd saddest video I've seen, heartbreaking. Saddest video was when the stray cat didn't make it.
I got my license at Kempsey NSW March 1963 driving an FC Holden (hope I got the model right-two tone green I think)
‘63 would be an EJ Holden, maybe an early EH. FC was ‘58-59 ish.
I feel like 3 quarters of the bolts for the last commodore where left out and 0 sealant coz they had already ran stock out
😂
So little automation, no wonder it couldn’t make money. It’s a shame.

100% correct..both Holden and Ford just kept making Car's that consumers and the market did NOT WANT
Have you seen what a well kept V8 Commodore is going for these days??? These aren't owned or driven by 'Bogans' .. that was a myth.
