This is fascinating! Grandma Addie had a chicken farm and she was out of the business by the time I was born. She would tell me chicken stories and also how to slaughter them properly. I don't think I could do it. Can't wait til the little chicks hatch!
Thanks for bringing us on the adventure. Spring is certainly here. My daughter and I picked several small pails full of Dew Berries(like blackberries) and have made 4 pies and lots of seedless jam. We are sliced up from the stickers, but happy with our results.
I was trying to help you.....!!! The thermotor !!! and you said oh yeah lets get that in.LOL...You make us feel we are right there with you. I can not wait to see the chics. Thank You.!!!
I dry incubate, last hatch I had 50% with shipped eggs and 95% with quail eggs collected from my breeders. I have found keeping the eggs in half egg cartons makes hand rolling easier, and you don't have to remove them at day 18.
@dosdoggies I agree. Dry incubation is the most amazing thing that ever happened to my incubation experience. I went from fighting humidity to not worrying at all. I got roughly 40% traditional and 98% dry. It made a world of difference. Bev, I highly recommend looking into it if you havent already!!!
Those are good prices and the same product I bought..But I paid $189 for both before taxes! My incubator does not have a fan..I bought my incubator two years ago. I actually hatched turkey eggs in it as well I just put the eggs in every other egg slot. I hatched three out of 6 eggs..which I thought was pretty good. Hope this helps..I will do a new video in the spring when I am getting ready to hatch.
ive got some eggs in my incubator now they have been in for almost 14 days we candled some of them last night and can see the little chicks moveing around we are keeping all the hens we can hatch out but the roosters go to freezer camp and bbq camp but for the next 2 months im working at keeping the incubator runing non stop and thinking about getting a 2nd incubator just for hatching that way it makes clean up really easy and faster turn around cause you can be setting eggs every 18 days
Alright Now how cool is that! Your amazing! And yes you do make it look very easy. I am excited for ya. we always by ours from the amish. They lay in about 3-4 weeks. But they are 7.00 a bird. Maybe if I talk real nice to my two pet chickens they will hatch some babies for me. Thanks again for a great video and enlightening us out here in tube land!
Actually ..there is a toy out there that is a balloon that has water in it and it is a tube that turns inside out ( I hope that explains it) but you put a thermometer probe in the centre of THAT and it give you a more accurate reading of INTERNAL egg temps..I am going to try that this year!
18 days? Oh, the wait. lol. I'm also interested in how you care for the chicks until they're big enough to join the flock. How to you know which of your hens are getting too old? We've been getting different breeds each year to make it easier to tell which ones to cull but I would like to start collecting eggs to incubate or let a broody hen do the work.
LOL...I swear some days I can hear you guys shouting..SALT you forgot the salt! Thermometer!! Close the barn door! lol I am glad you enjoy my videos..I do them for you all!
18 days until I take out the egg turner..then I top up the water ..and close the lid not to be opened again until they are all done..humidity is crucial while hatching..I don't have a lot of chickens..only about 10..so it is easy to tell which are older because they are all cross breeds..I have about 3 to cull out..and since the rest have only be laying 7 months..I will keep them and breed them again next year..next year I will keep chicks for new layers. this year they are mostly meat.
at first I thought you made that until you showed the box it came in, good luck getting more then you expect to hatch. They should be ready by the end of the month right?
thanks for the video...i'm excited to see your babies hatch...i have just recently done a video on incubating chicken eggs too...i also have quail eggs in my incubator too. they should hatch on april 20. i made a video last night of me candling the eggs...it was soooo cool.. haven't gotten a chance to upload it yet...
I usually start earlier than this, and we have about 125 birds right now. We are going to up our flock of chickens to about 250 this year. And add more Pea foul and thurkeys and guinea foul. I have a mean tom turkey i need to replace so hoping for a new tom baby.
I have a sportsman 1202 holds 180 eggs in egg trays. I can get about 300 if I dont use the egg trays. I plugged mine in yesterday and then turned on the turner today. All is working like a pro probably going to set 60 eggs tomorrow then another 60 in 7-10 days and so forth.
I also run my temp at 100.1 to 101.0 with a humidity of 50 to 60 % then let it drop to 25 % before I add water until day 15 then I up the humidity to 70 % for day 15 thru finish hatch. I usually get my chicks hatched out starting day 18 and finish day 20. if you can find a way maybe you can add bits of sponge (new and clean) to the water area to help keep the humidity. Can't wait for you updates.
Tina Madden has do you recommend adding wet sponges I’m not clear do I fill every part of the bottom of the incubator ?please help , thanks for your help.
(1) Hey again Mrs V! I have a question and a suggestion today. 1. Suggestion - Have you considered using either a meat thermometer or a probe thermometer instead of the plastic gizmo? Using either one, you could poke it thru the styrofoam down at the level of the eggs and you'd have the read-out on the side or top instead of inside trying to read it thru the little window. (To start it, poke it OUT from the inside to get the hole in the right place and then you can put it in from the out-side.)
I have a question about hens. My husband and I are purchasing 6 female chicks because we want to grow them and have laying hens. My question is should we get a rooster to make sure they lay eggs or will they without a rooster? Also, should we buy grown hens or chicks?
When the light goes off isn’t when the incubator is up to temp just the thermostat you have to give the incubator a couple hours to get the eggs up to temp keep checking as long as the thermometer doesn’t go over never take the thermometer out
Hey again Mrs V! (Pt 2, The Sequel) 2. QUESTION - When did you get this egg incubator? I found info on google and a link to Amazon ("GQF Hova-Bator Thermal Air Flow Egg Incubator" for $64 & "Hova-Bator Incubator Automatic Egg Turner - Quail to Duck Egg" for $50.50) so (I think) I know what I'm looking for... Would you please be so kind to put the product name & Item# in the description, along with info on where you bought yours from and how much, etc? (Or you could do nother video if ya like!)
If you want you eggs soon..buy 19 week old ready to lay birds..the chicks you will have to raise for 19-20 weeks before they will begin to lay..you do NOT need a rooster unless you want to hatch them eventually. If you want your hens to KNOW you and be used to you..and you want to know they were raised well and happy..buy chicks. Hope this helps?

anytime!
I got them at a feed supply and garden centre store in Ottawa, called Ritchies feed & Seed

you can use fine steel wool to remove dirt ect, dont over do it, but a light sanding wont hurt the eggs at all
LOL...I swear some days I can hear you guys shouting..SALT you forgot the salt! Thermometer!! Close the barn door! lol I am glad you enjoy my videos..I do them for you all!
I'm such a city girl. I'm never seen an incubator like that. :)

Do you have a rooster? I am VERY excited!

I just noticed I typed "When" and what I meant was "Where did you get it?"
Grr. The goofy mistakes are the most embarrassing, aint they?
