    when i first started the hobby i didn't really like brachypelmas. part of it was the drab tlitocatls then in the genus, the other part was the zealots trying to force a beginner species on me. now that i've raised lots of species from all around the world, i can really appreciate the red leg tarantulas of mexico, they're in my top 3 favourite genus now.

    Tom - always a fantastic and thorough video. I got all of my Brachys as slings. It has been a real treat watching them grow and I have lots of other T’s to keep me preoccupied while these guys grow. My Hamorii is just a darling. He’s bold! Sits out in the open no problems and doesn’t bolt or run when I’m messing around in its cage. My Klassi is a shy little thing but a darling nonetheless. Thank you so much for sharing your Brachy collection!

    • @TomsBigSpiders

      Thank you so much! Although they take forever to grow up, I also think that it is totally worth it. I wish my hamorii was as bold, although she DOES seem to be calming down. And my B. klaasi has been a wonderful surprise. :)

    Tom, I just wanted to say thanks for your videos. I just got home from a huge exotic show in Sacramento 100k SQ ft and 110 vendors. I got 2 more Ts and with my luck, and being gone 22 hours, my T Albopilosus molted while I was away, I'd been waiting. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Anyway, I bought 2 more Ts, new world, I'm not ready for old just yet. I got a Cyriocosmus elegans, who is past it's 8th molt, the tiny slings were too scary, she's about an inch or just over. I also bought a Nhandu chromatus, a half inch. I'm so excited, and my husband even wanted one, so they are technically mine, but he wanted the C elegans. I just appreciate your approach on the videos and the podcast. I am entertained by your videos, but I'm taught valid information while watching. I love the other channels too, so it's not a knock on them. Thank you very much for your time. I still think you should put in an ad at the end of the video and the podcast, that way, people could skip and if they don't, you could make a little extra cash for the time you spend, though I know you aren't doing this for the money.

    • @TomsBigSpiders

      Hi, Callie! Man, that show sounds amazing! We don't really get anything that large around here. Sounds like you made out great...what an awesome haul! And that's fantastic that your husband now wants one...sound like you've won him over. haha And thank you so very much for the kind words. :) As for the ads, I just don't want or need them. It honestly not what I do this for. I do appreciate the suggestion, though!

    My first two spiders back in March were a B.Smithi and B.boemei. the Smithi was only about 3/4” and has now molted twice and is 1.25” and in premolt again! The Boemei was about 1” but molted 3 days after I got her, she has now molted 3 times since March and is just under 2”! Both are insanely skittish and bolt to their burrows when disturbed. The only time my Boemei has kicked was rehousing her. I also have 2 Albiceps, a now 3/4” sling (just molted on Thursday) and a 2.5” juvie I received as a freebie. Definitely fascinating spiders and amongst all I have some of my favorites!

      @@TomsBigSpiders Yes, I am! I've read too often that they don't need water dishes and I'm thinking... some of these tarantulas are from the Amazon... where it can rain a lot. So it never made sense that they wouldn't need water. Also because hydraulics. lol I found that enlightening. Also, the impaction which adequate water might help. A varied diet instead of just relying on one food source. And DKS (I'd never heard of that). So I'm learning so much. Also, the docility of certain species and how they have a bit more spunk as Slings or Juveniles. Your channel has been the most enlightening and for the first time in my life, I will be checking out a podcast. 😅

      Hi, Charlotte! I had nothing to do with the chapters on this video, so the misspellings are not mine. I think that with older ones, RUclips assigns them using the captions (which are usually laughably wrong), or someone puts them in the comments or something. Honestly, I don't know HOW some videos eventually get chapters, because I've only done it on a handful. If I have time later, I'll try to fix them. *sigh. haha Thanks so much!

    Hey Tom, with such a huge collection it’s hard to imagine the amount of money it would take to provide them all substrate. Substrate can be pretty expensive. What substrate do you recommend that is cheap

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 года назад +1

      Hello! If you want to go super cheap, you can used plain old topsoil (I've used Scott's and Timberline myself). You can also buy large 10 lb. bricks of coco fiber and rehydrate it. It makes several gallons of sub. Peat is also cheap and can be bought in large bales for about $10, although I'm reading that it's not exactly friendly to the environment. Or, you can create mixes of all three. For about $25 you can buy a coco fiber brick, a bag of topsoil, and a bale of peat and mix them together for a whole heck of a lot of dirt. Hope that helps!

    So strange to hear how slowly your hamorii grew. I got mine as a sexed female at 3" in August 2022 and already she is pushing 5" and has molted 3 times putting on at least .5" each molt. I keep my T's pretty warm though. They are in my reptile room which usually stays at the high 70's low 80's during the day. I usually feed her 1 large cricket once or twice a week, unless she's looking too plump, then we skip a meal. I try to keep her abdomen a reasonable size (slightly larger than her carapace) I don't power feed by any means. I think I'm mostly just lucky with this one lol.
    I just picked up teeny-tiny .25" slings of several more Brachypelma species (baumgarteni, emilia, auratum, boehmei, and hamorii) so it will be very interesting to compare the growth rates of each species being kept in the exact same conditions.

    Tom, probably not a great video idea but if you could talk for like five minutes on your histories with snakes or as I am now breeding hognose. Me and my wife were wondering if, since we have heard you say you used to have like 40 snakes and now you are balls deep in the tarantula game and never talk about it anymore I was wondering kind of what you did and what happened, I don’t really remember you saying it on the podcast but I’m sure in the 170 he probably mentioned it before all I remember is vague discussions

      Hey, Jake! I think that I spoke about it briefly once, but never got into it. I can cover that! :)
