To easily remember the notes, use the phrase "GBD FACE." This stands for the notes in thirds (skipping over one line or space). Then fill in a skipped note in your head when you need it.
The lowest line of the bass clef starts the pattern, and it repeats up the staffs. For example, the bottom line of the bass clef is G, the next line up is B, then D, F, A, C (middle), E (bottom line of treble clef), G, B, D, F (the top line of the treble clef), and so on.
Spaces work the same way but start with F, which is the space below the bottom line of the bass clef. Moving up, the spaces are A, C, E, G, B, D, F, and so on. This method also helps with notes on the ledger lines.
Then to make it even faster, remember these 3 landmark notes: bass clef F (4th line from bass clef bottom or 2nd line from the top of bass clef), treble G (2nd line from bottom of treble clef), and high G (the space above the top line of treble clef). These are easy to remember because the line between the 2 dots of the bass clef symbol is bass clef F and the line inside the spiral of the treble clef symbol is treble G. Use the landmarks as starting points for the pattern.
I'm over 50 and trying hard to read piano sheet music, thank you for teaching us your knowledge. Don't have much time so I shall become your student on my vacation
For the first time, I have learnt some thing. Thanks alot
Thank you, Maestro. Nice video, but this system was kind of confusing for me and long time I could not remember notes until I found system from one lady from England.
She is teaching to distinguish lines and spaces. You read notes only on lines or only in spaces and that way you see FACE GBD, endlessly repeating itself, no matter where you are. You may remember only a few landmarks (like F in base clef, G in treble and so on) and from this landmarks, you will see very easy (on lines or between) FACE GBD, it helped me better than anything else.
