DUUUDEE!!! You are so amazing for this hack! I just spent $50 on 40 lbs of sound that I am returning! So glad I didn’t open and rinse them yet! You are SO my favorite!
Thank you for this video, I was too paranoid to try out a sand substrate in fear of clogging my shower drain while rinsing it but after watching this I bought some of the blue mesh and followed your instructions, yay for not messing up the drain!
Bought a bag a BDBS yesterday and searched how to rinse it. Found a short and to the point video of exactly what I'm doing and you my freind found a new subscriber. Thanks.
Thanks for the comment about covering the drain first! I wondered about that. I am hoping for a warm enough day to do it outside - but it's winter and it may not happen when I am ready. I planned to do it in the utility sink but with the concern about the drain, I may do it outside even if I'm freezing. :-)
Going to tractor supply tomorrow! Soooo happy I found your channel! Just wasted a lot of time with $25 for pet store fine sand! What a pain! Thank you!
I've always used gravel in my aquarium and I'm changing to sand just for my corydora catfish and hillstream loaches because its best for them. I was wondering how to clean the sand but after watching this I now know its just the same as cleaning my aquarium gravel so thanks for this video 👍
Never done sand before, but I've had fish tanks for years. I've always done gravel but I've been wanting to change the substrate for my Cory cats (they keep digging and hitting the gravel against the glass). Thanks for the video! Also your setup literally made me gasp
I just bought river sand. It was soooooo dirty, it took me ages to wash it and after 40 min I literally gave up. Water was still orange. My fresh tank is now cloudy but I put fine filter wool inside the filter and some carbon. Will also do daily water changes. I have tons of plants and no fish in it yet. It's my first dirted tank so fingers crossed it works
I'm planning to setup an 5g aquarium with a sand as substrate. I also want it to plant some aquatic plants but not heavily planted just a few, so how much sand do i need to use? Is 1kg of sand would be enough?
Yes! Same here… sand from a pet shop, rinsed 3-4 times, looked clean, tipped into a new tank and water is still cloudy after a week 😩🤯🤯🤯 clean but not as clear as I would like to. Is there anything I can do to fix this or start the process again? BTW I have added quick water start and bacto start straight after adding the water. No fish … just waiting for the water to be ready. Thanks
So i have a 75 gallon tank and i just bought 4 bags of sand from pet smart and i didnt rinse the sand ...i just dumped the 4 bags in and added water and my water is real cloudy...is that normal??
I recently got this sand and it appears to be crushed up glass and has small strings of glass mixed in. I don't know if that is going to be an issue but I guess I'll figure it out.
I have a bag of blue colored sand I bought at the pet store and I’ve been washing it non stop for over and hour and the water is still turning blue and idk if it will ever stop bleeding the blue color? Will it? Or should I just throw it out and get a refund?
From what I understand, beach sand is very dirty, full of all sorts of bacteria that could harm not only the fish, but also people, but it’s apparently possible to clean beach sand by baking it, but I’ve never tried..
My LFS’s cheapest bag of aquarium sand was $12 for 5 lbs! I bought some pool sand from a hardware store which was $12 for 20lbs. Not the best deal but I feel like I dodged a bullet.
You really gotta watch out for black sand a lot of people have had issues where the black paint would get all over their hands and bath tubes and stain anything it touched lmao. I'm not sure about the Tractor Supply sand he mentions but might try it next time.
I bought sand from petco. Removed fish. Changed sub. But didn’t wash my sand. My sand has loads of clumps and it’s very unpleasant to look at what can I do.
How’d you deal with it? I have the same problem. I rinsed mine for about 20 minutes but didn’t know you were supposed to wait until it runs clear. Not my tank water is super cloudy.
@@positiveegg2827 well. If your just worried about the cloudiness. Water changes will fix the issue. Sand is very hard on your filtration systems. IT’s recommended that you turn your filter off when replacing the substrate. I had air bubbles and clumpy sand. I solved that issue by gently agitating the sand with a stick or your hand. I also aggressively gravel vacuumed my sand substrate which removed a lot of that air in the substrate.
Keep a close eye though on your parameters. I had a nitrite spike in my tank after replacing my substrate. Be sure to dose stability and seachem prime to detoxify any of those harsh chemicals if they become an issue.
why make is so complicated? Just go to your backyard or balcony and rinse it. no drains clogged. buddy if you take proper sand, you need at least 20 rinses to make it clear. this is misleading
@@celestamccurry4627 do you know what the trick is, was it once or twice then put everything in including the water, the motor in the tank will slowly clear the water with time
I've heard of people saying that they found metal shavings in that sand before. I just got a 50G 😂 that comment regret your life💀🪦 But after hearing that about the blasting sand scares me away from it. Also I found another way get a siphoning hose and a sink put a towel down and when you're done take the towel and shake it outside.

I got seachem fourite for $155 for 64lbs 💀
Having my first go in a 55. I’m using standard play sand. I really appreciate the advice on pouring rinse water down the drain. Good to know!
How did it go? The play sand is the worst one to use.
I have used pool filter sand before but never tried blasting sand. I will definitely try it now. I love the black sand look. Thanks for the tip.
You’re right, this was very simple. But I’m still glad you posted it, thanks lol!
You just saved me $40 sir, and for that liked/subbed... The blasting sand has gone up a couple of dollars, but I got 50lbs for $12.99... Thank you...
aw dude she is adorable bless you and yours also pour the water into the toilet to avoid clogs
Love the entertainment stand!! That’s a really cool idea!

Thank you! I got tube sand and I’ll be old and gray before I get it rinsed enough to use.
Hows that TV holding up with it being right above the evaporation of the tanks? 7mo ago is a significant amount of time for an update!?
Great video, BDBS is amazing in my experience with it!
Carpet in the bathroom is crazy but appreciate the tips💯
Been rinsing my sand for like 4 hours and it’s still not clear
😂😂
I bought the red bag and it’s so fine it’s sucks but I’m still gunna use it, why wouldn’t you use it?
Why are all your tanks cloudy? Not sure if it’s the camera or lighting.
Are they always going to look like a bit cloudy with sand?
Thanks!
Will this work if I use a Lowes bucket? Or will it work better with the orange bucket?
What do you think about the bottle method when adding sand to the tank ?
I'm planning to setup an 5g aquarium with a sand as substrate. I also want it to plant some aquatic plants but not heavily planted just a few, so how much sand do i need to use? Is 1kg of sand would be enough?
Exactly how long would I have to wait for the cloud to clear if I forget to clean my sand substrate?

@@monikita333 try using polyfil and carbon in your filter and keep changing out water every couple days it will clear up.
@@monikita333 I recommend using very fine dilter pad in the filter it will dirty very fast but after a few days will clear it up nicely.
Back in the day use to get free sand fome lakes & or ponds. Now a days I like to mix sand whit grave for a more natural look.
River sand is good

Thank you
Can this sand be used for geophagus species fish? They sift sand through the gills. I wonder if this would be safe for them?..
Yes I have the same fish and they’ve grown up over a year with the substrate
Question can you use ocean sand from a beach

Polyfil cheap at Walmart would work. The sheets of it

2 min
Does the tank water evaporate on to the tv?
Thank you for showing the shower way. I live in an apartment so I can’t use a hose
