50 years ago Burt Lancaster and Gene Hackman jumped out of an airplane....well their stunt doubles did, but still! 2:43 stuntman was injured here, but got up to finish scene.
Burt Lancaster, as skydiver Mike Retting in "The Gypsy Moths": "I had a friend in the Army, a sergeant, parachutist for about twenty years. He used to say that jumping was not only a way to live, but also a way to die. Damn few things are."
Trivia: Scott Wilson's stunt double (yellow jumpsuit) broke his collarbone on that landing. But he still managed to get up and finish the scene. What a trooper!
When I was jumping in the early-mid '70s I wanted to find someone who'd paint my white Bell helmet in that checkerboard pattern. Never did.
This movie and then The Wild Geese led to me eventually skydiving.
