With 39 mph wind gusts and an elevation gain of 4,285 feet, Red Bull Athlete Tim Johnson becomes the first person to ever bike up Mt. Washington Auto Road in the winter, where his father watched him win the 2000 Summer hill climb 11 years ago. He rides a modified Fat Bike 7.2 miles in -19 degree temperatures against unpredictable conditions in the “World’s Worst Weather".

Gave me goosebumps. I'm sure your dad is proud wherever he may be resting. Thanks for sharing it with us.
What an epic mental, physical and spiritual ride that you've made, to make it to the summit must have been a complete overload of your feelings, what an achievement.
I can attest to the fact that he's not the first to ascend Mt. Washington auto road on a bike in the winter. A friend and I biked it under similar conditions in November, 2003 (I was on a 26"er with v-brakes - yikes). Half-way up my water was frozen solid, and I rapidly lost body heat at the summit with 70 mph wind gusts. Biking this road is prohibited and the crew up top were none-to-happy as we reached the summit (though they did take our photo as they'd never seen anyone bike up in the winter). Epic ride, with one sketchy descent!
you have link for the photos?
If it isn't on Strava it didn't happen ;)
Nothing better, than mountainbiking with your own mechanic, a filmcrew and a dozer to prep your track.
Put a moving story and some melancholic music in the background and you have a redbull movie.
I mean to be fair on that mountain in the winter nobody has any business near the summit alone. nobody.
Sorry but I call bullshit. I have done plenty of winter hiking in NH and so have plenty of others. It is in fact quite common.
This whole movie is underwhelming. A 2 hour bike ride in the cold? I could do that easily. I hiked Lafayette and Owls Head 5 days ago in a 22 mile hike maybe Red Bull should sponsor me too.
If you want to see incredible biking, go watch danny macaskill’s imaginate - now that’s impressive.
I too have done a lot of hiking, skiing and climbing in the Whites, but what he did is an ass kicker.
Hard to think that 6 years has passed since this epic edit.
Now let's see the descent!
+bhMTB - he rode down in the tractor - with heat.
+James S yeah lol i figured. that -19 degree weather would have torn him apart.
Nothing takes the wind out of my sails like the wind does. No matter what I'm doing(skateboarding/snowboarding/biking/running/swimming/surfing) when the wind is pushing against me...I loose my mind. couldn't imagine trying this with that kind of wind. That guy is tough as nails
LOL THAT SNOT BLAST AT 1:33 LMFAO
Simultaneous dual farmer blows...that's some sick skill!
Hahahahahahhaahha I CANT STOP LAUGHING!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😭
You sir, are amazing. Your dad would be proud.
Loved the fact that you had a Cannondale Fat bike! I ride a Cannondale F29 carbon 4. I have thought of getting the fat bike for winter riding. Great video!
A video about talking about the event. That really made me appreciate the effort...
Awesome job Tim......I'm sure ur Dad is totally smiling.
I planned a vaca through NH VT and Canada on my bicycle and this Mt was supposed to be my last "triumph" of my trip.
that was AFTER a 100 mile bike race. well 2 days after actually.
the guards at the bottom said no way that day. that it was too windy. that it wasn't safe for bicycles that day. or the rest of the week and I didn't have the xtra days to wait. I was so bummed I couldn't climb Mt Washington. I packed extra brake pads and tubes for the trip down. oh well. that was 30 years ago. that old saying that " there's no time like the present" ..... ya. I never got another chance to ride it.
Congratulations Tim on being the 1st to ride it.
Atta boy Timmy, local hero
Drinking Red Bull before an effort. What a joke.
Other than that, nice job Tim.
+Dédé LABINOUZE Redbull can filled with water :P
+Dédé LABINOUZE lol its more of a promotion thing. its sorta sponsoring him the sport he loves
+Dédé LABINOUZE Dont drink that garbage :)
Well ya know, it is on RedBull's RUclips channel, so they have to do product placement somewhere and it is also the fact that he's sponsored by them.
+BALLZTOOYOUUGOODSIRR yeah but dont drink it
I forgot Ascent meant going up
This is crazy yo! I live near there. Amazing to see my home lands in a feature like this.
good for Tim...that climb is hell in ideal conditions
Epic ride for sure. Beautiful
Great video, i love bike, road bike, fix gear, Montain bike, fat bike, i have a cyclocross bike
Respect!
great story and effort
Huh, pretty cool. I've hiked this mountain but I might want to bike it now.
That's sick I live only about 20mins away from MT Washington
put spikes on it and throw it on a downhill track
+2manyusarnames you don't want to ride down 4000ft in -19F
It's All about the ambition, and obsession of doing something that never been accomplished before.
And consistency: is the key.
Such an inspiration!!
he must have really strong legs to pedal against head on wind on such an incline
+PilgrimTitan yeah it showed him producing a consistent 220-230 watts of power. that's enough to run a small computer. that's enough power to charge an iphone 6s about 67 times
+PilgrimTitan uuhhh, yeah?
Yeah bitch u cant read or what
PilgrimTitan I just thought that all those things you said were kind of implied
+PilgrimTitan hahaha eat a sneakers
I'd say that a great time considering its winter and the conditions
He demostrado SIEMPRE a las de mi alrededor que mi cabeza era la mejor puesta y he añadido algunas dotes físicas.
Well done Tim. Hard one, bit it's the memory that counts.
AWESOME!
I rode our mountain trails yesterday is 1 foot and a half in snow on a normal mountain bike.
I made it to the summit because his spirit was amazing just that. Riding against that wind gusts is the most wearing out element when you´re riding a fat bike. With the proper apparel and bike you can deal with cold and terrain. Gust winds is just up to your training = power , nothing else...
3 mayor mistakes:
1. Wrong bike, you can´t ride such bike, you´ve gotta ride a Farley 9.6 or any other great carbon bike with 27.5" wheels and a real fork and great frame. This cannondale half fork is a joke even more for a fat bike
2. You gotta have low pressure if you wanna get traction in such track, period. They figured out too late when the guy was already toasted. Better go tubeless to reduce at least 1lb per wheel and you can reduce the pressure down to 3lbs easily.
3. You gotta have studded tyres if you knew already you´re rolling on shinny ice slab. And better go with Bontrager´s 27.5x4.5 studded period. 45nrth is great tire but just 4".
was expecting downhill in the end..
+Dmitry Fatiev Way too slippery to go downhill - especially with such a wind speed.
and now the world is a better place. humanity is saved.
I hope some good can't out of this for all humanity not just one guy.
Great choice of bike, no better pal on a ride like that.
Yay, NH!
awesome bro, congrats!
Memorable video of Phi Phi Island
Let s go for the 5 000 000
I'm just imagining the wind blowing uphill, and he's trying to bike down it, but the wind is blowing him back up the hill
+Amazing Awesomeness Oh, he didn't actually bike down it. lol.
Stud the tires next time and take it downhill! Pretty cool I'd like to bike mt washington. I've hiked it before with 90mpg winds at the summit, fun times!
He said the tires were studded.
coldest I have ever been out riding was actual air temp at -58 celcius and with wind chill factor of -80....let me know if anyone else out there has ridin in colder weather....
Yes. Me. I once road in -79 celcius or -129 celcius with the wind chill.
a job well done .
Nice!
Does anyone know why they say it’s 48% grade when the auto road peaks at 20%, with consistent 12%?
fat bikes are mountain bikes. good stuff
Single leg fork;
A W E S O M R
its Lefty from Cannondale, Google it to more infos.
its really awesome
Shoutout to New Hampshire tho!!!
That looks like about the least fun one could have on a bike
I was reading all the other comments and then I seen yours and I just started laughing but it's so true
Great things are never great while you are doing them, just how it is. take care
Why not use studded 45nrth?
the part where he rides down this same road would be more awesome.
Can't you walk up the mountain at that speed?
esi grips the best
Bet it was amazing on the way down :)
+nVr In the crew truck.
+nVr If he wasn't getting any traction while going up, it would be pretty dangerous going down fast without any though..
+Axel B That's why he rode in cab down.
+BariumCobaltNitrog3n - - Exactly
where are the spiked tires??
How does someone have that little weather protection at -19 w/ 49 mph winds
He definitely went to leg day... twice!
Wait a second, the mountain is not even 2000 m high and he was the first one to ride it up on a bike?
Did you ride back down?
I ride at 2psi...I climb stairs and have endless grip at that level, but I'm a light rider so prob not everyone can take advantage of the low pressure..
Awsome
have you seen these snot?
Are there gears on that?
I wonder why he did not use tires with metal thorns in some of the rubber knobs, even if they were fat, for better traction.
More power to him for the accomplishment but not very "Red Bull".
+UrbanLikwid It may not have been exciting to watch, but it was indeed dangerous -- that is "Red Bull"
aw I wanted to see how the descent looks like... Nice achievement though!
As if they didn't show that! He probably got a lift in the snowcat
Seems to me it would be more efficient running carbon stiff Forks and wearing wind shell pants?
What brand is that red windbreaker of his?
Drinking Red Bull before an effort.
That looked miserable. But glorious.
What Garmin was used?
What is the fatbike he use???
What bike was that?
Todavía hay más de uno que se cree que tiene que decir lo que debe ocurrir. Si no lo dicen ellos no se puede hacer. Algunos necesitan de ecuaciones para ver si lo que digo es verdad.
Which fat bike is that...brand
cool
did he ride down the mountain?
why does he have only 1 side on his shocks
+Skywolf ︻气デ═一 weight reduction
+Skywolf ︻气デ═一 Cannondale Left bike
minute 1:33
People on Strava be like, "Time to fly to New Hampshire."
what that bike
Sir plz donet me one
After 25 years of racing and mountain biking I still don't get the one sided fork. If your hammering they are going to deflect...
I have 3 Leftys.....I can report no flex at all. Try one out you will love it
Actually stiffer than a two leg fork because of the tube diameter. No deflection, stiffer and lighter.
630
Why?
"My temperature is dropping." Because he's not wearing proper winter clothes! And how many cameramen were there shooting video of this "feat"?
Why isn't there a two-wheel drive bike?
no way, he rode up a fire road!
Good video! I hope that my video will be as good as yours.
Hello from Russia!
gratula
Did he at least get to go down the hill?
5
как называется эта вилка с одной штаниной
+Егор Блинов с одной ногой вроде так и называются, хотя я могу ошибаться, я профан в этом деле
Lefty
Actimei спасибо
why you have half fork
Samu Tricks its cannandales trade mark there called leftys
Three years from now the record will be under an hour. But sweet Job regardless
+Isaac McDaniel The record in the summer is held by a more-than-likely juiced up Tom Danielson (currently suspended) @ 49'24"...so I doubt in 3 years the winter ascent will be anywhere near an hour flat. This is something a lot of pros have done as well e.g. Tyler Hamilton won the summer race 4 times (also juiced (probably, banned twice), and of Lance Armstrong fame (he basically was the straw that broke the camels back, and brought LA down), an ex-Olympic gold medalist (stripped)). At least not in proper winter conditions.
+Darran Cronshaw ty for the info
tough guy. but i don't like the lefty fork, it looks really ugly to me.
The world's worst weather because it is in America?!
+Geoff Waugh No, but read about it. Used to hold the record for highest recorded wind speed, now only 2nd fastest. It is really cold and 'always' windy in the winter. It sits in between 3 prevailing weather systems, which is why the weather is so cold for such a low mountain...only 2000m but often colder than Everest at 8900m. It's the windchill that's bad. This ride had 49 mph wind and -19F, which is -58F or -50C...that is really quite cold. I climbed/hiked it one winter (not up the road but up the Lion's Head trail) and got blown over and down a slope, was lucky that I didn't fall/roll/slide too far. My jaw also froze.
Well, I can't argue with facts....!
Moi je l'ai monter avec mon Cbr125 ...
