Bageshri raga found widespread popularity in Carnatic Music by 20th century only. the Hindustani ragam was said to have been first sung by Miyan Tansen, the celebrated court singer of the Emperor Akbar in the sixteenth century! In our carnatic music system said to be derived from the equivalent Melakarta of Kafi thaat, the 22nd Melakarta called Kharaharapriya. Since its devoid of panchamam n rishabam in the ascending scale./ie. an audava-sampurna ragam, it is classified as a janya ragam. Reminded of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal's "Gopala bhaktim me dehi" in Bageshri ragam., recently listened the rendition of the same by Amrutha Venkatesh -Swathi Festival/at the Navarathri Mandapam, Thiruvananthapuram in October 2015. Also listened 'Kanden Kanden SItaiyaik-kanden Raghavaa " the krit by Arunaachala Kavi, sung by Bombay Jayashree'.Further, I did listen a wonderful rendition of a beautiful composition tuned in Bageshri {on Mahaperiyava, Shri Jagadguru Chandrashekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal, composed by Akkarai S Sornalath ) by a promising young woman vocalist based in Chennai named Jayanthi Iyer ( Jayanthi Swaminathan ) - " Karunai Kadale Chandrashekara". '(kshIra) sagara shayana vibho prabho' s the erstwhile maestro MDR's famous composition in the Bageshri ragam, originally a Hindustani classical ragam. Prince Rama Varma presented a lovely rendition in his superb tone and diction. Chittasvoroms would have added beauty ....Best wishes ...Best wishes!
Heard this many times over...even by other singers like KVN, Sreevalson Menon, Ramakrishna Murthy...But Prince has rendered it the most beautifully, obviously after the master himself.
Superbly sung. The best I had ever heard of this song. I am a great fan of this beautiful raag and continue to hear from all singers including hindustani. Well done Prince.
what a beautiful composition of varada daasa M.D.R , Rendered , so nicely ,in slow tempo , by the great Price Rama varma , dwells in the heart. blissful.
The very first time I listened to this song [which is actually a while ago :-)], my mind became silent and experienced a deep relaxation. The diction, pace, pauses used, intonation of key phrases and most importantly the bhAvam in the rendition has brought out the best of the aspects for wholesome listening experience.
Really this is the way of rendering the most beautiful and pleasing Telugu composition of a Malayali Vaggeyakara of unparalleled devotion and commitment to wards the literal composition
Varma ji was the first person after M.D.Ramanathan to sing this. In 1986! Palghat K.S.Narayanaswamy learned this from him and taught him Thyagaraja Gurum in Kedaram in exchange. But Varma ji had not started singing in public yet at the time and the song came to be associated with KVN. It is incredible to see how beautifully Varma ji has taught this, even to hundreds of basic level students! ruclips.net/video/OvwQrjuyI3g/видео.html
The beauty of the Krithi is whoever sings this it is very nice to listen..... and I have listened so many times each time I listen I feel like listening one more time. Thanks a lot sir
O my God. The mrdangam and Ghatam players are absolutely delightful when they play when they actually do not play at all. Their silence is more musical. Kollengode S Venkataraman
I am not sure, but Varma ji mentioned to me that because many people had made requests for this song, he might be teaching it during this camp. ruclips.net/video/OZ5OdHtIgBQ/видео.html
How many people here would know his difficult it is to play mrdangam for such a slow-paced song? Great mrdangam vidwan!!!

His mother tongue was Thamizh / Sanskrit / Malayalam then came to Chennai and learned Telugu.
