I always loved that you get to see Minas Tirith briefly in Fellowship, and they don't even explain it, or where Gandalf went. Only the LOTR nerds knew lol
That's because Peter Jackson filmed all 3 movies simultaneously to ensure continuity of the trilogy. I'm glad he did this because most directors would shoot films individually and then release them, but by doing it this way the film's continue the vast epicness of middle Earth.
@@kyleenglot9184 Totally. Finishing filming all three films before the release of even The Fellowship turned out to be a massively successful idea.

I love that, ever since he nearly touched the ring at 0:19, Gandalf's mind has clearly been racing, like he's going, "No, this can't possibly be _the_ One Ring that has been missing for 2,500 years. Surely, it has to be impossible. It has to be." And then he spent the time traveling to Minas Tirith fearing that is was the One Ring, only for his worst fears to mount when he read the account of Isildur. And it would all come to a head when Frodo reveals that the Ring has the markings only fire could reveal.
RIGHT? Like this has to be over the course of a few weeks.

“Riddles in the dark..”
What a great line for Gandalf to say here. The chapter where Bilbo gets the Ring in The Hobbit is called Riddles in the Dark. Peter, Fran and Phillipa did a magnificent job adapting the books to the screen.
TOM RIDDLES in the dark. Tom-Tom: TWO OF THEM
This is one of my favourite parts of the movie. The eeriness that comes over Gandalf as he trances out over the ring ...the darkness and heavy seriousness beginning to seep in...
Or maybe his love of the halflings' leaf has just slowed his mind. ;)
Yes indeed...
Absolutely. He’s seems to be in denial that this can’t possibly be the ONE ring made by Sauron. Gandalf is thinking and realizing that things ahead aren’t going to be like they use to be and everything is about to change for Middle Earth.
2:58 that shot of Mordor is so cool! Any shot of Mordor from a distance with the dark mountains, lava shooting up, dark clouds, and the lightning is so cool!
23:17.
0:19 i like to think this is what woke the ring up.
The touch of another Maiar.
As oppose to the multiple times Bilbo's used the ring in the past, never before attracting the attention of the Nine.
Why didn’t the ring wraiths feel when bilbo put the ring on then?
@@punkrockdavid The ring didn't seem to be awake. Sauron also didn't seem to be fully awake till the Nine reached the Shire.
Gandalf never touched the ring. Also, if you've read the novels, remember that seventeen years passed between Bilbo's departure and Frodo's.
There is more going on here besides the poor abbreviation of a story as it's translated from page to screen.
@@doeverything7997 yeah that is one thing the movies didn't do a good job at adapting, it took Gandalf (with the help of Aragorn, he tracked down Gollum) 17 years to investigate the true nature of the ring whereas here it makes it seem like it was a month or two at most
Interesting
The zoom on Gandalf's face at 1:14 is among my favourite camera movements in all of cinema. He is already working out what that Ring is and the significance of Frodo picking it up without any trouble. All of that without a single line or change in expression.
I think without gandalf realizing yet he’d discovered Frodo and the rings fate being intertwined at that moment. That full on clarity came a little later.
Gandalf discovering that Hobbits being simple unambitious folk, tend to be rather resilient to the ring’s allure.
His realization that hobbits are damn near immune to the corrupting influence of the ring.
Why?
Because they simply don't see the point in doing anything other than living a comfortable, happy life.
@@MrJustonemorevoice no...hobbits are immune because they were the only ones who didn’t get a ring so it takes a long time for the evil to corrupt them...
I agree with someone else here. He had always known what the ring was, which is why he was comfortable at the time with bilbo holding on to it. I believe the issue was that there were no signals anywhere from any of the other races that the search was on. It was only when he saw the vision of Sauron's eye and then saw Bilbo transitioning that he realised the fate of Frodo and the ring. This seems more in keeping with the reality of the ring, which is that it is almost like a radar and an absorbent material. If evil sends out a signal to it, it will be like a locator beacon and amplify it's abilities, but that also has an extraordinary impact on the ring bearer.

That freaking eye of sauron jumpscare always gets me. I remember watching this on the cinema and it scared the shit out of me , mainly because of the atmosphere of the scene.
I wish I had seen it at the premiere day in the cinema.
This whole scene is so elegantly done
In the book, Gandalf held the Ring in his hand twice. He asked Frodo for the Ring and looked at it. Then he tossed it into the fireplace and let it sit in the fire for a while. Then he removed it with the tongs, held it again, saw the writing inside and outside of the Ring for himself and gave it back to Frodo.
In the movie, if Gandalf touches the Ring, Sauron feels and sees it instantly. Even faster than a palantir.
Interesting.
Yea i definitely prefer the movie where he refuses to touch it because it would corrupt him
The movie condenses and distills a lot of ideas in the book
Why can sauron see if if gandalf touches it? Does being a wizard have something to do with it
@@JasonVoorhees10100 nah
Well, the Ring _is_ Sauron, in a way. It holds a part of his essence, even if it does have a mind of its own.
It's so weird how we see Gondor in both the first and the second movie, and somehow it's subtle and we don't really register it. But when Gandalf and Pippin arrive to Gondor in the third movie, we see it in it's full glory.

4:24 I never noticed the dog knocking the wood out of the axeman’s hand as he goes to pick it up
man, in 4:54 there was so much plot development that in modern movies today you wouldn't get in half an hour, or it would be rushed through cheap exposition
here we get to see Gandalf being afraid, Frodo being confused, Minas Tirith, Mordor, Isildur in the past, the history of the Ring and the threat of the 9 in such a short span, yet none of it feels rushed.
MASTERFUL script and cinematography, too bad the Hobbit fell short in the latter 2 movies, especially the 3rd.

Yeah that would of probably helped but can't the Nazgul sense the ring though so they would know it isn't there but at the Shire? Hence the name Ringwraiths or could they only sense it once frodo placed it on?
It would have helped Frodo and company, but the ring wraith would have eventually figured the rouse and went back, kill everyone in that house, set everything in fire, and then piss in their ashes. That hobbit could have left the house for a while, but he still would have returned to a scorched land and had lost everything he didn't carried, with the knowledge that the wrait could return at any moment. For what it seems like just a shady dude going after someone else, doesn't seem to be worth the risk.

Just imagine this: according to the book, Gandalf was gone for at least 10 years. For the first 3 he would occasionally visit Frodo at night but after that, he was gone. Imagine a fear so great, so dark that even made one of the most powerful beings in the Middle Earth, a Maiar quiver. For 10 years he hoped that the magical ring that a small creature from the Shire had in his pocket was not the One Ring, only for the bitter truth to come.
Ian Mckellen really nailed that look of "Oh s**t!" after reading the Account of Isildur.
He finally remembers his password!! He came back to us!!!

My favorite scene if forced to choose. I don't know why, perhaps its pure and chilling cinematic effect. The cut from Baradur to Minas Tirith , perfection.
It took Gandalf 17 years to figure it out. 17 years from the time he left to the time he returns.
in the books. in the movies, it's mere weeks or months. movies speed things up alot. everything is done with more haste. In the books Gandalf also spends weeks with Frodo, helping him plan his trip. Then Frodo orchestrates his whole move away to the country diversion so he can slip away.
Movie is more like the Nazgul are breathing down his door and Gandalf beats them to the shire by like a day
@@stevesmith1383 well we wouldn't want to see that one long moment as 17 years or so in the film

This scene is one reason why I think Fellowship was the best movie.
I always forget we actually saw Minas Tirith in Fellowship. I kinda feel it needed a grander introduction.
Also there is no way for the audience to tell that Gandalf traveled a VERY long way from The Shire to get there
Peter Jackson actually filmed all 3 films simultaneously so that he could ensure authentic continuity of the vast setting that is Middle Earth.
They probably kept it obscured in darkness so that we could get the grand reveal of it in ROTK. It was actually supposed to be visible in The Two Towers as well, during the scene where Faramir is leading Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath, but they removed it when test audiences mistook it for Helm's Deep. They put it back though, in the Extended Edition and in the recent 4K re-release.
Indeed
If memory serves it takes at least a few months to get from the borders of The Shire to Minas Tilith

It is surprising that the Nazgul did not kill that hobbit. Nazgul are not purely evil after all.
That hobbit helped him so what's the point. It's more a wonder why they didn't kill the people who told them nothing like Farmer Maggot.
Probably not trying to draw attention to themselves, hence why they were "disguised as riders, dressed in black". Sauron's goal was to get the Ring back as soon and as quickly as possible, and information getting out about the location of the Ring would probably spur the races of Middle Earth into action, making it that much harder for Sauron to recover it.
"Oh, uh, hey Frodo! Just so you know, there's some sort of unspeakable evil in the entry way. Personally I refuse to touch it and I'd adamantly suggest you do likewise. If it's even half as bad as it could be I might need your help disposing of it, but it would be unconscionable for me to permit you to so much as handle it without full disclosure and acceptance of the implication to your mortal soul."

Imagine how the ring feels, being picked up by a hobbit 3 times in a row
There should be some tv show or something that accounts the stories of Gandalf’s journeys
As I grew up. This part felled very creepy and you get the sense of dread.
In the book, his fear of whether or not it is the one ring is even worse. He literally stops seeing Frodo altogether from this moment onwards, only peeping his head in every year around Frodo’s birthday to check up on him, without actually greeting him. He does all the way until Frodo is 41, and then doesn’t see him til Frodo turns 50. He spends all that time doing research on whether or not it’s the one ring, searching for answers, and even tracking down Gollum with help from Aragorn to learn how he obtained the ring.
I eonder how many people flinched when the "eye of sauron" jumpscare appeared
Gandalf traveled all that way from the shire to minas tirith to read a paper
'PaperS'
the movie fails to state that this little quest of Gandalf's takes 10 fucking years.
In the book wasnt it like 17 years. Which of course would be a ridiculous amount of time even given horse back was the fastest means of transportation, and even if Gandalf scoured the countryside for Gollums demented arse. Maybe have it be more like several months as in maybe 17-18 months rather than years.
17 years
I never understood though why it was so difficult to Gandalf to put together that Bilbo’s ring was in fact the One Ring of Sauron, why did he took so long to find out for sure? In the film it is conveyed that it took a few months, but in the book it’s 17 years between the day he leaves to find answers and the day he returns to tell Frodo that his ring was Sauron’s ring and all its story. In my opinion he should’ve gone right away with Frodo to Rivendell to gather with Elrond.
Saruman told everyone the One Ring was lost into the sea and since he was the loremaster no one questioned him. Gandalf wasn't sure what Bilbo's ring was other than it was magic, so he had to do a lot of searching to find out what it was. I believe Tolkien even admits this is a minor plothole that Gandalf doesn't just go straight to Saruman to ask him about it.
This was by far the best game i ever played in my 31 years of life

That little maneuver cost us 17 years.

The Nazgul asking for directions will never not be funny.
All that parchment is a fire hazard. How did they pass health and safety?
One thing the movie does poorly is show the passage of time.
For instance, Gandalf was gone for twenty years after giving Frodo the ring.
Its not a problem or anything but it is fascinating.
I don't think it's even supposed to be twenty years in the movies. Probably a couple of months or so. You see the Nazgul riding out of Minas Morgul before Gandalf gets to Minas Tirith. I assume the Nazguls departure for the shire must have happened just before or even during Gandalfs arrival in Minas Tirith.
Yeah yeah.
