We'd best to start with the lecture then. He begins with a claim to evidence and commences from a place of inference instead. (often rooted in misinterpretation to boot). To use the modern parlance, this "PhD" is goofy to the max - ahistorical twaddle.

The word Stuart comes from the old nordish root Svart which means black. Stuart is the same word as Swarthy, which means black in old English. There was once a Stuart line of Kings in England. The name of the founding ancestor was Stuart which means Black man.

The idea that there were a tiny few black people in medieval England can not be extrapolated out to mean " Africans are integral to English history" and so what anyway, all people have history. If only Hegel had known that, he would never had said that Africans were a people without history. The lecturer never said Africans are integral to English history. He said that people of African descent were an everyday part of that history. You might want to ask what emotions lead you to misunderstand or overstate what the lecturer said.

So, the point of this is: an extremely small minority of sub-Saharan people existed in Europe. Their largest presence was being 10% (possibly) of one city in the region of Europe the Moors (a mixed population btw) conquered, and their impact on the rest of Europe was so minor we don't register they were there.

    • @ejadadi
      @ejadadi Год назад +1

You don't register that they were here because Europe, like most of its citizenry, wants to forget that there were people of African decent in many parts of Europe. Do yourself a favour and read a book. The History of the Scottish Islands published in the 1700's mentions "native" people living on some of the islands with dark/black skin. Read about the moors and all the things they brought to Spain/Portugal and the rest of Europe. There are many Spanish words that have Arabic origins. Stop being lazy and ignorant.

@@ejadadi yes Arabic origins because the Moors were mostly of Arab/Levant stock. What book about black people in Scotland? You'll have to link that than some vague book from hundreds of years ago. The part of Europe I'm from you will literally never see a person of colour unless you go to a tourist spot. The reality is poc were there (Moors, Huns, Mongols) but played an extremely minor to non-existent role, apart from being invading enemies for the people of Europe.
Also, we dont want to forget anything. I think you're desperately trying to overplay their relevance. Even today in England, a very diverse European country. There is a 7% Asian and 3% black population. And that's from the British commonwealth, not some "medieval black and Asian European group".
In Germany it's less, unless you count Turks. And across the continent even less than that.

Don't know if other Europeans are considered a diversity element, they seem to be lumped all into one group. At least in north america.
France has a small but notable north African segment, and a small but notable mixed segment.
And yes of course any major city will have the most foreign elements.

@@ejadadi the Moors were Arab caliphates that conquered mesopotamia Syria then Egypt and the Maghreb
They ruled different parts of Iberia at different times and never all at once and the last.two centuries only held Grenada.
They had a minor influence on Europe as a whole.
They didn't get past the northern kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and Leon and Asturias
And only one caliphate was Berber ruled and lasted the least amount of time. The Berbers were integrated into the Umayyad caliphate after they were conquered and before that they were under the rule of the Visigoths and the Romans before then.
The Berbers tried to revolt In the Maghreb after the Iberian invasion and an army was sent from Baghdad to quell the revolt before it spread to Iberia
The Moors is Arab history and Arab rule every caliphate ruler was an Arab the main power base was Damascus the capital was Baghdad
They didn't conquer europe they conquered the Iberian peninsula of southern Europe
The holy Roman empire ruled Europe at that time and it was the Franks who stopped the Muslim expansion from attempting to invade europe ever again
What ever their achievements were they belong to Arabs not north Africans who were simply swept up in the Muslim campaign.
It was actually Greek and Roman Culture that had a bigger influence on Arabs than they did on Europeans
The Arabs had all the Greek and Roman literature translated and in some cases expanded on the mathematical scientific and philosophical works of the Greeks and Romans
The infrastructure and irrigation systems they found in Iberia were the Romans and they kept them and improved them where they could.
Arabic words in Spanish are words of things Arabs introduced they are loan words
They didn't alter the language in any significant way
When invaders leave significant influence you end up with places like south America and north America and Africa were Spanish English and Portuguese and french became official languages
      Where names replaced indigenous names.
Arabs had that impact on Africa not Europe
Same as Europe did on africa and the Americas
The original comment is correct that the Arab invasion of Iberia wasn't hardly noticed because Europe was far busier with other things like the various civil wars in the holy Roman empire and the eastern Roman empire and the battle for Britain and the holy crusades.

He was named that in the 16th century there is no written record of the black prince before then.
He was called Edward of Woodstock
And he gained the nickname the black prince because historians noted written accounts of how he swapped his royal shield during jousting for the shield he war in battle the same shield that sits above his tomb alongside his black battle helm.
His son was king Richard the second
Why wasn't he the black king
Considering his father was the black prince who never made king.
Now if you want to believe that when a nickname of colour is given it must simply mean skin colour and as you won't know this Edward of Woodstock had a brother called John of gaunt who's nickname among some historians is the red prince. Then it's Funny how he was the third son of Edward the third and the same mother and father as Edward of Woodstock which means if the black prince was a black man then they all were but for some reason it was only Edward that was singled out.

You ignore all the broader evidence to the point that when examples of portraits and artwork are given you've all taken the stance that an unparalleled conspiracy took place to whitewash the thousands and thousands of images paintings illustrations mosaics statues and tapestries.

Berbers often have blue eyes. The Carthaginians trace their roots to the Levant. Egyptians and other North Africans consider themselves part of the Arab world.
I have no doubt that their were small populations of people from the continent of Africa present in Medeival England. I also can believe a segment of that population was West or Sub Saharran in origin but it's impact can be charitably called minimal to the larger English society.

The overwhelming majority of English people had never personally met a person who lived more than 20 miles away from where they were born, so what. It seems that for English people who lived in larger urban settings, black people may have been part of their lives. The Lecturer never claimed that people of African descent played a major role in English society, he suggested that they have been part of the fabric of that society, and may not have been seen in the same racialized way that they are today. I congratulate you if when you hear the phrase people of African descent, you think of people with blue eyes. I am pretty that when he says people of African descent, most people think of someone with black skin and dark eyes.

Most of England’s Royal family didn’t originate in England, but rather Germany. And as much as most might dislike it, so called black people were at the inception of European monarchs and royal families. A great book that puts true history in perspective is Memoirs of the secret services of John Macky. John Macky in his own writing describes the the people of the very era being spoken about in this lecture.

By the way, moors were berebers, not blacks, only a fraction of them were really blacks (almoravids), and only the mauritanian and Mali part of the soldiers. The black inside the moors raiding the mediterranean were mostly muslims mercenaries from sub saharan origin (from Sudan all the way to Nigeria ato senegal) or muslim slaves also from sub saharan origin.
In Art obviously the ones that had more impression for the European mind were the foreigners, East Indians, west Indians, Blacks, etc... and obviously it´s more striking to do a battle were all the soldiers were sudanese instead of the standard bererer or semitic soldier from the fatimid Caliphate in a picture depicting medieval fight with fatimids
