I absolutely understand, Charlotte - Christmas in the northern hemisphere will be as disappointing to me as one is to you down here - it's all about memories. To me, Christmas is getting the family visits over with and ending the day at the beach just lying on the sand, dozing (best ever was the one we made a picnic and spent the whole day at the beach because we had no family ties that year! 😂). You miss tradition ❤

It was Durban or Cape Town Mick Fanning went toe to toe with the pointer. Most attacks here are in WA and SA and a few on the NSW north coast. I also live with the dreaded Sydney funnel web spiders as neighbours and in over 50 years I've never seen one. The one that bit me I never saw either, didn't know what it was that hammered my foot until a venom swab test was done. I'm still alive so they're no worries, unless you get bit of course. No probs though if you can get to a hospital, bit of a prob if you can't but. Get it seen to and the only thing that might kill you is the extreme pain you have to put up with for the next day or so. Can't have analgesics incase they react with the antivenom so you just have to clench your fists, roll around on your back in agony biting on a thick piece of rubber. You'll be fine after that, trust me.
Never trust a person who says trust me the bloke down the road used to say until he trusted someone who said trust me. He was never seen again for some reason, dunno what happened to him.

Thanks dude. Are you from Wollongong by any chance? Our friend heavily recommended us to go and visit there. Might make a trip down in Summer 😉 by the way, thanks for all the local wisdom on the animals here. Good to know that generally you will be ok if you are ever bitten. Will just make sure we are never without a way to get to a hospital if we need to!

    • @FromTheGong

@@cjexplores Northern suburbs of Wollongong. Wollongong used to be a grey smoggy heavy industrial steel making and coal mining town covered in black dust with a not so nice reputation just over 20 years ago.
We still have the steelworks and heavy industries concentrated around Port Kembla but now the steelworks are a world leader in 'clean' steel production. Most of the coal mines have closed down also which eliminated the black dust and on a whole it's transitioned from heavy industries to clean energy production and advanced technology research and production. It's actually now regarded as one of the cleanest cities in Australia with high focus now on environmental conservation. Lake Illawarra was the most polluted stagnant coastal waterways with a stench so putrid those living near it depending on wind direction couldn't leave windows or doors open. It's also now become one of the cleanest waterways on the east coast with clear water and an abundance of marine life. Seals are now being seen in the lake for the first time since the early 1900's and being closed to commercial netting has restored the natural balance of species and allowed previously destroyed nurseries to thrive. It's actually acceded expectations which just proves it's never too late to fix or restore what we stuffed up through ignorance and greed. Thankfully the escarpment face has always been protected from development and housing so the entire mountains and escarpment are basically untouched semi tropical rainforest and eucalypt forests with walking and mountain bike tracks all through. (untouched except for early logging in the early 1800's and unavoidable invasive weeds and feral deer running amok in the mountains and even in the suburbs). Actually a previously unknown koala colony was recently discovered accidentally behind Mt Keira by thermal drone. They were conducting a study into the feral deer population deeper in the bush which because of the thickness thermal imaging was the only way to see them. It's also a blessing that we were one of the few environments that escaped the fires a few years ago and has been unburnt since 1968.
Then there's the beaches, a 60km line of clean long and short sandy beaches from Stanwell Park down to Kiama and beyond. Probably would have been easier and quicker just to say we have the best of everything hidden down here.
