Delighted by the lack of snobbery in this vlog. Nothing wrong at all with a Greggs sausage roll (and their egg custards are pretty wonderful too). Even in Edinburgh, i ain't paying a fiver for a sausage roll!
Max's Bakes also has a stand at the Saturday Farmer's market in the shadow of the castle for people looking for a morning sausage roll while shopping locally and getting good photos!
Great video as usual 😊 the humble (and not so humble) sausage roll is a staple over here too. We did eat a few Gregg’s vegan rolls when we were in the UK and I love that most places have good veg options ❤ nom nom nom
Yay! Max's! We get ours from their stall at the farmers market. Sadly Frogmother doesn't like the pork and fennel but we both like the venison and red wine :)
Last time I had a sausage roll was from my semi-commercially run high school canteen (some decades ago) in Melbourne and never since. Your video does not make me want to try it again but the positive comments on Greggs pastry took me by surprise. I've always presumptuously dismissed Greggs as the dreggs without trying it, but this video makes me think I might give them a try should the opportunity arise
are there any more meat dense cheap eats? i remember you recommended oink and i will be trying them when i visit later in april! nvm, i think there are some good options from your video
I wanna try those so baaad! Say, is Edinburgh a dog-friendly city? Dog parks? Dogs allowed in transportation? Leniency to have a dog in a restaurant (if officially forbidden, I don't know UK legislation on this) or shops, etc? It's in my bucket list to visit Edinburgh at some point, but I depend on my 30+kg dog who isn't an official service dog. It'd be helpful to know beforehand just how much we could struggle or thrive.
From what I've gathered from my friends, Edinburgh is less dog friendly than some larger English cities, but I also don't believe it's unfriendly to dog owners. There is a dog friendly scheme called "Dugs Welcome" (yes, with the Scottish spelling!) and I also notice many cafes and pubs being dog friendly beyond this list. I'd recommend making it a warm month visit just so you can take advantage of outside seating, that should very rarely be problematic with a dog! .) Hope this helps!
Have I Got News For You, mentioned that people in the UK dip their sausage rolls in their tea. Can you confirm if this is a regular practice in Edinburgh? If it is, why? This was a very good video.😊
Sounds borderline insane to me! I've seen people dip crisps in pints but cannot confirm sausage rolls in tea are a thing that visibly happens around me as I go about my life in Edinburgh 😅 maybe someone in this comment section will prove me wrong!
Query: With the pasty thing- Did anywhere offer a Bridie, or is that not an Edinburgh thing? I always preferred them to pasties, the pastry I think, but as I turned veggie decades ago haven't noticed them about & wondered have pasties taken over? Sorry, just ruminating.😁
Good question! Seems like some traditional butcher shops still make them alongside pies and such - gonna have to do some more in person research in the near future! .)
GF sausage rolls are like hen's teeth, but otherwise almost all restaurants will have plenty of options for you. Can recommend the GF fish and chips at City Restaurant (chippy on Nicolson St).
Despte being baked, Greggs sausage rolls feel like they've been deep-fried. IMO they are by far the worst sausage roll you can get in the UK - I have one at least every year to remind myself why I dislike them so much.
Your definition of "Edinburgh" is extremely narrow, especially given your videos on tourist traps. Venture out of EH3 and you'll experience some amazing bakeries

Went to Max's bake because of this video and can confirm it's lovely :D
Successful influencing !!!
And God rested on the 7th day....with a sausage roll.
A task that needed doing, bless you guys for stepping up to the plate! Excellent video.
This video makes me want to go back to the UK and have a sausage roll, even though I just came back yesterday and had my last one a few days ago.
I hope the Visit Scotland tourism board reads this and appreciates the work that goes into me forcing people to revisit over and over again haha
Thankful for this one. We will be visiting in September and needed this amazing sausage roll info.
You are a traveller with taste!
Oh god! I’m salivating 🤤
Yay! All my places, except the Leith place. Gregg’s and Mor are very good and convenient and Max was new and welcome information. Thanks
Is Harkness pies the same business as Superoni?? Google maps seem to indicate that.
South Queensferry- The little Bakery 10/10 Sausage Rolls
Been meaning to pop over to SQ for a little adventure - thanks for the tip!
This is the cronchiest & monchiest video ever!!! I need a sausage roll feast right now.🤤🤤🤤
CRONCHIEST AND MONCHIEST! Now that is a phrase with a huge potential to enter my vocabulary forever!

Greggs is my "litmus test" for sausage rolls - but the one from the butchers place seemed like something that I wouldnt mind trying :)
Yay! Max's! We get ours from their stall at the farmers market. Sadly Frogmother doesn't like the pork and fennel but we both like the venison and red wine :)
I seriously need to explore more flavours from Max’s, but whenever I see the pork and fennel
one I can’t make myself try anything else 🥲
Fun and great video, as always! Loved Superoni when we visited!
If I am ever in Edinburgh, I will try a sausage roll because you recommend it.
Crombies and John Bains are my favourites
I spend 5 weeks in Scotland I never taste sausage roll :( I'm sorry ;0) Next time, I will for sure! I love to have both your opinion ! More Simon !!!
Pie maker on the bridges was one of my student favorts.
I really need to try their tattie dog soon 😅
There's a Mor at Waverley Mall too
Aaaaah thanks for the info! Haven’t noticed them there yet!
Fab video!!! Max's bakes is a winner, but also, Twelve Triangles in Morningside, their sausage rolls are INSAHN!!

“Sometimes sausage can just be beans” as a vegan, I support this message.

Really enjoying your videos…we are visiting Edinburgh for the first time in September…what about chip butties? Or is that more of an English thing?
It's a thing - most chip shops will offer one, but it's usually on a buttered roll.
@@alisonrodger3360 roll, as opposed to sliced bread?
Where’d you get your brown jacket that you’re wearing in the outro?
Preacher's Patisserie on Lady Lawson Street does fab sausage rolls.
Putting it on my list! .)
Please do the best Cinnamon Roll in Edinburgh!
Love me a scotch pie
Max's Bakes Pork & Fennel are the best! And I don't even like sausage rolls normally.
Maybe it's just me, being from Glasgow, but I can imagine only tourists paying 5 pounds for a sausage roll in Edinburgh 😉, wasn't even a jumbo😂
I wanna try those so baaad!

Most cafes around the Meadows/Bruntsfield/Morningside and in Stockbridee are dog friendly! Centre of town not so much.

Never heard of that.
You would ruin the sausage roll and you would ruin the tea. The act of a lunatic.
Er what?!
Never! Must have been a joke

I prefer a steak bake
Is gluten free difficult to find? I’m traveling there in October.

Marks and Spencer’s sell gf sausage rolls and cheese and onion rolls for you to heat at home. They are sold in packs of two.
Not a fan of Gregg's sausage roll. Love the Pie Maker, on South Bridge
Sausage rolls!!!
Greggs sausage rolls aka a Wigan dummy (pacifier for Americans), please insert your localised prejudice
❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊

Greggs sausage rolls barely qualify as food in my opinion . Revolting

I’m sure that once you watch the whole catalogue of videos your itch will be scratched 💫
Another great video :) thank you
Thank you so much Craig! ✨
