So today in my class my teacher humiliated me in front of everyone because I didn't understand this topic even though I've been paying attention and taking notes. This video has helped me so much you don't even understand. I was told Id probably fail since I didn't know a question, and now with having this method Ill hopefully prove them wrong. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this. I always taught my students this little trick: to quickly find the name of a key in flats (besides F Major) always check the next to the last flat. That will tell you the key. For # keys always move half step up from the last sharp.
Also useful! I do cover those tricks in my updated key signatures video, though I do find the extra rules and complications a bit cumbersome. Students tend to mix and match the rules. (ie. Up a semitone from the second last flat?)
"Kinda like the way you probably memorized all the street names in your neighborhood, but you probably never studied them" :D Dude, awesome teaching, keep going.
I'm 60 + and still keen to learn music in the keyboard and the sharps and flats were really complicated for me and I'm delighted with the way you share your experience. Thank you.
After 16 years of playing music and taking lessons and learning on my own, I find today that you helped me really understand this. I've been studying your videos for a couple of days and for the first time in my life I kinda start to understand music and think about what might be the key of a song I'm learning based on the first chord... Things I've seen my teachers do but never fully understand... What can I say, except for THANK YOU!!!
I took violin for 5 years and never understood key signatures or how to find them. 20 seconds of this video and I already understood more than I ever did before, it finally clicked for me!
This has really helped me! I played piano for churches for many years, but I never took the time to learn these basic facts. It's amazing how you took a difficult subject and simplified it so I can understand. Than you!
I had been trying to remember this rules for the last 2 years... Now I'm done in 6 minutes! Thank you a lot! You are a great communicator and clear teacher!
Omg this made it so much easier! I've been procrastinating to learn since I felt that it was really cumbersome to remember... Didn't think this could be summarised so well within a 6 minutes video!
I had to learn everything off by heart as a kid, so I never had the beauty of using tricks and things to help. As a violinist, I have always dreaded having to figure out if the note is flat, sharp or natural especially when it is a note in 3rd position and over, so this video is fairly helpful whenever I get a new piece to practice. Thank you, on behalf of violinists :)
Thank u so much. After not really listening to an explanation of these things from a great teacher and having to pay the consequences nine years later, these videos have really helped. Keep ‘em coming.
I play most heavy metal on electric guitar and I understood intervals, chords, and modes of the major scale. But I still didn’t understand key signature. Lol. This is helpful. Thanks.
Oh my gosh. This just blew my ever-loving mind. Thank you so much. And thank you for explaining it with such a nice voice and no extra stuff or droning on like a lot of videos. Just the facts and easy illustrations. Great!
Wow! That actually helped a lot I just got a bad grade on my music pace and had to restart it because i had no idea how to do this stuff and this really helped thanks.
I’ve been playing the cello for 8 years now, but relied strongly on the physical side of playing so my theory has never been great. I’m aiming to take grade 8 at some point but haven’t done any exams since grade 4. To take grade 8 I need to pass grade 5 theory so am revising for that. This made life so much easier! You explained it super clearly and I understood right away! Many thanks :)
I did years of sight reading competitions in school, and take my children to an old-fashioned shape note singing school every year, and have never understood how to figure key signatures.... i've always waited for someone else to say what key we were in, and then I could read the music... teaching my children music theory now, and I want to fully understand. This was a great, easy to understand, and straight to the point video. Thanks so much!
i literally almost started crying when the notes i was playing didnt sound right there was damn near no information online on how to read the notes correctly you legitimately have no idea how grateful i am because as far as i know, nobody taught me what you did in just the first 30 seconds
I know this is yonks old by now, but my music teacher who has a good sense of humour, came up with Father Christmas Gave Dad An Electric Blanket, and Blanket Explodes And Dad Gets Crispy Feet. (She said it was originally cold feet, but she said if a blanket exploded at your feet they wouldn't just be cold.) Also thank you so much, this was by far the best way to remember Key Signatures by far!
I have been looking for this for 2 years, I start music an media classes in Jan. this is first time these signitures have been giving that I am confident I can learn this. Thanks that is just the way of putting them in an order that my mind can grasp. Awesome lesson!
After suffering through all those wanna be fun vids on this topic, it is incredibly refreshing to see something so simple, well compiled, explained and presented. Very well done.
Thank you!!! I needed this info for a uni audition! I can read sheet music, and I did GCSE music... but I don't understand theory at all Edit: F# major, is my favourite key signature and has been for about 6 years, I love it so much!
Ok...This blew me away! I always thought it was some mystery formula made in china in the Ming dynasty! Put this way really opened my eyes. Thank you VERY much for this simple class!
Yep! Simple patterns. It looks super complicated at first, but once you get into the details, it’s not so crazy. And the lore you understand the structure of scales the circle of fifths, the easier and more obvious it gets. All the best!
I've loved all these theory videos and shared them widely! My wish list would include "Everything you need to know about Minor Scale Triads so you don't fail music school in seven minutes".
Hey somebody else uses a fat cats mnemonic, years ago I learned FCGDAEB by making up: FCGDAEB "Fat cats get dough and eat bread" BEADGCF"bead gets cats fat" Admittedly the flats mnemonic doesn't make much sense, but meh it worked for me.
60 minutes compressed into 6mins effectively... Mind blowing! One has to surf a lot over internet to gather this information, is on one side and watching your 5-10mins videos on another side...
As someone entirely self-taught with music theory, your video clarified my understanding with key signatures. Big thanks! I'll also share a link to your video to explain key signatures for someone else; your video does it a lot better than I can.
I'm a first time cultural and creative arts teacher. I saw this on my scheme of work (course outline), and I didnt know how best to teach my students. Thank you for this lesson. Super super helpful. 💞💞
Great video! I did learn to play the violin when I was a kid, but now I can't remember anything and this video is good to start with. Tho I think I'll rewatch it a few more times to make sure it stays in my head. And I'm getting subscribed!
Welcome back! Yeah, this stuff takes a while to really sink in. The more you live with it and actually work it out on your instrument, the faster things will settle down. Good luck!
Worth watching, i was so anxious to know the whole thing that you just taught us and it has been a long time since i was trying to learn but now iam breathing free phew!! 🤩 Thank you God bless you brother 🙏
I always liked the key signature of E flat major and A flat major. i prefer flats over sharps because I think it's easier to remember. I don't like signatures with too many sharps or flats or. not enough because it doesn't fit my fingers well
thank you so much ive been in orchestra for 4 years and was taught how to play but never things like naturals, sharps, flats, positions and other things like this, they just seemed to understand unlike me, thank you!
You are a godsend. Music theory exam tomorrow! It’s all key signatures. Now I’m hoping you have a video on all the relative and parallel minor key signatures
This lesson is very helpful!and also the hack that u made to have the flat minors in order were very correct and very helpful since our exam is tomorrow.
I took music course for 2 years now and believe me I don't really plan on studying further. Its just an optional subject in my school and in this 2 years, I've passed the exams only once. Where were you when I was 6 when I ended up playing by ear instead because this was so confusing, now after 40 years and 100 songs played, learn how to get rid of my fear of music sheets thanks to you!

@@BradHarrison Update, I got a 97% on the quiz!!! :)
Hey! That’s great! Congratulations!
Ps I appreciate the update!
@CoryxKenshin ReUpload Humiliating doesn't help at all. It makes you not want to learn or ask questions.
My favourite is:
“Fame Can Get Dull, And Even Boring...

Nice! I like it!
haha this made me giggle
It makes sense and easy to remember! Thanks bro/sis!

Yes this strategy is what I learned as a kid and it stuck.
That's how I was taught, too.
yes this was also the trick my piano teacher taught me 20 years ago.
Same was I was taught as well.
"Kinda like the way you probably memorized all the street names in your neighborhood, but you probably never studied them" :D Dude, awesome teaching, keep going.
Thanks so much!
you may have just saved my life with this..This was one thing I was having such trouble with
Great! Good luck!
Same😜
The first 30 seconds literally just changed my entire theory of making music. Thank you for a clear explanation with visuals and sound.
Same haha 😂
I'm 60 + and still keen to learn music in the keyboard and the sharps and flats were really complicated for me and I'm delighted with the way you share your experience. Thank you.
I was taught "Father Christmas Gave Dad An Electric Blanket", "Blanket Exploded And Dad Got Cold Feet".
Oh same 🙂😌
👍👍"Blanket exploded and dad got CHARRED feet" is more accurate🙂
Hahaha that's good.
This is awesome man.

I remember when mr. Harrison showed us this video in class. at 3:40 everyone was laughing, great video and great teacher!

this guy expained what my school can't do in 6 years in 6 minutes

I’ve learned it like this: “Fat Cats Get Dizzy After Eating Birds” and “Big Elephants At Dinner Gobble Curly Fries”
Love it!
This works backwards too Birds Eating After Dizzy Get Cats Fat.
Love it and learned a great method! But dude, slow down for us newbies haha
@Bianca Gabela oh how do you do that??
@@EmilyJeanVoice yeah and then it gets laggy

i have an exam in like 5 hrs on key signatures n this rlly came in clutch LMAO
Well done! This has really helped with teaching music theory during online learning.
I’m just starting out as a self taught, and this is clear as it can ever get. thank you so much! I can finally ready sheets other than C Major

this video was so helpful! Im almost 15 and started piano last year on my birthday because of corona my teacher can't teach me so this is helpful
U JUST SAVED MY LIFE WITH THIS I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE SIGNATURES ONLY COUNT FOR THAT ONE SPECIFIC LINE, NOT ALL THE NOTES THANK YOUUU
Thanks a lot man
Today is my exam and i didnt know anything about key signatures on the scales
i finally have understood
Thanks a lot
This video is better than my years of experience of following teacher Holy Moly ! Thank you so much !
Thanks for this man. And R.I.P father Charles
Suppose the flats were first, and the sharps were second? Like Charles became Father Charles because he lost his father, then ended the second battle?
That table at around 1.10. Superb. Such an effective reference.

I was going 'round in circles' trying to understand this concept, but this video demonstrates it so clearly. Thanks!
Haha "round in circles"? Would those be circles of fifths or circles of fourths?
Finally a video which actually makes sense and is simple
Great! Glad to hear it worked for you!
Super helpful video! I have a test tomorrow on this and I went from knowing nothing to really having a good grasp on this concept. Thanks!
