    西拉雅以至大武壟、馬卡道,傳統社會中也擁有男女平等的社會觀,以前男性是被招婚,三年試用期後成為有用的男性,成為女方(長女)家屋裡的一員。但是呢?男人沒有說婚出,就潑出去的水,而是跟殺豬禮的邏輯一樣,豬肉是女方和女方舅舅的、豬骨和頭尾是男方的,舅舅以前也是進到老婆家當有用的男人,但他仍是自己家族裡重要的一員。所以是家族間的結盟,而非切割。到後來是因為日本殖民時期,日本人非常父系,因此部落才出現妥協,男人繳錢就能脫離岳父岳母的家,可以獨立,從此之後部落也就開始有家暴和大男人了。平埔族群的習俗沒有消失,只是400年來越過越辛苦,徬徨與迷茫每換一次政權就會發生。至於飲食,富里的西拉雅系綜合體也仍有tiakava 臺灣胡椒、cikura 箭筍、sausuayang 某種藥用植物、naunau 葛鬱金、pacila 藥用樹種、paciru 麵包果、varig 孟宗竹⋯⋯可食用植物的應用,這幾年富里地區很努力做文化復振,才慢慢找到自己原本身份的認同,脫離了必須誠服於閩南沙文主義的陰影,飲食與山林資源的應用是南島民族重要的資本。

      THE ISLAND OF FORMOSA
      (Extracts from Valentyn's account, published in 1726)
      That the island Tayouan or Formosa has a very close connection with our trade with Japan is sufficiently clear to render it necessary that we should give some account of this portion of territory.
      This great island is called by the natives themselves Pak-an or Pak-ande;
      ......
      The country is very populous, and the men especially are of lofty stature, and strong of body and limb.
      In the district of Tiverang, which lies among the hills immediately behind the town and fort of Zeelandia,
      there is a race of particularly barbarous and uncommonly tall people, a sort of half giants,
      of a colour between brown and yellow, but inclining towards the latter (as is usual among the Formosans)
      who go about during the summer almost naked; --but the women, who are usually short and stout, are always clothed,
      although they throw these aside at bathing times, which occur twice a day, and appear entirely naked, without showing any shame.
      The Formosan women are usually as fair as the men, but they are short, stout, strong and laborious,
      as most of the work both in and out of doors falls upon them, the men being lazy loiterers,
      so that even the tilling of the soil, the planting of the rice crop, and the harvesting when it is ripe,
      is performed by the women. They are not in the habit of sowing or planting all their land,
      but each cultivates an extent which is considered sufficient to supply the family; and......

      [台灣熟番的婚俗]
      日前有友人新自台灣歸來,備述台灣熟番土人的婚嫁風俗,雖然奇怪極了,
      但他們婚姻的成立,完全基於愛情,也就不算得什麼奇事,現在我拉雜敘述於下。
      該番青年男子,如果平素已認識一個閨女,認為有結合的可能,便可央人向她的父母申述意思,
      同時夜晚置「一根木柴」在女宅門外,明晨男子前去觀察,倘使這一根木柴,仍在門外,
      就為女家拒婚的表示,若是收柴入戶,即已應允,到了這個地步,男女就可說是未婚夫婦了。
      他的父母也就許可和男子挽手遊玩,秘密談心,到了雙方情感如漆膠不能離時,
      便可正式舉行結婚,同居為夫婦。
      至若男女素不認識的呢,一旦發生了感情,求婚的手續,也是如上述的泡製,
      若女子中途變更情感,不願與男子往還,那便無須直告,祇將男子所置的木柴,拋在門外,
      便可表示婚姻中斷的徵候。
      觀察番人這樣的風俗,婚姻成立與否,雖然以「一根木柴」的取捨符號,代替女子情愛所鍾,
      然而究其婚約成立的結果,仍是根據愛情,當然神聖極了啊。
