- A look at the 1990-1995 Toyota Sera. A quirky and stylish Japanese domestic market only sports car/coupe with butterfly doors. A few have been imported to the UK and Europe. 31 years later, how does it drive on the roads of the UK?
The car that inspired a certain feature on Gordon Murray's McLaren F1.
Introduced in 1990, the Toyota Sera EXY10 was a forward thinking design from Toyota. This particular car is a 1990 phase 1, with an automatic gearbox.
Covers the Sera sold in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1995.
Contact details for sale to come soon, when car is ready. Watch this space.

How cool is that. And automatic. That thing will run forever
I was pleasantly surprised to see it was an auto. Unless it's on a performance car I'm so not bothered about manuals anymore 😄
I think it will!
I've been driving the Hyundai Coupe for about 4 months now and I'm still putting the wipers on every time I go to indicate
But but but, it's better because you can change gear and indicate at the same time.... even if you end up with no rubber left on the wipers and a windscreen entirely made of scratches 😂
@@JJonCars I do still prefer it being on the right to be fair!
anyone else spot the trick cyclist at 0:19 😂
Around 250 came to the UK and many others went overseas as grey imports, eg Australia. There is another name theory - Sera is Turkish for greenhouse. There was an optional centre armrest and it had an amazing sound system with movable speakers on the rear parcel shelf. The lack of proper rear seat belts and rollover protection issues made it impossible to homologate in many countries. It started life as the AXV11 show car and Toyota made a huge amount of styling models before deciding on the production version. Allegedly it came about because the Toyota chairman wanted it for his granddaughter.
I love seeing the uncle in the town shots.
Gwon lad!
Awesome and interesting video my dude. Although I'm managing to get anxiety from how much you turn the wheel vs how little the car moves
Thanks my man. Yes, like being the captain of a ship 😂.
Finally a informative video all I have had is Americans saying it’s not as good as a mustang it’s this it’s that you should get that’s not what I want I want a video like this well done mate
Cool little car, something very different 👌
Yeah they really are like nothing else :)
Such a funny car. Always assumed they were gullwing doors but it’s so obvious they’re not now! Very cool.
Haha yes, the intricacies of car door names. Thanks for watching :)
Super duper car. Gr8 looks and defo headturning looks :)
Definitely! 😁
@11:22 the "hook" is for the sun visors to rotate 90 degrees and clip into the middle :D
Aha! Makes sense, thanks for that. Is that mainly so you don't have to look at the passenger? 😂
incase you never found out, the katakana (or japanese characters) near the automatic transmission handle say 'shifuto rokku shisutemu', basically 'shift lock system'
Ah nice, yeah I did eventually figure out what it was.... it totally isn't pronounced like that though surely 😂
Good informative video. 👍
Thanks man!
The aw11 rims look right at home on the Sera
Totally agreed!
I quite like the look of the taillights. It's like what Nissan was going for with the new Z.
yeah pretty cool looking for a 30+ year old car!
I'm just being nosy, was the Sera sold on?
No, not yet! I think the owner is struggling to let go of it as it's basically a family heirloom now :)
Is it for sale?
I'm not sure what the owner is doing with it, I think he might be struggling to let go, it's just too weird and cool. I'll reply on here if I do hear anything from him! 😂
Fire the nuclear weapons hahahahaha
I bought this same car.. what a coincidence.. 😂😂😂.
The exact same one? Or just similar, same colour etc?
Har, the paint needs some work...
It definitely does 😂
You won't be old enough to remember Que Sera Sera: ruclips.net/video/3FKA-3uRdQY/видео.html
Haha, I am aware of the song (I think thanks to the Simpsons!), but it absolutely didn't click with me the link between that song and the meaning of the cars name 😂 Thanks Fred!
Perhaps they should have called it the Que Sera. Or that could have been a special edition!
Ser ah French for future
Hi I have a Toyota Sera, 1990 Auto, only done 75, 000miles, i have add HYDROLIC suspension to my SERA, if you are interested in doing a program about her. That would be fantastic. I can send you videos, i am sure you will be very impressed. My name David Macpherson.
Thanks David! Sounds very interesting. They're a very unusual car so they don't get lots of views on RUclips, but perhaps one day I will do another video on a Sera. Cheers for watching!
