1:05 is the most accurate depiction of your average Raid Group in anime. 2 competent people analyzing the strategy, the rest of the group in the background standing around or actively attempting to kill each other.
dude this one time i joined an ongoing raid with a group, the raid leader (sounded like an elderly woman ) was going over the plans on voice chat a couple of other party members were bickering and she scolded them because it was turning disruptive... later it turned out she was their mom,
What i find the most interesting in this scene is that this is the first time we see offensive spells used for defence instead of barier spell. Using Judrajim with (I assume) different polarity to counter the attack is such an amazing concept! This makes the magic system in Frieren so much deeper... Until now all we were shown were barriers and covering yourself with physical objects (Richter and Sharf for example)
I think there is a lore reason for why Frieren isn’t using barrier magic here. It’s been stated that defensive magic costs more mana than offensive magic. That being the case, it’s logical for Frieren to resist using defensive magic against a clone of herself. This is a fight against an opponent with equal skill AND mana. The mage who is the first to screw up their mana efficiency is the mage that is probably going to lose. That’s why both of them are using the same spell to attack the other, and using the same spell to block, because they don’t want to spend more mana than the other one is already using
It could also be that using modern magic would put Frieren at a disadvantage because, as Frieren stated earlier, being an elf makes her slow to adapt to new paradigms in magic. She is probably MORE skilled using old school magic, and it wouldn’t surprise me to learn the spells she’s throwing around so casually here are ANCIENT.
It cements what Friren tells us when she says modern defensive magic was built to counter Zoltraak exactly. Freren theoretically leaves a small opening when she both uses and blocks the spell, and the opening on use would cause Friren to die before a block would be necessary. Assuming both know that casting Zoltraak would be a deadly mistake, both would discard the spell expressly used to counter it. However, despite it being a mistake normally, they would consider blitzing each other down with it before the other could react as an opening move. After all, the delay from the confidence they wouldn't face it compounded with the normal block delay and quick casting speed invites a potential avenue for victory. The initial block was probably testing for that move, and now that it happened, both are confident that a surprise attack isn't coming since it didn't occur at the most optimal time and the other has shown they are looking out for it. As for Judrajim, I have a feeling its use has more to do with its random movements than normal combat effectiveness. We were told prior that facing yourself comes down to a contest of luck, and a lightning spell that constantly arcs eratically gives the most opportunities for luck to happen. After all, any spell shot at Friren point blank is getting dodged, but Judrajim has the chance of arcing in the direction of the dodge and hitting anyways.
@@theglitch5386It may also be that it’s particularly difficult for the barrier to block. They started with barriers but then went straight to Judrajim which suggests the barrier cannot block it or it cannot block it accurately or it would take a lot of energy to block. The barrier spell matches and disperses the energy of the spell it comes into contact with which is versatile but it could be that Judrajim bolts constantly shift in energy level and so they wouldn’t be completely blocked by the barrier spell. If anyone knows at least one spell that would bypass the modern barrier spell it would be Frieren or Serie
@@theglitch5386I think that another factor to start with Judrajim was Fern. Frieren clone do not wanted a 2 vs 1, and used magic with great area of effect, to eliminate Fern, without putting herself at disavantage with the original. Of course, Frieren read that pattern and adviced Fern about it.
2:14 What i loved the most about this fight was that the clone realised that something was wrong and reacted just by reading Frierens facial expression see the way she smiles and the clones eyes change in response these tiny details during the fight are outstanding! I actually think if she hadn't smiled Fern might of been able to end the fight there and then.
Oh shit, I forgot about that, Fern knows her weaknesses, while she can't just surprise her while she's sitting, a surprise attack while they're fighting off the other mimics could be a possibility.
To be precise frieren can not stop it only if she is caught be complete surprise plus while battling a mage as good as herself. Can't quick scope frieren when she is just chilling @@lolosh99
@@neerajnongmaithem392 yeah, they made the entire plan based on exploiting frieren's inability to detect mana WHILE casting a spell, which is exactly what happened. Mud clone was casting a spell point blank to finish off frieren, so fern could use zoltraak unnoticed
other Mages: *use barriers to counter spells (which uses more mana)* Frieren: *uses offensive magic with same power and aoe as the enemy's (uses less mana)* other Mages: *keeps distance to cast spells at safe distance* Frieren: *teleports to your face to blast your face off*
The problem with the barrier spell is how mana intensive it is. Fight against yourself turns into a battle of attrition very quickly the first to defensive magic is from that very moment a losing side. The reason why they had that contest at the start is probably to stop cheeky Zoltraak from ending the fight instantly. And the reason for those huge spells is to put the enemy at defense.
What I find interesting is that we can infer there were other defensive spells before mankind developed the anti-Zoltraak defenses, and they required less mana than these ones, but Frieren still blocked the incoming attacks with her own ones. It makes me think that this method is more efficient than the modern mages paradigm of defense-against-attack, but it can't be applied for some reason, probably that a Zoltraak can't block other Zoltraak.
@@granito555 I think there was an explanation when they took out the demon who invented Zoltraak. He was sorta unbeatable likely because no one had a counter for Zoltraak. This implies that it can't be blocked with offensive spells and you either need to dodge it or use the defensive magic specifically invented for blocking it.
What I love is how these top tier spells aren’t pretty or clean, they are almost cursed in appearance, as if some great suffering was needed to invent such a spell.
they almost look like ancient and cursed deep black magic that would be frowned upon/taboo to use. Volzanbel looks straight up as a fire as if it is summoned from the depths of Hell. this Hellfire, it evaporated a building sized stone in a blink. like wtf. also i like how in next part of the fight they just start using spells that seems like tearing the fabric of reality or breaking space-time wherever they are cast.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's some crazy ancient shit that's been long forgotten, or straight up outlawed by some magical committees for being too destructive or rooted in dark/cursed magic.
One detail I love about this fight is at 2:12, when the music goes quiet and changes to a rendition of Fern's theme the moment she shoots zoltrak. Just goes to show how good thematic story telling can be without dialogue and how pivitoal fern was to this fight and the heights she has grown since learning magic.
Man the fact that we havent seen her use these spells till this episode is insane, she truely believes that these destructive flashy spells are only useful to fight against an enemy of her own caliber. I kinda wanna see frieren vs serie bc i fear that no other foe is gonna make her fight like this, its kinda beautiful.
Well there are great demons equally strong and even more skilled than Frieren, the power system balance in Frieren it's great, there are no unkillable beings here.
We never will. Unlike the Cell Games, the cameramen would be obliterated in the first few seconds. It would be like working at ground zero in a nuclear war.
This show really proves a point with a "less is more" approach. Not that it actually is "less" per say, but the actual fighting part of the fight scene isn't very long. It doesn't have to be, because the story uses the timing of it's music with some very impactful flashbacks to deliver a very emotional climax to the scene. I think watching the clip of just the fight on youtube doesn't do it much justice if you're only seeing it for the first time though, it's absolutely brilliant when you're watching the episode and everything's in context.
I'm just happy that we fights we do get are actually superbly animated, soundscaped and choreographed. You can tell that they went for quality over quantity as opposed to 95 % of "isekai" or fantasy-themed animes we had in recent years. I can watch a 3 second clip of Linie conjuring an axe and tearing up the crenellations to gain momentum to crush Stark a hundred times before I will watch what passes for a fight scene in "reincarnated into a fantasy world as some uninspired MC template with -insert modern convenience here-".
The time available to produce the next episode (ie one week) frequently limits how ambitious the animators can be with their animation. So a short combat sequence means the animation team has more leeway to really go all out on the quality of the animation therein.
@@adamwu4565 That would open the question of how the more impressive shows like OPM or the Fate series manage to do it despite that. It's worth noting that not all studios produce episodes WHILE airing. That's mostly a factor for long-running shows like Naturo, Bleach and One Piece - where the show has been on air so long that no amount of backlog would've let them handle the demand. Shorter "one season" animes are frequently made months, sometimes years in advance. For them, it's more a question of production costs (billable hours) than total time spent per episode.
Something I noticed about the episode, this is the only time Frieren doesn't just spam Zoltraak for offense, which she previously called "good enough" to defeat mages of that era. We got to see how two ancient spellcasters fought, and the power they wielded.
Notice how, at the last moment, just before Fern launches her attack, Frieren smiled, and the clone, seeing this, frowned. Did this tip off the clone that a surprise attack from Fern was incoming? This further emphasizes why Frieren is usually so stone-faced and stoic in combat, and taught Fern to do the same, and why most of the other mages also try to keep their facial expressions minimized while fighting. The smallest facial tic can tip off a sufficiently skilled opponent and help them anticipate your next move.
Battlemage in most fantasy is always shown like that if I am not wrong they're lore accurately immune to their own spells so using a AoE magic point blank is viable
0:30 I love this detail, frieren and its clone doesn't care about the wall falling to crush them, because whoever tries to evade the wall... will be open to attacks. What frieren did is she casted an offensive spell to her clone, that can simultaneously destroy the wall to prevent herself from getting crushed.
They really made it feel like two gods were going against each other, they handled the symmetric aesthetic of them fighting so amazingly well. While with Ubel it was mostly mirrored close combat with a couple spells,Frieren is just raw power and you can really feel it,especially with that badass slow walk in front of the fire
Denken fire magic, just fire. Frieren fire magic, evaporates stone. Also I love how it shows how Frieren actual spell usage. She mostly used this purple lightning beam instead of the Zoltraak versions.
I mean it is logical. No way you can avoid a point blank shot to the face. Even if your shot is homing, with enough distance she can predict the trajectory and prepare a defense.
This was somewhat hinted during the Denken fight where she closed in quick then blasted him point blank, now the clone is trying the same thing to Frieren. Love these more subtle approach in their fights as opposed to most anime having monologue long explanations during their fights.
@@snimon5824 I'd like to think that the clone is smart enough to know that the safest place in this fight is to be as close to Frieren as possible, because it definitely knows that Fern is waiting somewhere.
Great to see Frieren using other spells, way more chaotic than the usual zoltraak. Frieren may have a flaw, but it becomes impractical to try to overcome it if one isn’t even as strong as herself. That is there only to give false hope, or as an elaborated bait.
I like how those spells turn into pure chaos: Purple mess or disintegration of the falling pillar, good luck to survive such AOEs, those look like a pure death if they touch you.

One copl detail is that frieren can sense fern, but rhe copy cant becuase she is casting a spell. This means freiren was intentionally putting herself in disadvantageous situations to give fern the opening.
The original Frieren can't either. Because if the original Frieren could, so could the clone. They both casted a spell simultaneously, Fern started hiding her mana at that point, and then continued hiding her mana keeping herself hidden from both Frierens. They just planned out the entire battle sequence in advance, so original Frieren knows where Fern will be. That's why they showed a part with a drawing on the ground
@@theunknownperson666real frieren was not casting at the last moment. That is why she was smiling as she could detect Fern, while the fake frieren casting could not
Idk they were fighting inside an enclosed space under tons of stone and dirt. It's probably just a fraction of her spells or simply the strongest she's willing to pull up indoors.
One of this series greatest strengths is how well it handles the flow of time. The 80 years since Zolraak was introduced to the world by the demons is less time to her than smart phones have existed to my 80 year old grandfather. To her it's still new, but Fern has always had knowledge of it. World building and character growth in perfect balance.
That animation is so cool that I just cant stop looking to read the subtitles, at this point I will have to watch it twice and I know I wont regret it!
Frieren says to Fern "even I can't detect you easily". The implication being that she CAN detect Fern, if she really tries and focuses. ie Fern is not completely invisible, and she cannot successfully hide from Frieren in a one-on-one scenario. Frieren needs to be distracted so she cannot focus on searching for Fern. This in turn means that the Fern clone will also not be completely undetectable. If there is someone among the examinees who is a specialist at detecting hidden mana, that person may be able to detect the Fern clone and warn the others if the Fern clone tries to ambush them.
The issue wasnt that frieren couldnt detect fern only. The other issue is that when frieren fires a spell she can no longer detect mana a very childish issue as noted in the show as even kids learn to not do that...but she has all the time in the world
The window in which Frieren drops her mana detection after casting a spell is very short. Not long enough for Fern to snipe her on her own in a 1 v 1 scenario. The strategy they used was for Frieren to provoke the clone into casting a spell to create the window, and then for Fern to conceal her Mana and hide. From that point on the Frieren clone doesn’t know where Fern is. It could find her again with Mana detection, but not while being distracted by having to fight the real Frieren. That in turn gives the opportunity to maneuver the clone into a position where Fern can snipe it with a surprise attack from an unexpected direction.
@@adamwu4565 in the end fern found it out and is only a young adult, not her prime as well as the fact 11 other human sorcerers have found this weakness in her abilities and have beaten her because of it Even Qual a genius most likely knew this and used it to win a 1v4

@@DiamondDog_ I think that might actually be Frieren's fault. At the last moment, just before Fern attacked, she couldn't contain her pride in her apprentice, dropped her usual stoic battle-face, and smiled. And the clone noticed it. It probably tipped the clone off that an attack from Fern was incoming, giving it a split second of extra time to cast the defence spell.
@@adamwu4565 Yes, however, Frieren's clone is a perfect image of himself now, but the Frieren doesn't realize it, and in the end, Frieren is the one who defeats his own clone, later there will be a funny scene where the only person in history, Serie is rejected by humans because of his invitation to become his student, and that is Fern.
@@DiamondDog_ Fern had already crippled the clone at that point with her second Zoltraak snipe. The manga called it a "mortal wound", so the clone was already dying. It just didn't die instantly, and had enough time left to counterattack Fern, so Frieren finished it off.

Frieren's little smile, and her clone's expression change in reaction to it, gave away Fern's attack just soon enough for the clone to block and survive it. The attention to detail in this anime is insane.

@@friedhotwings Disagree. We see Methode standing near Fern's clone as it disintegrates, meaning Methode had managed to close the gap on Fern, despite being attacked by her Zoltraak barrage. This means that their battle had been fairly evenly matched, and might have even been tipping into Methode's favor before it was cut short. Fern also has no answer against Wirbel's Solganeil. In fact, her strategy of launching a barrage from a distance works against her since it's much easier to see her entire body from a distance. Meaning she'd struggle against Wirbel and Ubel. Finally, we've never actually seen Land go all out. But the fact that Fern wasn't able to tell that the Land she was with during the 1st Exam was a clone means she'd be at a severe disadvantage from a tactical perspetive. Im not sure if the defensive spell is automatic, since all the mages seem be consciously aware of threats to cast them (otherwise ambush won't even work on mages) We have never seen her cast precise defense before since she never had to care about mana conservation, so her barriers are usually a bit larger than needed. I see it as showing Frieren being so skilled and precise in casting defense that she can accurately predict where the opponent staff is pointing.

Yeah, I remember watching the latest episode and being a bit confused the clone wasn't dead until I realised this must've failed.
That is a detail am noticing just now even after 2 rewatches TuT, explains why clone didnt die . i thought fern was just weaker
What i love about Frieren is that they dont announce every single attack. They just show dont tell
Its scary to think that fern's copy is just somewhere else lurking and waiting to jumpscare zoltraak them. But dont spoil me, its just my speculation.
Omg wtf thats so true. Puts a whole new meaning on “your zoltraak can kill me”
Oh shit, I forgot about that, Fern knows her weaknesses, while she can't just surprise her while she's sitting, a surprise attack while they're fighting off the other mimics could be a possibility.

@@neerajnongmaithem392 yeah, they made the entire plan based on exploiting frieren's inability to detect mana WHILE casting a spell, which is exactly what happened. Mud clone was casting a spell point blank to finish off frieren, so fern could use zoltraak unnoticed

other Mages: *use barriers to counter spells (which uses more mana)*
Frieren: *uses offensive magic with same power and aoe as the enemy's (uses less mana)*
other Mages: *keeps distance to cast spells at safe distance*
Frieren: *teleports to your face to blast your face off*
Frieren did something similar when fighting Denken. After her surprise attack distracted him she went up close and hit him
@@sinisterdragoon04 The Shot-Traak

I kinda wanna see frieren vs serie bc i fear that no other foe is gonna make her fight like this, its kinda beautiful.
Well there are great demons equally strong and even more skilled than Frieren, the power system balance in Frieren it's great, there are no unkillable beings here.

She is not a mage of this era, so ofc she needs to use the full arsenal against herself :)

I love this detail, frieren and its clone doesn't care about the wall falling to crush them, because whoever tries to evade the wall... will be open to attacks.

However true Frieren's smile gave it away.

I really do love this anime like in a different level. It may sound weird but it gives me a nostalgic feeling when I was a kid playing a game on PSP.

We have never seen her cast precise defense before since she never had to care about mana conservation, so her barriers are usually a bit larger than needed.
I see it as showing Frieren being so skilled and precise in casting defense that she can accurately predict where the opponent staff is pointing.
