    That’s a ton of useful information for me. And well explained, too. Very clear. Thanks.
    The old factory loft I live in has a steam radiator boiler system, where most roads use the two-pipe system, but a few rads are one-pipe. I was told by some technicians that steam rads should never have steam vents on them. So I went around the building yesterday and removed all the vents and replaced them with 1/8” plugs. After seeing this video I think I’ll replace the plugs with new steam vents, but only on the rads using a one-pipe system.

      definitely replace the single pipe radiators with air vents!! Remove those plugs as the radiators need to breathe!!!

    Valves (air valve)need to be changed on a routine maintenance basis, if not sooner?

    great video. In old systems does one need to remove and clean out the interior of the rad? does rust or sludge build up inside cast iron? I wonder how to get a system inspection, and report. Every HVAC contractor claims to know steam systems but tend to show their lack of experience once they are on site. I have so many questions and find limited information when it comes to single pipe steam. I appreciate your content.

      Thanks for your comment. The interior of a rad should not be cleaned because the steam cannot carry any debris from the boiler or the pipes into the rad. Rust or sludge does not build up in the rads on a steam system. Sludge will collect in the low points in the system. If you would like to arrange a system inspection and report, please email us hello@ironworksradiators.ca and we'd be happy to make arrangements for this service. If you have other questions, please let us know!

    Thank you for explaining this. My one pipe steam radiators only turn on randomly and only stay on for about an hour, is that normal? It's generally quite cold in our place. We don't have access to our boiler or any kind of thermostat.

      This sounds like an operational issue with the boiler. We would want to know what types of controls are on the boiler in order for us to advise. It shouldn't be cold.

    Great video, how do I clean the vents

    • @ironworksradiatorsinc
      @ironworksradiatorsinc  6 месяцев назад

      If you mean the inside of the vent, there is no cleaning required. If they are no longer functioning, they need to be replaced. If you are referring to cleaning the outside of the vent, just a damp cloth with a mild cleaning agent is sufficient.

    Do you recommend using a thermostatic control 1/8” with air vent to keep service valve open full time? Tenants are closing service valve at different times to turn heat off. Thx

    Why would 1 of my Radiators not get hot untill i raise the heat up to 74 degree. It is the last Radiator on th 2 floor. It seem like the pressure

      Is this a steam system or hot water? If it is steam is it two pipe or single pipe?

    Does the single pipe have any advantages to double pipe system?

    • @ironworksradiatorsinc
      @ironworksradiatorsinc  4 месяца назад +1

      A one-pipe system only has one advantage over two pipe -- the cost of installation is less as you are only running one set of lines instead of two. But, it had disadvantages in that it is less efficient and sometimes noisier.

      @@ironworksradiatorsinc could it be made efficient enough with proper air vents and bigger piper diameter? I also wonder if could be put underground for about 100' in a straight line, granted insulated properly. Thanks

      the air vents always need to be sized appropriately to maximize the efficiency. The horizontal run must rise towards the radiators, oversizing the pipe does not help with efficiency, as it provides a greater surface area to condense the steam on. The only other way to increase single pipe efficiency would be to hook a small vacuum line up instead of the air vents and run the system in a vacuum. @@fedorbutochnikow5312
