loved the video. big fan of Ranpo works, but sadly it is very hard to find him here in south America, of course i prefer reading in Spanish, but even in English it is very hard to find. hope that changes at sometime
You mention at the end that his books are popular with Chinese readers, in my experience this is true. Japanese mysteries are very popular, not just the writers but detective Conan series as well. What seems odd to me is that there has not been a great blossoming of Chinese mystery writers like there was in the 20th century in Japan. If you look at the mysteries that are popular in China you will see a lot of Japanese authors and you will see Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle but he will not see very many Chinese writers. I guess Chinese writers just wants to write wuxia stuff…
Haha Chinese writers do like to write Wuxia, but I think there are actually a lot of people who are writing mysteries in China as well. I tend to think the reason why I don't know a lot of them is that I didn't look for them, just like I didn't know a lot of western sci-fi writers even though it's a huge genre 😅 But I do plan to explore more of Chinese mysteries in the upcoming year and maybe talking about them in my channel :D
@@TheBookishLand It’s entirely possible that they have not yet built up a Fanbase for domestic authors. Whenever I look on the various charts of most popular mysteries in China they are all dominated by foreign authors.
Been a big fan of detective Conan series for many years, but never knew much about where the Edogawa part of the main characters name comes from…. But now I have some of his mysteries on my kindle and will soon get started 😎 Edgar Allan Poe doesn’t get much recognition as a mystery writer these days, but as I recall Sherlock Holmes talks about how Poes detective is an idiot who takes a month to solve a simple case.
I first watched bungo stray dogs and I saw ranpo so I wanted to see the real person’s works so now I’m here
