I've watched a few of these videos now, it seems to be a standard process and it's actually a very clever autogenous butt weld technique if you think about it. there's generally spring tension on the wire so the weld mushrooms out from the point of contact, rejecting the weld impurities from the core and shielding it from further contamination. then the impure metal is cut away. it's probably extremely repeatable, as well.
