- This is a review of the remake of Destroy All Humans, which was developed by Black Forest Games, published by THQ Nordic and released in 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Despite having been looking forward to playing this since it was announced out of nowhere, I ended up being disappointed by the outcome and I feel like a more ambitious take on the universe of Destroy All Humans could have benefited the series a lot more than this. But anyway... Let's take a look at what we actually got...

Thank you very much for review. Glad I wasn't the only one that was disappointed by this failure of a remake.
Here's my issues with it.
- can't PK while Holobob (blows cover way too quickly)
- PK vehicles instantly explode when they hit anything, and no longer bounce around like they should
- PK vehicles do not damage buildings and set the windows on fire
- PK Vehicles takes several seconds to lift off the ground and is not instant.
- Cannot Push and Pull with PK like in the original.
- certain buildings and structures cannot be abducted (ferris wheel / cow statue)
- when extracting live humans each enemy used to produce different valued DNA, remake everyone has 25 dna.
- mutants cannot be PK at all even when stunned
- weather balloons now track the player in the air, original they were stationary
- tesla coils are pathetically weak and not a hazard anymore
- robots don't even talk like they used to.
- majestic agents no longer commonly armed with laser guns, and just armed with pistols most of the time
- saucer sonic booms nerfed and no longer cause objects to launch and bounce around
- because of new mechanic lock on, you'll end up locking onto props and trying to PK enemies when you end up Transmorgifying props instead
- no car tyre screeches, no car horns, no metal sounds when a vehicle collides with something.
- no screen shaking with big explosions
- long loading times
- no stats for Crypto clones created / ufo landings / buildings destroyed.
- no witty remarks from Pox when idle in the mothership menu.
- no B Movie stuff in the menu, (like trailers, beta and alpha gameplay of their game)
- No DNA tracking on the HUD. (have to press pause to see how much DNA you have)
- Game constantly stuttering with frame drops when too much destruction.
- Game crashing especially capitol city when too many buildings collapse.
- Cannot PK Forklifts.
- Lots of cut dialogue from NPCs. "Halloween eh? well I dressed as a cop!" "Flying Away? Typical Alien"
- Cannot knock over people with PK Vehicles, even if one lands on a person, they wont take damage, sometimes physics bug out and the vehicle launches off into the sky.
- Physics is a little broken, getting hit by an explosive while jetpacking makes you go flying really fast in a direction erratically.
- Original had a really cool menu system, the new one is simplistic and boring, and first time playing did you accidently quit the main menu by mistake? I did.
- When Crypto sneaked he did a funny walk cycle.
- When Crypto moved slowly he would bare his teeth showing agresson, but would close his mouth while running. This is not present in the remake.
- Certain small tub pools can be destroyed in the original but not in the remake.
- Last Ion Detonator ability is completely pointless and annoying.
- Having the ability of getting ammo from blowing up buildings, really ruins the immersion factor and coolness of the explosive display, when you have bright glowing green and blue rings floating in the sky.
- Challenges are broken especially Abduction, when you are supposed to PK people, but end up PKing vehicles and wasting several seconds.
Woah that is a very comprehensive list of everything wrong with the game! Loads of stuff there I didn’t even pick up on. You should do a review of the game pointing all of that stuff out!
It’s weird how not very many other reviewers pointed out it’s flaws considering how obvious they are. I guess being more familiar with the original game makes certain aspects of the remake stand out more but even having no experience with the original, I still feel like it’s flaws are so clear at times. It all just boils down to having low production value which is such a shame :(

I honestly can't believe how bad it is. The original has some great stuff but this Remake executes most of it in the worst way possible.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks they could have done a better job with the remake! I was starting to feel like I was the only person being heavily critical of it for a second there haha!
@@PixelPursuit Same, dude. I'm glad that someone is going in depth about the major issues this game has compared to the original. I feel like most of the critical reviews from major outlets used reviewers that didn't really understand how the original played compared to this remake.
Yeah, I've been noticing all of the big reviews have been ignoring blatant issues with the performance of the game too, I feel like everyone is going easy on it for some reason! I would imagine that most of the major outlet reviewers either haven't played the original or don't remember much about it, so they're coming at it from a completely different angle to the people like us who remember the original games.
I’m so glad I didn’t pick this game up on the PS4 now after watching this video. I was in a retro game store last week thinking of picking up the PS2 version of this game, think I’ll get that one instead of the PS4 version. I’ll check to see how much it is on PSN as I’ve got a few PS2 games now via there. Great video Rob, take care mate
Apparently the PS4 Pro runs the game a lot more efficiently than the standard model, so I guess this is an example of a game that was made with more powerful hardware in mind. That's the issue with this trend of released updated versions of consoles later down the road... It's a bit of a slap in the face for people who were early adopters...
Definitely give the original version a go though, it's really fun and it didn't really need a remake to be honest because it still holds up surprisingly well! The second game is also very good and in a lot of ways it's better than the original!

I'm amazed that nobody ever mentions that the graphics are actually completely butchered. The original did not look cartoony, it didn't look realistic but it was not a cartoon. Turning the graphics into generic cartoon graphics makes it look dull and uninspired.
That's true! I don't really mind the new art style in general, I feel like if it had more money pumped into it, it could have looked good in a more cartoony style, but as it is it just doesn't look very good. The original holds up a lot better in that area for sure.
Great review as always. I knew there was something up with the PK abilty but i couldn't put my finger on it. The secondary objectives in the missions were a nice implementation imo but it still wasn't nothing all that new though. Still hope the game sells well so we could possibly get a remake/remaster to the second game. At least its another DaH platinum trophy in my collection lol.

Yeah I don't understand how they messed up the PK ability so much, it was easily my favourite thing about the original games too, I used to love throwing things around and causing chaos with it while disguised! I mean there is an argument to be made that the optional objectives are actually bad because they force you to play the game in a really specific way rather than allowing you to mess around and do things how you want. Still though I appreciate they're there for completionists.
I never got the platinum on any of the DAH games :( I can't be bothered to get all of the drones in the first game for the platinum, I never actually played the second game on PS4 and I just haven't gotten around to finishing off the remake yet. Does Path of the Furon have trophies? I never actually played that one and I know literally nothing about it...
@@PixelPursuit Some objectives in the game were very unclear. In one of the minigames in Area 42 it counts the soldiers as objects for some reason and I was failing the mission constantly because that wasn't specified lol. The drones in the remake don't have trophies tied to then so that's good. Now about Path of the Furon... I haven't played the game either and don't know much about it too lol. It definitely wasn't received as well as the previous games plus the PS3 version was reportedly very buggy at times. It doesn't have trophy support so I guess I won't be picking it up anytime soon. Would love to see you try it to see if it's worthy of a review.

what potato are you playing on? I got a ps4 pro and the game plays flawlessly, no lag, no bad models, no bad cutscenes, no bad anything, I am honestly dumbfounded as to why the game your playing is having all these problems that do not exist for mine. the original ps4 sadly can not keep up with the Pro version it seems. Also the humans are intentionally modeled to be stereotypical cartoony and 1950's looking, I think it blends with the game perfectly. This is a perfect remake of a marvelously fun game

Even if it runs flawlessly on the PS4 Pro it doesn't excuse how poorly it can run and look at times on the standard version. The standard version is the one most people have and other games run perfectly on it so there's no excuse for Destroy All Humans.
To be honest if there wasn't insane texture pop-in, jump cuts and other stuff going on I probably wouldn't have minded the new art style but it just looked a bit ugly at times because of all the technical hiccups. I'm super glad you're enjoying it! I personally think it's pretty bad as far as remakes go though. It's still a good game, but that's because the original is so good! :)

I feel like you could sometimes tell that the dialogue was a bit compressed and it's just a bit of a shame they didn't re-record it so that they could have added some new interactions and new missions too. That would have been really cool! The music definitely shouldn't have been taken from the original, while it's pretty good I feel like it's quite repetitive and doesn't kick into a high enough gear to match the destruction you're causing sometimes.
The actual acting for the dialogue is awesome though, I love Crypto and Pox's voices and I wouldn't want them to change the actors or anything, just bring them back to reprise their roles.
I've always seen this game at a retro game store but had no clue about a re-release on ps4/xbox one.
They didn't do a very good job with marketing it really. Although having said that it did get a really cool collector's edition, I guess they just didn't have the budget to show up at any major game conferences or anything though. There's a remake of the second game that came out really recently now too!

This was such a random game to remake. Did anyone ask for it? If anything I’d have expected a remaster/HD collection.
Yeah I agree, I would have preferred a full on new game or at least a remake that was significantly different to the original. There’s not much of a reason to play this over the original version really. The original PS2 version is even available on the PS4 too, so that just makes the situation even stranger!

Yeah and there was that super expensive edition that came with the huge statue as well! They really went all out with promoting this didn't they!

The original must’ve been fantastic. I never played the original, but did play the sequel and have some great nostalgia from it, even though I barely played it.
Because I’m playing it on PC and it plays generally amazingly.
The original was much better than the remake that's for sure! Even the original had it's flaws but I feel like it was much more polished than the remake and definitely had more charm to it!
I had a ton of fun with the sequel too! Particularly because of the two player co-op mode! I never did get around to playing any of the later games though...

Yeah, I was pretty underwhelmed with what they did here. I feel like they should have gone away from the original game a lot more and kind of done their own thing with it, instead they stuck way too close and it just feels far too similar to the original (while also making some things worse)... It's not a very good remake and the series deserves better.
Bro this is why i dont play on consoles, on PC I had solid 60fps, no framerate issues at all, PS4 is at the end of its life, bruh it requires 16gb of ram and a 4gb vram GPU, ofc it runs like shit on PS4, buy a pc with current hardware, plug it on your tv with a controller then enjoy everything at consistent 60
Yeah it probably is a lot better on PC but that doesn't excuse the fact it doesn't run or look that great on the PS4. I mean if games like The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima look as good as they do, I'm sure Destroy All Humans could have been made a bit better too. I know they're obviously first party games with huge budgets, but you get my point haha! I imagine though that the PC version is by far the best way to play this game, loads of the graphical issues are probably non-existent and the loading times are probably way better too.

I lent the original from a friend last year while the remakester was coming out and completed everything that counted towards 100% (except I never did the final boss without cheating, so me save is at 99%). I hated how the game defaults to certain settings whenever you start a new game, so your preferred settings must be inputted manually each time (especially SUBTITLES). (I liked the fact that there was a 60Hz mode and there's 16:9 for those who care.) Remakester I herd somewhat sucks, can't say stuff, haven't played that.
I don't think I ever got 100% in the original game because I couldn't be bothered to find all of the drone collectibles. I liked how in the second game you unlocked a thing that displayed an icon on the map showing where they all were, but in the first game it would have taken forever to find them.
Is the final boss really that hard that you did literally everything else and couldn't do that? Haha, to be fair the last boss is super annoying, so I don't blame you for not bothering with it!
Huh, I never noticed it reset certain things when you start a new game. I guess maybe I didn't start the game again that much to notice! But yeah the remake could have been a lot, lot better. It was really disappointing...
RE: Collectibles - I got all of them in the first level on me own, then I used some guides. It really helped with the DNA grinding though, had to do some at the end side there.
RE: Difficulty - I found the saucer sections a bit difficult in general, had to try those a few times, along a few other things. That difficulty ramps up during the final mission quite a lot.
RE: Resets - When ye go back to the very main menu and pick New Game, ye can visibly see the game defaulting its settings, especially with a CRT TV with 60Hz mode active, which causes a visible switch with the display mode, as with when ye turn it on.
When i play this game it makes me wish i was playing the original instead

Yeah, I would probably never go back to this when the original is right there and offers a better experience. That's true! There was quite a lot more extras in the original. The remake has the skins I guess, but that's tainted by the fact that the best ones are microtransations :(
I didn't even bother to go back and get the platinum haha! As much as I would be interested in playing Reprobed, I just don't know if I want to bother with another remake after the first one haha!
They probably should have just made a brand new game in the series instead, but obviously it makes a lot more sense business-wise to remake the originals first.

No problem, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I probably won't be playing the Avengers game when it comes out, it doesn't look like my kind of thing at all and I doubt I would like it. I don't tend to like beat em up or hack and slash style games and it looks like it's going to be mostly that kind of thing. It might be good for people into that though, but it's not really an area I'm experienced in! :D

Yeah for sure there's value in it coming to PC for the first time and that's awesome! I was looking at it from the perspective of it being on the PS4 though and for that system I don't think the graphics are that great (they're good though, just not mind blowing) and it's kinda pointless as a remake because the original is already on PS4 and it just doesn't add enough features on top of what the original already has.
The remakes sucked. And they managed to mess up the pk ability. Literally the main ability You can't knock around objects like the original. And they replaced one of the officers in the farm level cutscene with a black officer. So fuckn dumb and totally unnecessary. Idk why everyone is praising it. Thanks for your review

I know... :( I swear for the next video I will try and come up with a solution to that. I know I said that before but with this being a brand new game I wanted to get the video done as soon as possible so I stuck to my old method!
So... I finally got around to looking into the situation with these clashing frame rates between my camera and the gameplay and it turns out that my camera can do 30fps in 1080p... It's just that my video settings were set to PAL where the standard for video was 25fps, so I just changed it to NTSC and it's now recording in 30fps. The good news is that from now on, all of my videos should be at 30fps consistently... The bad news is that I've made over 60 reviews not knowing that my camera could do that and feel like I've been a fool for not looking into this sooner haha!
Nevermind I guess... At least my videos from here on out will be higher quality and you'll be able to watch them :D

Haha, I don't mean to make it sound terrible! It's not a bad game at all and there's loads of enjoyable elements to it but I do think it's a bad remake because all of those good elements are already in the original game and the remake doesn't expand on them or add much new. It's probably not worth paying full price for to be honest though because it's very short and it is basically identical to the original game aside from a few minor things. When it goes down in price it's definitely worth picking up, maybe when it's like £15 or somewhere around there, that seems like a really good price for it.
But yeah, the skin pack is absolutely terrible! Those skins should have just been in the game! It's really irritating how the best skins are locked behind that skin pack too, I would have loved the clown skin :(

I'm pretty sure that I state in the video that you can get the original PS2 version on the PS4 store. So it's actually just as obtainable as the remake!

Thank you! Yeah if you've played the PS4 port of the original then there's really no reason to buy the remake. It's just super similar to the original in almost every way.
