Many / most of the inverter style generators do not have hard grounds- - they have a floating ground. We, in the camping world, have made a "cheater" plug (neutral - ground) that binds them together (aka similar to a binding screw in your home panel) to allow our electrical monitoring devices to function
So the only way to stop my reverse polarity light coming on is with this cheater plug? I have a Honda 2000i going to my sailboat. No light when on shore power, just with generator
@@djkillachris - pretty much - And yes it works with both the Honda EU2000i and a 2nd for the Predator 3500 inverter gen 'cause our power pedestal also does NOT engage without it. I was a lite plug (glows green to indicate power) - wrapped grn tape around it to indicate that it was "special", and took a wire fishing leader (built in loops, snaps) wrapped around the handle to attach -- and keep track of) Total $5 for the cord cap (plug), $3 for the leader, $0.02 of wire and been working for 25+ years.
So how do you square up Reverse Polarity with a 'Centre-Tapped' inverter such as a Renogy unit? These have on their 230 Volt model; 115 Volts running down the Neutral and 115 Volts running down the Live - this 115 down the Neutral will always show as Reverse polarity?
The Reverse Polarity can also light up due to a poor connection (rather than the polarity being reversed). This happened to me at a marina in Mexico, thinking that the marina was badly wired.. Cleaned up the corroded terminals and the light when off.
Bro, it’s simply that the generator has a floating neutral. Just buy or make a plug adapter that bond’s the neutral together with the ground at the generator.

Thanks Jeff. Really appreciate your tech talks. Always learn something.
Is the neutral to ground bond typically done internally on a generator? Or could this happen do to corroded ground wire leaving genrator?
Could the shore power cord, which gets rained on, could the cord or plug shorted out from heavy rain to cause the polarity light to come on.
