"SOLITARY ACTS IN THE PRESENCE OF OTHERS", the debut EP by the revived instrumental band RIVER GOURGER, is available to stream and puchase via Bandcamp. Recorded in 2013, the EP's five tracks blend the atmosphere of post rock/shoegaze with the technicality of math rock and will appeal to fans of Covet, Explosions in the Sky, Strawberry Girls, and similar guitar-based instrumental acts.
River Gourger was active in Santa Cruz in the early 2010s, and featured Phil Rudock (primary composer) on guitar, Josef and Elliott Kay on bass/guitar, and Jaime Sanchez on drums. 2013 saw the band perform a handful of live shows, release a demo, and record raw tracks for the planned EP. Production progressed slowly until 2023, when Sebastian Sampson was recruited to mix the album after faithfully reconstructing the guitars' pedal board FX chain using modern amp modelers. The EP's release features new album artwork by guitarist Elliott Kay and a (first ever) logo by Patrick Blackstorm.
Featuring the creative synergy of a band whose members have all been musically active during the interim period, "Solitary Acts" stands on its own as a timely release in today's musical landscape.
