The 2013-14 season was truly one of the most roller-coaster of all PL seasons. The Sunderland great escape is an amazing story, but during those last few weeks anything could have happened. As a Liverpool fan it still hurts how it ended for us, but how entertaining we were to watch all year with a thin squad. SAS + Sterling, along with Coutinho, Henderson and Gerrard in midfield. The back 4 + goalie, well let's just say we weren't surprised we shipped 50 goals in 38 games. But look at the rest. Chelsea had Mourinho again. And they were in the race right till the end. Inexplicable losses to Villa and the aforementioned Sunderland brought them down to 3rd. Arsenal, who finished - well, you know where they finished - believe it or not, held the top spot that season for the most number of days. And before the turn of the year they were in insane form. City were also scoring heaps of goals and managed to cross the 100 goals mark (in all comps) by Dec or Jan if I recall correctly. Just ridiculous. And they had the legend Kompany, an unstoppable Toure and 3 strikers scoring 20+ (Aguero, Dzeko, Negredo). Toure also scored 23 from central midfield. That is what imo pushed them to the top spot by the end.
totally agree the problem with Chelsea wasn't the defence they had the best defensive record in the league that season conceding just 27 goals it was upfront which let them down. City scored 102 goals, Liverpool scored 101 goals whereas Chelsea scored 71 goals Aguero, Dzeko and Negredo got 42 goals combined, Suarez and Sturridge got 52 goals combined whilst Chelsea's strikers Torres, Eto'o and Ba only scored 19 goals combined.
