Indeed my neighbours' donkey is also a quality guard donkey except it has a really brash and playful nature but it's bold and impressive for it took down coyotes and even fended off pumas, wild or feral dogs, wolf packs and etc, black bears even, protecting the livestock. Way better than most guardian dogs. For real.

This is absolutely true. We had two different donkeys. They would be especially important with young livestock. They are also great for halter breaking young cattle. They are strong and stubborn. ❤❤
I love donkeys, they are so smart. Our pregnant mare foaled on New Year's Day of 2000. It was late evening and I heard both of our donkeys putting out a distress scream so I went out to check and there was our new foal, not even out of the birthing sack and coyotes had surrounded the Corral. Our donkeys, Daisy and Dusty, stood guard, each on an opposite side of the mother pointing outward towards where the coyotes were to make sure that the mom was safe while she was cleaning her baby up. It was an amazing experience. What a lot of people don't know is that donkeys hate anything that's a canine, so even your dog would be attacked if it was not introduced to the donkey, so they knew it was family. They're Fearless they will go after the wolf, coyotes, and even chase the javelinas. That was many years ago, and unfortunately, they've both crossed the rainbow bridge, but they're still alive in our hearts. The foal is now 23 years old, living its best life with a woman who used to ride him at the facility we moved him to. We get a Christmas card every year from them.

Donkeys are pretty common guard animals for herds. Llamas too, but with llamas you cannot have more than one per herd or the llamas will pair off and not integrate into the herd. Texas A&M is/was doing a massive study on the efficacy of Llamas as guard animals and from my recollection herds with llamas saw a ~10% increase in livestock survival.
Donkeys only job in farms is to guard. I’m confused how many people don’t know this. They’re very very protective and will trample/bite/toss/kick any wild canine animal and such. They eat coyotes for breakfast. Edit: Two jobs. In some places they carry heavy things too.

i have a neighbor with a donkey who has a pen next to the road. He put signs up EVERYWHERE saying 'donkey will bite' 'don't feed the donkey' 'danger donkey will kick' but he still gets several people a day stopping and trying to pet or feed the donkey. The donkey loves it and has been getting fat.

My current cat, is about 18-20 pounds and is the sweetest thing ever when he's laying on my lap. Yet, every time he catches a mouse or any small creature? He becomes a totally different being. Yet, he'll intentionally hold back just enough to prolong the absolute agony that the animal experiences. He's even slept near the suffering mouse until it becomes brave enough to try to escape once again, and WACK!! He smashes his prey down again and starts the process all over again.* They're far from nice, kind, considerate, compassionate, or empathetic. In fact I would posit that he is actually just the opposite of those. he is calculating, cunning, cruel, and a cold killer of the adorable things. I still love him dearly. For he is just being what he was designed to be. A regulator of overpopulation of small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, or just about anything about half his size or smaller. Cats are one of the most prolific killers in the world, with about 130 known prey that they will seek out, stalk, ambush and kill. I had the unfortunate responsibility of putting a guard donkey down after he protected multiple horses from a large pack of coyotes. He was a good boy, none of the horses had a scratch on them, but his injuries were too bad for him to be saved. A good guard donkey is a force of nature and they should be treated with utmost respect and admiration because they will absolutely give their lives to protect their herd.

I’m realizing what an injustice it is to have named these smart creatures “donkeys”
Dude, that's just what they are called. Any insults were named after the animal not the other way around. The closest theory to the origin of the word "donkey" is that it came from another word meaning dull gray or to fade, as in color. The older term "ass" is also just the name of the animal with all insults coming later.
