  • Card sorting is a research method used by ux designers, information architects and similar professionals to understand how users view, categorize and label content. It is a cheap, quick and useful way to get your users engaged with your product and get valuable feedback fast

You really shouldn't label the groups ahead of the exercise - unless you're doing a "Closed Card Sort". In an "Open Card Sort", you should ask the participants to place the cards into groups that make sense to them and, when they're all done, you ask them to name the groups. Ultimately, you're trying to design a navigation system that aligns with the majority of your users' mental models and where they would go to find things. If you name the groups ahead of time, you're missing out on an important opportunity to learn how your users might name the top-level navigation options or your software application or website. In a Closed Card Sort, you've pre-defined the group names for the participants.
