So happy people are getting the chance to discover this hidden gem of a band. Gåte has been a unique band in the Norwegian music scene since they came on the scene many years ago. So many good songs. This nomination is well deserved!

Dont get me wrong, i love Gåte and i love this song. My fear is that is this something Europe will understand? Remeber that 95% of people voting in Eurovision will see this 1 time and have to deside.
First Norwegian rock/metal Eurovision song in 19 years. First Norwegian Eurovision song in Norwegian in 18 years. My favorite song selected so far this year.
I've been a Gåte fan for 20 years, and I was really excited about them going for the ESC. I suppose, it is kind of at the margins, so I don't know how well it will fare, but it certainly stands out, which counts for a lot in ESC. One thing to note is that Gunnhild, the vocalist has a lot of training. She grew up with folk music, was performing publicly at the age of ten, started Gåte with her brother at the age of 12-13, and met huge success with their first record in 2002. They also gained the respect of the local folk musicians and worked with some of the legends there. I was fortunate to finally make it to one of their last concerts of the first period in 2010. Between that, she went to acting school, had more training. She really knows this stuff. But then, she says, Gåte isn't that. Gåte draws from the pure forces of nature, that they aim to channel through their music. And if you ask me, it is very convincing.
I would be very interested to see how it does in ESC, it’s an interesting one for sure 🥰🥰🥰 thank you for telling me the history of the band and the vocalist. Much love from me 🫶🏼
Yeah it didn't immediately grab me, but it grabbed me enough that I knew I had to listen more. It's a song that grows on you which is one of the best kind.
You are spot on, Folk Metal. We are sending what we know best this year. Also, last year we won, it was with folk music fusion, that time it was Rybak playing Folk-pop, I have full belief in Gåte
I'm Norwegian and from the same part of the country that Gåte come from, and I've seen them live about 20 years ago and it was magical. Gunnhild sings like a Norse goddess. It combines folklore and rock and they are amazing ❤

Hello! Thank you for a great reaction video! New subscriber here. I'm from Sweden and I think this is the one to beat this year. Great vocals first of all and a nice and powerful melody, but this also has the whole package, great overall production, not a dull second anywhere. As a Norwegian I’m so happy we finally sent a song in Norwegian, and a song that perfectly depicts the Norwegian culture but with a modern twist❤ your video was super fun:)
The singing in the beginning of the song is "kulokk", tradditionally to call the cows to you. The text is telling a 1000 year old folklore story about an evil stepmother cursing her stepdaugter to be a wolf alone in the forrest. And the only way she can break the curse is to drink her brothers blood. Heia Norge 🇧🇻
This is very special year for me. Norway compete with a key harp as when they won 1995 with a Swedish artist on the key harp. This year ESC is in Sweden and we send the Norvegian twins compete for Sweden and i love it. I know Norway entry in Malmö we make the audience go completly screaming wild.
It’s actually a very dark story, about death, blood and werewolfs😅 It’s inspired by (and have elements from) a 1000 years old Norwegian folk song used to call at your livestock. Ulveham means werewolf.
@@Janaofficialmusic The original ballad told the story about a girl who has an evil stepmother who turns her into a wolf and curses her to never turn back into a human unless she "drinks her brother's blood". One night the girl who has been turned into a wolf is able to kill the stepmother, which happened to be pregnant with her half-brother (thus drinking her brothers blood and turning human again). The moral of the tale is basically to stand up against evil forces. Not a very well-known folk tale, but quite interesting!
Those screams are the breaking free from the pain and suffering from that evil stepmother. So once understanding the song and the lyrics it gives like two more dimensions
This song is a master winning song in ESC because it is so different than other songs. The instrument is called nøkkelharpe in Norwegian, in english Key Harp. Look out for GÅTE this year in Malmø- Welcome to Oslo 2025.

Enjoyed your reaction video. Gåte is a well established folk rock group in Norway. I understand foreigners think this is very strange. But I think this will do well on the ESC stage. My favorite from Gåte (and Djerv) now, is called Svarteboka. Check out the Official music video. It is more heavy and dark metal. (Great for metal fans at least).
I’ve been a huge fan of Gåte for about twenty years, so I’m possibly slightly biased - but I absolutely adore this song, and I think it will do very well at Eurovision. It’s quite similar in feel and background to the Ukrainian entry _Шум_ (from 2019, I think it was?), which came second. That one was electronic instead of rock, but I see them as very similar entries.
@@Janaofficialmusic They are! They became a band in 1999, and got really popular in the early 2000s, with songs like "Bendik og Årolilja" and "Sjå attende". In 2006 they went on a long hiatus, briefly reuniting in 2009/2010, but only properly coming back in 2017. Which is around the time I discovered them. @@sugarinmywounds They did a small club tour in Germany in 2005, where I saw them in Cologne, and they also played at the Nordic Roots festival in the US the same year, thus if Gunnhild (who was just 20 years old then) hadn't decided she wanted to try something different and become an actress, I think they would have set out for an international career back then. Here in Germany, there are some bands mixing medieval music with Metal and they are doing quite well, so I'd say there's definitely a market for the music Gåte play. In spite of being German, those German bands don't do much for me, whereas I absolutely love Gåte! Gåte sound much rawer/more untamed and darker than those German bands and Gunnhild is one of my favourite vocalists. For the same reasons, I also like the Norwegian band Bergtatt very much, which is the band of the guy playing nøkkelharpe (English: keyed fiddle) with Gåte in their MGP-performance.

5:37 Yeah, that's not the message at all. It's a story about a family conflict. The main character of the story is a young woman, her father marries someone who isn't her mother (presumably he's a widow), and her stepmum is horrible and uses magic to turn her into all sort of things (it's a fairytale from the time when we where still Catholics). In the end she casts a curse making her a wolf and a outlaw till she can taste her brothers blood (she doesn't have a brother), then her stepmum gets pregnant, and after attacking her and tasting her beothers blood inside her stepmoms womb her curse is lifted. Something along those lines. I haven't ever heard the original story, just the retold versions in comment fields about this song.
They Are singing a song from 1000 years ago. So you Are right on The spot. They sing about something that Hollywood would eat alive. A young maiden being shunned and captured in a Wolf skin, her stepmorher hates her, therefore The shun, tries to show of The needles and stiches to The king. Fails. Meets her stepbrother and drinks his blood and no more evil stepmother. So maybe a nordic take on Cinderella. You know, We like it dark 😉
The story exists in different versions in the Nordic countries, as such old stories often do. Presumably it also has relatives outside the Nordic countries. I have seen it claimed that this story (possibly in a related variation) is actually the origin of Cinderella. Such ancient stories were usually far bloodier than their current remains.
@@Janaofficialmusic I can confirm that they are an excellent live band, since I attended their concert in Oslo in October last year (and have also seen them live 3 times before). If you want to hear what they do sound live, I recommend to check out the live videoclips of "Rideboll & Gullborg" and "Knut liten" on their official youtube-channel and/or the liveclip of "Margit Hjukse" on the YT-channel Den Norske Kanon.
Hi. The "å" is pronounced as the "oa" in "boar" or "oar". But you figured out that yourself😊 And Gåte literally means "Riddle". And finally we send a good entry to the eurovision. I saw this bandnlive back in 2001-2002ish. All we talked about was the fact that the singer wasn't really old enough to enter the venue😂
I don't know if I'd call it "metal guitars", but yeah it's a good song with some good rock elements! But hey, let me know if you're checking out some actual metal music as well. Would be fun to hear a reaction to something Lorna Shore or Slaughter to Prevail, though Spiritbox may be a better entry level lol
Keiino would finish higher than this for sure, but this will still be top 15. Norway picked their traditional song rather than something that is really good for ESC 😐
I guess it was important for Norway to showcase their culture and language this year, I’m quite happy to see the diversity but it would be interesting to see how Europe reacts to it 🫶🏼
Can’t wait for his to flop. Almost any other song in the final would do better at ESC, but instead norway wanted to be different and send theirs screaming screeching mess of a song that isn’t even original.
This got the 2nd most votes from the jury, and the most amount of votes from the people? so its clear that people enjoy it. If all you care about in mgp is sending songs that will get recieved well and gain a high amount of votes, you are watching it for the wrong reasons. And like, this was the most original song in the norwegian contest, probaly in the entire mgp this year.
No song is everybody's taste. If Norwegian folk music combined with rock that includes a lot of history and deeper meaning isn't your taste, I'll bet there will be a lot of songs you have heard 100 times before in better versions you can vote for.

Gåte can definitely play their instruments live, but they are not doing it here as it's against the MGP and ESC rules (for logistical reasons).
Whaaaaaat??? They didn’t play it live??😩😩😩😩😩
@@Janaofficialmusic Only vocals are live. Imagine how long the soundchecks would be if every 37 countries played live instruments on the stage.
You’re actually so right here. But it sounded like they pre recorded live performance track and then played it in the background. 🫶🏼 it felt very real
Ohh awesome!! Thank you so much. I will check it out 🥰🥰
Hi.
The "å" is pronounced as the "oa" in "boar" or "oar". But you figured out that yourself😊
And Gåte literally means "Riddle".
And finally we send a good entry to the eurovision. I saw this bandnlive back in 2001-2002ish. All we talked about was the fact that the singer wasn't really old enough to enter the venue😂
Or "hall ", "ball" , "all" etc.
I love the reaction! Did you see Gåte new video for Ulveham that they released yesterday? It's is incredible! Can you please react to it too?? ❤️
I call this Viking folk rock. / Valkyrie Rock
did you know that what is a medieval ballad?
Gåte is pronounced «Gaw-teh»! 😊
Got you!🥰🥰
Don't talk over the chorus. Just enjoy!
Hi i am norweagian, but i liked keiino better
Keiino this year sounded like generic electro pop.
Gåte is better musically.
Keiino would finish higher than this for sure, but this will still be top 15. Norway picked their traditional song rather than something that is really good for ESC 😐
I know ESC loves their europop, but I'm happy that we Norwegians opted for what I consider to be the better song.
I guess it was important for Norway to showcase their culture and language this year, I’m quite happy to see the diversity but it would be interesting to see how Europe reacts to it 🫶🏼
If Gåte did not win I would prefer the Robot song over Keiino's song.
It was a more authentic attempt at the genre, and catchier to boot.
No Gåte is better the Keiino
Why does everyone like keiino's song so much? It's so bland and annoying. Gåte's song is a masterpiece. You can keep all the other eurotrash imo
And like, this was the most original song in the norwegian contest, probaly in the entire mgp this year.
how is it not original?
No song is everybody's taste. If Norwegian folk music combined with rock that includes a lot of history and deeper meaning isn't your taste, I'll bet there will be a lot of songs you have heard 100 times before in better versions you can vote for.
I have a feeling you'll have to wait forever
Your comment will age like bad milk. Mark my words in May.
