The education, learning the history and understanding the evolution and the foundations of Salsa are very important. This video is an awesome contribution. Thank You la Epoca! From Dr. Roland, aka Dr. Salsa (Salsa Concept, Thailand)

I love this video and look forward to seeing it on the website to see the unedited verson. I love La Epoca videos. I share them for my friends because I love to study the culture of dance and have the same thoughts as some of my old friends like Frankie Martinez.

I love your films! This is what I was looking for, a background to the dance I want to learn. I stumbled along La Epoca Films when I searched "salsa vs. mambo"

I have played bass in salsa bands in the 50’s through the 70’s. I still love it. I beg to differ about the clave. The melody definitely does determine ne the clave!

its very interesting because todays dancers have some what improve the salsa dancing they seem to dance every song in the say way with no clave or nothing you & your partner must be one for example when ana mazacote was dancing with jarou & the was ana caote or something to that nature this was in 2004 or 5 they had the perfect chemistry just one osf those days when everything comes together i been a dancer for many many years & did not learn with this 1.2.3 most it we used to practice it with our girl friends or hanging out in the part or the apartment but most importantly you must feel the rythem & know that every song has a different rythem the turns must be well execute & everything must fall in place & know that you are.

The god father of salsa as it was later developed was Arsenio Rodriguez. At 16 years old I used to stand by the bongo player at the Palladium ...1950. We only spoke with our eyes.

Intellectualizing, Afro Cuban rhythm,as you see in this video , it's sound, well, good.Talking and actually, showing are two difference things. There is a saying La Clave is internalized.{Se lleva en el corazon} . In Cuba, all this rhetoric, is immaterial. unless , one wants to impress. If you want to learn, how to dance, learn how to play conga or the Seven "Clave" patterns.Example,Guaguanco, with, what is La "Diana" la guagua,el quinto, tres do ect. La Clave is of Rumba.En El Son es La Clave de Son..In el Chagui,The Rhythm,is also different...To teach or learn, Afro Cuban music go to Havana or Matanza. where you acquire rhythm patterns 6/8,4/4,2/4 ect.You follow El Seco,or el tapao, once you follow, La Marcha, of the congas, you would be dancing in clave! Monforivale pa' el Tambo...Ache

If you reconize that this music, dance and moviment was created fundamentaly in cuba or by cubans musicians and dancers, why did you not interview any cuban dancer or instructor too ? Nothing against all the profesionals in that movie, but i don't undertand that, it is a great film, but i sugest that you think about it, cause is not a good thing put the cubans out of all this, cause they are to much important on the "salsa" universe and they deserve to be valued. Kisses from Brazil.

Rule #1: no part of the melody can conflict with the clave. Rule #2: some part of the melody must compliment the clave. There are basically four salsa claves: son and rumba. Each of these has 2-3 and 3-2 variations. If you are tapping out a clave while singing a melody, one one the clave rhythms will feel correct. If not, you have no sense of salsa!

  • @fijimorgan

Sorry man but I have to disagree with you when you say, “melody has no bearing on clave.” Rebeca Mauleon would disagree with you too. Melody directly determines clave. If melody didn’t dictate clave then you could write whatever you wanted to out of clave and it would work. But it doesn’t. Melody first then clave and rhythm fit around that. Now it is true that once clave is established (in the melody) it doesn’t change.

Yes, blah, blah, blah, but apart from talking for 25 minutes how importsnt it is tounderstand music, there's nounderstanding delivered in this video. If you want to know something for realz search for the jazzman's explanation of latin jazz. But stil you won't get it if you are not a musician :)
