Greetings from Wisconsin, USA! I stumbled onto the canals and narrowboats of the UK by accident and have been smitten ever since. I never new the UK had such a system of canals. I live along the mighty Mississippi River and spent many weekends camping out on houseboats or sandbars as a kid. I really enjoy your videos and find them quite relaxing as they take me back to that special time. You must be proud of Alex. He has a great voice and is very entertaining. You need to bring him aboard more often as he was a pro at handling the locks and lift bridges... a.k.a... less work for you two, LOL! I wish you safe travels and more pleasant memories!
Thank you so much! We are glad you found us in our little floating home in the UK! Our daughter actually lives in WI. She moved there for work after we left TX! Love that we are bringing back some lovely memories for you. You’re right, it is good having Alex aboard and he adds another level of entertainment to the vlogs for sure! He has found his perfect job as a cruise ship entertainer, and he often visits between contracts. You’ll see him a few more times in our most recent vlogs 😊
Alex is a great entertainer, a good musician with a strong voice. Looked as if he's driven a narrow boat before. That was some nice photography around the aqueduct, plus splendid views. All in all, a lovely video.
Thank you so much Lionel and Mary. I will pass your lovely comments on to Alex. He has been on a narrowboat holiday before we got our boat so has a little experience! He’s currently living his dream on a much bigger boat as a performer on a cruise ship! Happy new year to you both 😊🎉
Thank you so much! I will pass your lovely comments on to Alex. Yes, he has been singing for a long time now. He sang with the Houston Children’s Chorus and then he was a St. Paul’s Choral Scholar in downtown Houston, so he’s had a lot of classical voice training too, and now has a musical theatre degree and working as a performer on cruises ships, living his dream 😊
"have you looked down yet, Alex, have you looked down that side?" ZOUNDS! Holy shit! My apologies for the language, but oh my gosh! That wall holding the water (and your boat) isn't even 12 inches wide! Oh my nerves! And yet, what a gorgeous view ... and super video editing and drone footage. What a grand cruise ... and what a spectacular birthday trip!! 🙂
Thanks so much Ann, glad you enjoyed it virtually from the safety of your soda! It was a wonderful trip for Alex’s birthday. And the weather was just perfect. The amazing views totally make up for the fear when you first start crossing. To be honest, I felt more scared walking across than I did on the boat. We will be making that same trip in a few weeks and can’t wait! 😊
It really was so stunning Liz! We are actually on our way there again in the next few weeks. It was one of our most favourite cruising days. I'll pass on your praise to Alex 😊🎶
Absolutely love your Vlog. Have travelled the Llangollen Canal a few times including this year. If you see a leather cowboy hat floating in the thermals at the Aqueduct please wave and smile, it was taken from me by the wind on my crossing. You have such a peaceful approach to your travels, please keep them coming and i hope to meet you on the system in the future. Bless you both.
That’s so lovely to hear. Comments like yours really do make our day! We will keep an eye out for your hat 😂. In an upcoming vlog you will see what happened when we crossed over the aqueduct again in not so perfect conditions 😳
Thank you. That was lovely to see, especially as we have just done the tunnels and aqueducts today. It was reassuring to see that you suffered the 'crabbing' through the tunnels as well.
Glad you enjoyed it, we always find it lovely to watch places we have been too, and even better for you when you just did it that day! Isn’t it such a stunning journey. I’m not sure we can ever top it! That crabbing is hard isn’t it, but Alex holding the rope really did help quite a bit. Enjoy your time on the beautiful Llangollen 😊
Thanks for your honesty, and lovely comments. We know the music is not for everyone, and some prefer just the sounds of nature or the chug of an engine, but that's what we love about the many narrowboat vlogs there are on RUclips, there really is something for everyone! Thanks for giving us a try 😊
I remember doing this trip with my parents on their 62ft semi trad. Pretty sure I was brought along for the lift bridge duties but the aqueduct is breath taking. Feels like such a thin piece of iron between the boat and that huge drop. I’d forgotten about the flow of the river being against you when you are coming through those tunnels. Cup of tea and a sausage sarnie was the order of the day for the ‘staff’. Lovely video and brought back some lovely memories. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, and especially that it brought back some lovely memories! And it definitely helps to have an extra person on board that you can persuade to do the lift bridges 😂
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Alex is living his dream now, singing and dancing and seeing the world as a performer on a cruise ship, slightly bigger than our little boat 😂😊
Beautiful video, good to see Alex. Seems to have his fathers good looks and strength, yet his mothers kindness and wisdom. With that kind of proper upbringing, he will do very well in life ! Cheers from Ohio, USA!
Great video! You’ll have to get Alex to sing your theme tune ‘One Day More’ and have it as your intro! 😃 Your videos are bringing back some lovely memories of our time last year on the Llangollen! xx ❤
Great idea!! He said he is going to work on new updated intro music! So many lovely memories aren’t there. Not sure we can ever top that winter but we can try 😍😊
Thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying them. We often had to remind Alex to use his ‘indoor voice’ but would be entertained by his singing in the shower concerts! He’s now living his dream as a performer on a cruise ship, so he gets paid to do what he loves and see the world 😊
great viewing guys love your work...............photo photos are brilliant...............and the lovely word saying you are now back in England.....great singing love it.....thank you...
Absolutely loved this vlog. I’ve been feeling a bit fed up lately but this has made me smile today and now can’t wait to go over that aqueduct myself and down to the basin. Great to see Alex enjoying himself and loved his singing and guitar playing. Xx
Not sure who is more adorable: Poppy, Alex or Hamish. What a BEAUTIFUL cruise in what has to be some of the most gorgeous scenery anywhere. Those aqueducts take my breath away every time I see them. How nice that you gave Alex that experience on his birthday. I guessed that was his music from the very beginning of the vlog... and what a nice voice. Does he think about moving to the UK? All in all, I can't thank you enough for this particular vlog.
Our pleasure Leigh and thank you for your wonderful comments! The aqueducts are just stunning, and even more remarkable when you think of how old they are and the lack of technology used to build them! Alex actually came back to the UK for a few months to audition in London (he has a Musical Theatre degree) and then landed his dream job as one of the lead singers in the production cast on a cruise ship! He’s getting paid to do what he loves and travel the world, so he’s another one of our family living on a boat, just a little bigger than ours 😂
Really enjoyed this episode which was a great insight into your everyday life! Also watching and listening to Alex sing and play. Fun! And the part about Chirk aqueduct, which kinda reminded me of a place we shot our music video here in Russia on a 100 year old l abandoned railroad bridge. Its there on my channel and its called “Comet” in case you ever want to see. Stay warm in winter! - Roman 😊
I came across your video again! Happy birthday to your son! What a wonderful birthday gift for him and you! Photography was excellent! Many thanks from Mississippi
19:05 I know this is an older video, but I was just watching it again and I noticed the rather large plume of smoke ahead of you. I wonder what that was 🤔 it looks like a bit too much to be a steam engine doing it’s thing 🚂 Thanks for sharing all of your lovely videos. Keep warm. 🙂🐿️🌈❤️ [sydney australia]
This is one of my most favourite videos of ours, so your comment got me watching it all over again! That was the steam from the steam engine. We were sad not to time it perfectly to get ourselves going over the aqueduct and the steam train going over the viaduct at the same time. How amazing that would have been! We will be in the area agin very soon, so will check the timetables more carefully and try and make it happen this year 😊
Another great vlog Caroline on one of probably the most scenic bits of canal it was only just second best to actually doing it and your son added interest with his talent. We are on our boat in a marina for a few days so you have wetted our appetite for travel when the weather gets a bit better. Ruth and David
Thanks so much David and Ruth! It was so lovely having Alex aboard for such a special trip, and we had a fab night in the pub at Trevor Basin with Heidi and Nikki for his birthday! We can't wait to return to the beautiful Llangollen 😊
Puppies - singing Alex - aqueduct - tunnels - very nice video. thank you. Warm day here - 50F and mid 55's this weekend. Then a sudden cold front / artic air and high of maybe 30 with low of 10 coming up. So no boating for us anytime soon. Hoping for another video - but if not - Merry Christmas to your family from your Midwestern friends. Take care - God Bless.
Glad you enjoyed it! I loved editing this one and reliving the lovely memories. Working on another video to get out before Christmas, perhaps even two! Stay warm 😊
The minute you got into Wales, you turned around and fled back to England. This puzzled me. I was wanting to add Llangollen to the very long list of places in Wales I've never been to. You could have painted the town red.
We will be heading to Llangollen for that final stretch of canal and the beautiful Llangollen basin in an upcoming video. We were limited to an out and back trip from Ellesmere as we only had a couple of days with our son on board. When you have visitors you have the added complication of where to pick them up and drop them off and where the car is, so an out and back trip is the easiest. Thanks for watching 😊
That’s great feedback! We felt really uncomfortable being on camera and chatting in our early videos, but have got a little better at it. It was good have our son Alex on board, as his happy chatty self! Do you watch Narrowboat Life Unlocked and Floating Our Boat? They have lots of lovely natural chatting and were two of the channels we enjoyed watching when we were planning this new life aboard. Thanks for watching 😊
There’s a lot of vloggers up on the Llangollen this year, just like last year. It’s such a beautiful canal to spend winter that I’m not surprised it attracts so many of us 😊
Yes, Alex went to the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University in St Louis! We took many road trips from Houston up through AK and MO to visit and see him in shows! Thanks to watching 😊
I have discovered your channel and a few others about the narrow boats and canals. Fascinating, really! I enjoy these off-season/winter videos. Gives a different perspective. Does the slow pace of life on the canals change in the summer with much more activities? I’m wondering if kayaks can be used on the canal.
Welcome aboard, we are glad you found us! Summer is still somewhat of a slow pace, although it’s busier with boat traffic, with rental boaters on holiday, and boat owners who come out in the spring and summer months. With the 2,000 miles of canal network there are still places to moor in the middle of nowhere, with hardly another boat in sight. It does get a lot busier on popular stretches by towns, where you’re hoping that there will be a free mooring space when you get there after a long day’s cruising! The cruise in this video from Ellesmere to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is very busy in the height of the summer season from what we’ve been told, and photos we’ve seen, with boats queuing to cross the aqueducts and through the Chirk Tunnel, and crossing nose to tail with a line of other boats! A bit different to our experience in winter when we had the aqueduct to ourselves! You do see quite a lot of kayaks and canoes in the canals, and you’ll see them in some of our videos. There are actually organised canoe rental trips that take people paddling over the aqueduct! 😊
It’s a Russell Narrowboat, they are based in Burton Upon Trent. Here’s the link to one of our early videos when we discuss our virtual build process and all of our design decisions ruclips.net/video/F_e0vT9req4/видео.htmlsi=klErTaqTTXiF7DyT
Super vlog. Definitely a talented family - Alex is a fabulous musician….I’m guessing he studied MT or similar? Lovely voice. Wonderful photography - absolutely stunning shots of the architecture and canal. Love the drone work too - it really shows the scale of the aqueduct and the beautiful setting. This must have been around this time last year? I watched blogs from Julie and Martin, Heidi and others back then so I’m looking forward to seeing yours of the same events. 😊💕
Thanks so much! Yes you’re right, Alex has a Musical Theatre degree, but was also a chorister in his high school days. He’s now living the dream as a performer on a cruise ship, doing what he loves and seeing the world! My love is photography, and I’ve really enjoyed pushing myself to learn about videography and editing. Pete is our drone pilot, so it really is a team effort! This was exactly a year ago (to the day). We are very behind for all sorts of reasons, but it’s been wonderful editing and reliving all those wonderful winter memories when we made so many life long friends 😊
Hi Lester & Kerry! Exciting times ahead for you! There are a limited stretches of the northern canals that it’s tight in a 60ft but not impossible so we’ve been told (having your boat on a slight diagonal and removing the bow and stern buttons/fenders) but we are not sure we want to try that theory! There are so many more miles we can travel travel without that worry! There’s a map on Rugby Boats that shows you the canal accessibility by boat length here rugbyboats.co.uk/lock-sizes/ 👍
I removed it from this winter series and it was like having two introductions and I thought a little over the top perhaps! It will be back. Alex has said he is going to work on an updated version 😊
Sorry it’s not for you, but we get lots of lovely comments about our music choices on our videos. Just goes to show that everyone has different tastes doesn’t it. Thanks for watching 😊

In a world that moves much too fast it’s soothing to see swans on the water, sun on a field and a pup in a pink jacket. Peace and Happy Christmas.
It really is such a peaceful (mostly) slow paced life. Thanks for watching 😊
Alex is a great entertainer, a good musician with a strong voice. Looked as if he's driven a narrow boat before. That was some nice photography around the aqueduct, plus splendid views. All in all, a lovely video.

Fab drone shots over the aquaduct. Nice to meet Alex.
Glad you enjoyed it! It was definitely a memorable birthday for Alex 😊
Darling son! And so talented! I see a guitar come out and panic! Usually awful! But your son has a trained voice, theater??? Just a lovely family 👍

@onedaymoreaboard Please do!
Wow, just wow. Really enjoyed this video.
That’s wonderful to hear. That’s made our day 😊
@30:48 The house in the trees was Thomas Telford's house during the construction of the aqueduct.
Wow, thanks for that extra information! We watched again to take a look! We never cease to be amazed by the history surrounding the canal network 😊

Hi Jacquie! Glad you enjoyed it. It was absolutely stunning in the winter, and perfect that it was only us on the aqueduct! 😊

Quick question - am sure you have said in one of the vlogs but I’ve missed it - where did you have the boat built?
It’s a Russell Narrowboat, they are based in Burton Upon Trent. Here’s the link to one of our early videos when we discuss our virtual build process and all of our design decisions ruclips.net/video/F_e0vT9req4/видео.htmlsi=klErTaqTTXiF7DyT
Thank you!!@@onedaymoreaboard
Hi, we looking at getting a narrowboat soon, is there anywhere you can't go in your 60 ft? Cheers Lester and Kerry
Awesome, thankyou
ha ha was that a speed camera van i saw
Ha ha, yes it got us doing 3MPH 😂. Thanks for watching 😊
What length is your craft?
It’s a 60ft boat 👍
Are you not allowed to use the One Day Amore music anymore? I miss it 😢
I removed it from this winter series and it was like having two introductions and I thought a little over the top perhaps! It will be back. Alex has said he is going to work on an updated version 😊
oh that’s great - there’s something so magical about those few notes!
we dont call them herons we renamed them to pterodactyls lol
Ha! That's a great name....they really do look like them! Thanks for watching 😊
You cruse the canals for quiet,,, Why spoil you recording with music,, No thanks spoilt by noise, I'm gone.
Sorry it’s not for you, but we get lots of lovely comments about our music choices on our videos. Just goes to show that everyone has different tastes doesn’t it. Thanks for watching 😊
