Watched you, your family and your channel grow for a few years now..from the garden shed days, its amazing to see where your hard work an passion has got you, and the background support from your wife, family and friends. Great work 💪💪💪
Love the look. Small tip for the power cords on the lights going up to the pipe. Use a hair dryer/heat gun to warm up the plastic coating to make it relax and hang straight. I would place mine in hot water for a minute but it's to late for that.
You and your friend make a great team. I am sure when it is done Katie will like it, but I would have to say you have “tentative” approval. I appreciate your sharing your home build. I think it looks great. Time to crack on.
Keeping it real is part of why we love your channel so much, MD! It's all part of how you show what you do with your tanks, mistakes and all. :) What you built looks absolutely perfect for the space.
lol "you didn't fish" he's looking a little fishermen like lol I like Steph, can tell he's a genuine nice bloke, look forward to more content with him.... maybe a fishing trip lol
I've been a fan of your RUclips channel for a long time and I have to tell you that since its arrival, the quality of your videos, editing and music has been exceptional. Either Stephan does the editing, or the fact that he's collaborating with you allows you to better express your creativity. I just love it.
I wouldn't put the pipe straight up to cover those cables, it will draw attention and possibly mess with how straight your horizontal one is. Just run a vine up the cables, even a fake one, it will conceal the cables and visually merge with the fern you already have there.
Came to the comments to say this. As soon as the wider shot came on with the windows and curtain poles it jumped out that that is what it should have matched
It blends in with the wood tones & will develop a patina over time - whether that's desired or not, but it will blend in with that dark green, wall color. If it's just silver pieces, then it will stick out like a sore thumb.
glad you get to experience the approval of spouse phase again haha! each time i make a new tank i try to do the entire thing before my fiance comes home from work so that they just see the final product as well.. just remember how much shes grown fond of the tanks in the studio it will happen with this as well im sure!
Am I crazy to have bing watched MD fish tanks videos from last 2 years 😮 watching on how he experiment and build walstad method aquariums. Really loving content. I also struggle and convince my wife to get new tank 😂😂. That's nice UK accent, Thanks mate 😊
Try a hair dryer on the wires , but not to close an in one spot for to long. They just need some heat to smooth them out. I lay my extension cords out in the sun all day tonget the same effect
MD! I am loving all the content , specially the recent African cichlid tanks…. I would really love to see you keep some Thropheus or Pseudotropheus saulosi 😅😊
Howdy from Alberta Canada! just wanted to bring something to your attention, if those cable hanging components are steel and are in contact with the copper it might corrode the components over time, speed depending on humidity and whatnot. and if not then you're all good! the outside of the copper should have a film on it so hopefully it doesn't oxidize and turn green or get all dirty looking. should be fine but just wanted to let you know. Cheers! plumber from AB.
Copper looks really good. I did a similar thing with excess stainless steel extendible curtain rail tubes. Those green scouring pads for dishes are slightly abraisive, if you wet them it gives a better finish, with oil even better and 97% of the copper powder sticks to them, you dont want copper or oil in your tank though. Copper is super bad for invertibrates.
Water pipe is a bit too basement ceiling look, for me, but to each their own. You might consider 1/2ing the down pipe lengthwise and using some decorative clamps so you have easy access to the cords.
Not bad. May I suggest using something like a black ABS pipe. It's plastic, easier to drill through, very durable, and will blend in better with the room.
@MDFishTanks ok, maybe not black, but white PVC pipe will blend with the ceiling. And the pipe could be painted. Copper will oxidize and turn green over a period of time especially with the evaporation coming from the tank.
@MDFishTanks if that's the look you're going for, absolutely!. You gotta keep your wife happy. PS: I've been watching your videos in the USA and learned quite a lot about setting up a planted aquarium. I started my first planted aquarium about 2 months ago and it's thriving. I'm currently working on setting up a 2nd nano tank. I just wanted to say you've been an inspiration and now I'm hooked!
Personally I would have taken the casing off of the lights and drilled a hole more central to run the power leads closer to the suspension cable and also wire wool the piping to knock off the shine. Looks clean otherwise. Looking forward to seeing the scape.
The Skylight was the first thing I showed her as an option....she hated it. Said it looked like a floating box 🤣. This is more in keeping with my channel though. Making things work that you don't have to take out an extra mortgage for but still give a really nice finish.
Something that can be annoying about my aquarium being in my living room is seeing the underside of the light while sitting on the couch, so i had to put it as low as possible so that its mostly hidden by the black plastic frame of the tank. When i saw you were planning to have lights hung like this i had the same thought, they might be quite bright from the couch perspective. I dont know if maybe you could put a small cowling on them to shield the light from being seen without blocking the light from the aquarium
Those screw-in wall anchors have failed on me many times in different applications. I imagine it will be fine in this instance because the lighting won't be handled often. However, toggle anchors are much stronger and more reliable in my experience. Especially when it comes to hanging fixtures from ceilings.
because the hole would need to be big on the underside and look bad. it's not just the wire thickness, it was also the connection to the power block. This was 100% the best and only option with this type of light.
guys..please bare in mind that copper will go green over time with the slightest bit of moisture and that green badness will leech and drip over a short period....stainless everytime..
19:07 Your looking at your progress on the custom lighting, I am mesmerized by the absolute BEAUTY out your back door. Aurora Colorado USA here, a native so I've been here my entire life. Our moistest season is spring and typically we have maybe 10 days the entire year where things are green and the sky is cloudy but calm like you have there. Those days calm my soul, and I absolutely love it. The rest of the spring and summer is brown and dry, windy or scorching direct sun. When clouds form here there is fear, as many times during the summer season marble to ping pong size hail fall from the sky damaging the house and gardens. Then fall, dry but starting to get cold and winter brown and dry unless it decides to snow... like today, the high today is 10F (-12c), low expected to be -12F (-24c) tonight. Forecast says this will be around for the next 5-7 days. I guess what I am saying is that your custom light is coming along beautifully but for me the real beauty in this clip is something you see so often you have no idea how lucky you are.
I'm always leery of (large) tanks in the middle of the floor because of their extreme weight. Is your floor suspended, or (hopefully) ,or is it on solid ground?

I love the drive for marital consensus over this series. I know this well. Also, your home is beautiful.
I think a lot of us can relate to this 😁
100% glad I'm single

the quality of filming and editing really made a jump the last weeks. flow of the video is amazing. had to point that out
Thanks, I love editing and now I just have more to work with which means I can tell the story a lot better.
Perfect. Chaos (MD) and Order (Kate), part of what makes the world go.
We are yin and yang. slot together perfectly to make an infinite circle.
Yeah, but from my experience in relationships. Kate is more than likely delt with this more than once from MD.
Loving this series so far!
Thank you. It's about to get even better in the next episode!!!!

@MDFishTanks you can heat the black wires with a hair dryer and they will go straight again

I feel like Kate's happy with it, is a relative term. 😂 Looks great. Can't wait to see what you go with

Kate definately wears the trousers 😉 Happy wife ,happy life 🤣
You have some curtain rods on your window you should get one more then they would match and that would make it pop
That was my first idea, but we felt it would be a bit much and wanted it as stand alone for the Aquarium.
Came to the comments to say this. As soon as the wider shot came on with the windows and curtain poles it jumped out that that is what it should have matched

You could paint those black wires connecting the lights white to make them stand out less.

I think that was a solid 60% approval factor
Ha yes! I was mad when you posted the picture of the first video yesterday and not the second build video! Haha yaaayyyy thank you!

you could run up some money plant veins up the wires and the rod....would look cool
oh its coming......
Hello from Arizona 🌵love watching your videos. I watch everyone, they are so inspiring
I like the backyard
Looking good.
I'm not sure 'crack on' is the best phrase to use while you are hanging lights above a GLASS aquarium! :)
Put a large indoor tree or some emergent plants on the side with the cables
Hahaha Kate doesn't look happy / convinced yet. You pass the reality show vibe. Can we get more of this type of videos? hahaha
Maybe a skylight hyperspot would be a option? It looks stylish and a very good light. But it looks good like this aswell well done
If you wish to speed up the copper aging process, you could spray it a bit with salt water.
Kate drives a hard bargain 😆
You could have used a curtain pole that already matches those in the room.
Yeah that was my first thought. We felt it would took too much like a curtain pole (which it is lol) and wanted a stand alone piece.
MD! I am loving all the content , specially the recent African cichlid tanks…. I would really love to see you keep some Thropheus or Pseudotropheus saulosi 😅😊
100% interested in both of those. Will get planning.

Great video as always
Not bad. May I suggest using something like a black ABS pipe. It's plastic, easier to drill through, very durable, and will blend in better with the room.
there is zero chance of a black pipe hanging from my ceiling 🤣

you need to get the skylight hyperspot the best looking aquascaping light
agreed, but definitely doesn't fit the aesthetic of the living room (was the first light I showed Kate as an option).
Its originall, but i would use skylight hyperspot light with sheir aluminim frame, which looks very good. The wiring hide in tube is great idea.
The Skylight was the first thing I showed her as an option....she hated it. Said it looked like a floating box 🤣. This is more in keeping with my channel though. Making things work that you don't have to take out an extra mortgage for but still give a really nice finish.
Hello sailor.
I dont know if maybe you could put a small cowling on them to shield the light from being seen without blocking the light from the aquarium
love your videos!
I would of used a gold curtain pole to match the rest .
You should have just got an electronion in and they could have ran the power in the ceiling.
Is anybody else even just a little bit concerned about the proximity of the cat tree to the aquarium?....lol...wouldn't take much of a leap for kitty
Those screw-in wall anchors have failed on me many times in different applications. I imagine it will be fine in this instance because the lighting won't be handled often. However, toggle anchors are much stronger and more reliable in my experience. Especially when it comes to hanging fixtures from ceilings.
I like pole this series. Pole. 😍
drape a ivy or some thing on pole will hide wires
Why have the power cables come out of the top of the pipe? Why not have them come out of holes on the bottom like the hanging cables?
because the hole would need to be big on the underside and look bad. it's not just the wire thickness, it was also the connection to the power block. This was 100% the best and only option with this type of light.

Not to be a downer, but that copper might oxidize, wipe it down with an oil to preserve the shininess
we want it to oxidize. Bit shiny at the minute.
Oxidized copper looks way better 👌 look at green coppee roof. Those look amazing
