  • From "The Fountainhead" to "The Day the Earth Stood Still," Patricia Neal showed early promise as an actress - but her body of work was quickly overshadowed by an affair with the married Gary Cooper, which resulted in a pregnancy, an abortion and a nervous breakdown. She eventually returned Hollywood - now married to children's author Roald Dahl, and revived her film career with starring roles in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "HUD" with Paul Newman. But tragedy was always close at hand - from the death of one of her children, a serious accident to another, and then a devastating stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to work. After years of physical therapy and rehabilitation, she returned once again to the big screen in an Oscar-nominated role in "The Subject Was Roses," but many of us will always remember this Oscar, Tony and Golden Globe winning actress as the original Olivia Walton in the TV movie "The Homecoming." On this episode of "InnerVIEWS with Ernie Manouse," our 2009 conversation with screen legend, Patricia Neal.

She told me one of the most brilliant things I’ve ever heard: “Everything will be okay in the end, dahhhhhling, and if it’s not okay it’s not the end.” RIP, Patricia! You were loved and you are missed ❤️

A wonderful interview. Mr. Manouse knows how to lead with intelligent questions, and then sit back and LISTEN. So many interviewers need to stick their egos in. Very annoying. Mr. Manouse helped me to know Ms. Neal better. He treated her with kindness, gallantry and genuine interest. THANK YOU!!!!!

Can always tell a theater actor/(actress).

She was an incredible actress ‼️

Patricia was born in Kentucky, and grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee. I lived with her aunt, Willa Belle (Neal) Hembree in Knoxville as a student at UTK. Mrs. Hembree often times showed me her silver all marked with "N" for Neal and the paintings and ceramics done by her mother who studied in eastern Europe (Austria I think). Willa Belle studied plan a and taught high school music. She later managed the opening of the business office at TVA. She later had a stroke as well as did Patricia. Willa Belle raised 2 children alone after her husband had gambled away her inherited fortune. Eventually she was mayor of the city. These two women fought thru numerous battles and persevered and accomplished much in life.

She was brilliant in Hud. She only appeared for 22 mins in the film, and she did so much with so little time.
Her Oscar win was well-deserved. Unfortunately, her real life was also as dramatic as the characters she played. This woman never stopped soldiering on.

She was very respectful to Roald Dahl in this interview. Her autobiography tells the real story, though. He was frequently cruel to her
and eventually dumped her for a younger woman, a woman who she considered a dear friend. It was an incredible betrayal.

After the 2008-remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, I was so curios to see the orignal. When I finally found it in 2010, I was amazed by Patricia's talent, and the warmth and care she brought to that movie. Afterwards I found out, that only a few days earlier, Patricia had passed away. May she rest in peace.. I haven't even seen all of her work, but I have no doubts of her being a great actress, not to mention a lovely person. :-)

A very well done interview. as a sci-fi fan, her character Helen Benson in 'Day the Earth Stood Still' was the fore runner for all the intelligent, passionate & compassionate, strong willed, level headed women of all later sci-fi films.
