It is a shame how greedy shopify is. They launch a feature with no way to upload meta fields in bulk without purchasing a third party app so that they could eat up hefty commission for a thing that should be built right into shopify. Absolutely disgusting.
This video is a bit outdated. You can now bulk edit metafields natively using the bulk editor. If you want to export though, you still can't do it natively, you need Matrixify.
It's an interesting point though - would you prefer if Shopify was more expensive but had more included? Or keep it cheaper and you use apps for extras? Personally, I think it's better to keep Shopify as cheap as possible, so people that need those extra features pay for apps, and people who just want basic Shopify don't pay as much.
@@EdCodes Yes. I am aware of the new bulk edit feature. We have 10,000+ products and already have data available in excel sheets. Why would we want to manually edit data. Also bulk edit is irrelevant as we have different values for each items. It would amount to making the data from scratch. The issue is releasing a half baked feature and calling it a day. It is such a basic function that it should exist natively in shopify. That too considering shopify charges monthly fee and many of it compitetors are either free or cheaper. On the other hand earlier we were able to remove variants while bulk editing whereas now if you have for example 5-6 variants for each products you are stuck with the endless scrolling to get to the next product and so on. It's simple things like these that make a huge difference.
@@EdCodesBro, I appreciate your work and learned a huge deal watching some of your videos. My only grudge is that either they should implement a feature that is complete or not implement it at all.
It depends what kind of work you will be doing. If you're going to be freelancing then you still need both. There are plenty of stores (maybe even most) who have not upgraded their themes to 2.0 yet, and to work on those you need to understand the old way. The old way is easier really, 2.0 introduces a bunch of new stuff. IMO just do both at the same time, you will start seeing the difference pretty quickly.
@@multa7053 There are still hundreds of thousands of stores out there that have not updated their themes to 2.0 and will not do so for the next 2-3 years because their current theme is really custom and its a hassle to move to a new theme... So for freelancing as a Shopify dev you still need to know both. For your own store obviously 2.0 is the way.
Great video. I currently use BPE and do like it. One thing I haven’t found out, except for export/importing via CSV is how to edit a list of single lines of text. E.g. removing a keyword from a list. Does any of the other 2 apps allow for that?
Excel or Google Sheets allows for that, using the find and replace feature or using a formula. So you could just do all your editing there if you use Matrixify to export/import.
Hey Ed, just binge watched a few of your videos. Such great stuff. I have a questions about metafields - is there a way to use them to set up product recommendations for a You may Also Like section on the product page? I though I could do that by setting up a reference metafield, but somehow it doesn't show up on the product page. I am wondering whether I understood the reference metafield wrong?
Yeah definitely, you can use a product reference metafield for that but depending on your theme you may or may not have a section or block available to actually display it. Can also be coded with the "custom liquid" block/section of course.
Thanks for making this video, the guide on the bulk edit for Metafields Guru helped a lot.
wow amazing timing. I was just looking for someone to show something like thing and you uploaded this video.
Thank you for this video. I like that Matrixify allows me to export a spreadsheet and give it to an assistant that can edit it offline.
Thank you! This is amazing!
Thank you very much for the informative video.
Thank you!
Hii can you make a video on metafields for pages or collection
Can we use one licence to configure multiple stores ?
Your only aloud 20 metafileds, is there a way to add more?

Will most definitely be joining your monthly private group. I'm starting shopify theme development. Should I start with theme 2.0 or with the old way?
Well, 2.0 is the way to go. Everything not 2.0 is a waste

any way to bulk edit collections?

I have been doing this all within Shopify itself. I guess you just need to know how to use it.
