Surprisingly it’s not rare at all to have songs with hella upbeat music while having dark lyrics. Especially from what I noticed Japanese love doing that.

- baby jesus drowning in snow

- elfs have insomnia

Upbeat songs with dark lyrics are extremely common even in english. A very good example would be "Hey Ya!" by OutKast. It's a song about young people failing to find/keep longlasting and meaningful relationships, then burying themselves in short term pleasures because they can't even begin to address their own emotions. It even has a self aware moment where the song pauses to say "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance" directly to the listener, critiquing them for their own indulgence in short term pleasures instead of pausing to disect the deeper message behind the lyrics.
The music video is literally taking place at a concert. Love that song and its trickery.
And the song "I can't decide", with lyrics like "I could throw you in a lake or feed you poison birthday cake but I can't deny I'm going to miss you when you're gone.".
Detroit rock city by Kiss. A banger of a classic rock song about a guy drunk driving to a concert and dying in a car crash. I know the song is dark ever since I got into Kiss at 10-11, but it's just so catchy and fire, it gets me turnt up every time I hear it.
Similar song, Bullet by Hollywood Undead. Talking about trying to kill yourself with very upbeat music.

One of the two main people in Yaosobi has a background in Vocaloid. A BILLION vocaloid songs are just like that (and known for that), sounding extremely happy, peaceful, or sweet until you hear the meaning. It’s one of my favorite things about it in a way. If I’m sad I can resonate with the meanings, but if I’m just vibing I get to enjoy the more upbeat style music. And the upbeatness of the music helps to cheer me up eventually, even if I know the meaning or am listening to an English cover.
Yeah, and it just hits different when songs are a mix of sadness and happiness
Rolling girl is what I think of...
But weirdly I've always felt like these types of songs aren't *all* happy even tho I don't understand Japanese language, because happy songs in jpop or vocaloid are either calmer, or really in your face happy (electric angel for example)
@@Orangecatenergy No no, I totally understand. Some songs it’s really impossible to disassociate the meaning internally. But like, personally, I can listen to My R and still just enjoy it, even if I know the meaning itself is uhh, sad? But to be fair, I also do that with English songs aha, since I often have to really listen to songs to hear what is said, otherwise I just hear the music and enjoy it.
Vocaloid is so underappreciated. There are so many melodies that would have been considered masterpieces had they been served in a more palatable way to mainstream audience. (Like ussewa and yoru ni kakeru) but then again vocaloids are such an amazing phenomenon. Making songs without having to interact with a human singer may have been the attractive point to many vocaloid-ps

There are quite some happy sounding songs with depressing meanings, not just Japanese.

pumped up kicks is a good example of this in English I think
@@L-sillybrained this song also applies to my saying
There's an English song like this called Bullet I think and it has a different special touch because the whole song is a bright, happy song about committing suicide and it's kinda got the same vibe people who've been suicidal can relate to where you actually commit to the idea and the empty numbness finally fades to a sick sort of relief, I really like how much depth it has
The concept of having incredibly dark depressing songs put into an upbeat tone is one of my favorite types. I feel like its similar to how a lot of people do fake smiles across the day when they feel the complete opposite. It's just one way to express it musically for anyone who relates to doing that type of thing often
As someone who once had a friend show me a happy sounding Hatsune Miku song that was actually about...drinking soup from a stomach (that's all I'll say about the context of the song, if you know you know), the moment I hear any happy sounding song sung in Japanese, I immediately think of that vocaloid song and get goosebumps.

THE FULL STORY (of the song):
In this world, people are governed either by Thanatos or Eros. If one is governed by Eros, they love life and have the will to live. If one is governed by Thanatos, they get a personal grim reaper who tries to make you commit suicide.
In the beginning, it's shown that the girl is someone who is governed by Thanatos while the boy is governed by Eros. He falls in love with the girl and tries to convince her to not commit suicide multiple times. The very first part, she's about to jump off when he stops her.
He then talks about her grim reaper who the girl looks at longingly and lovingly and he isn't happy with it and is jealous. Here, the boy gets tired of always stopping her from committing suicide and realizes his words are never going to get through to her. One day, he says "I want it all to end" (終わりにしたい) and for the first time, the girl smiles. They then commit suicide together, but it turns out that the girl was his personal grim reaper this whole time and it was him who was governed by Thanatos. And he dies. The end.

I feel that songs like this are very appropriate for Japanese people, who smile to avoid showing their weakness to others even when they are under stress. The song, released on the 15th of December 2019, was inspired by a short story "The Seduction of Thanet" written by Mayo Hoshino. Ikura of YOASOBI told Billboard, "I wanted to maintain the mood of the original work, so I kept my vocals neutral, to blend in with the color of the track. I tried to convey the emotion of the protagonist with my voice." The animated video for the song was published on the 16th of November 2019.

Although since I’m Japanese and understood the lyrics the whole time - I still vibe with it 🤩
Couple months ago I read up about the racing into the night song which is the one about depression
Basically, the stories about this girl who kept trying to unalive herself by jumping off a cliff because she has something called the Thanatos disease, but this guy tried to save her, and soon fell in love with her, but she continued to try to jump off the cliff, so it happened so many times that he jumped off with her, but the thing was, she was never even a real human. She was his Grim Reaper ,and he was the actual one who had the disease that’s why he was able to see her.
I love these songs- When I started to learn Japanese and listen to some of the songs I liked from PinocchioP and recognize a few words I didn't realize quite a few of them have some pretty dark lyrics-

I’ve come to expect this at least from YASOBI, because the song “IDOL”(AKA, the Oshi No Ko theme song) was also very popular and sounded upbeat but is literally about deceiving people in the hopes it’ll make them happy (in the context of being a famous singer)
Damn he got done dirty.
That’s not really deceitful. There are plenty of songs in English with a happy beat that discuss sad subjects. You only consider it deceitful because you didn’t look at the lyrics, and that isn’t Yoasobi’s fault. It’s a fantastic story. Also, I’m the short story that the song is based off of, the girlfriend isn’t necessarily a grim reaper, she hears death calling and she asks if he’d like to go with her. It’s bittersweet. It’s also good to talk about sad stuff. By burying the subject, people are less aware of the impact that things like suicide have on everyone around them. Also, by not discussing it, people think that it’s shameful to discuss those feelings with other people.
they didn't mean it in a bad way, it's actually interesting how you might think the song is hapy because you can't understand the lyrics
@@ElizabethAftonAndTheIceCream it’s interesting, but only requires a 10 second google search. It’s also super common for people with depression to act over the top happy. I just think it’s weird for someone to look at a song in a language they don’t understand and then claim it’s deceitful simply because they don’t understand they language the song is in. If you knew Japanese, it would be plain as day.
Context: There’s a girl who attempts suicide but is saved by a boy and it turns into a love relationship just like love at first sight. The boy asks the girl why she wants to die and she says she has thanatos illness. Basically people ruled by thanatos want death and those ruled by eros desire life and have will to live. People with thanatos can see the grim reaper. Since the girl is ruled by thanatos, the grim reaper is calling out to her and the boy gets jealous. She tries to attempt suicide again and it looks like she is just waiting for the boy to come and save her again. After a while she says no more so they break up now the boy does’nt want to live either. Now it flashes to where they both are at a rooftop and the girl finally smiles (both ready to jump off) they both jumped off happily and the boy died… the girl did’nt because she never existed. The boy was the one with thanatos the whole time and the girl was his grim reaper.

You and me, skies above and wide, it brings on the true night on me
All I could feel was a goodbye
Those only words you wrote, it's plenty to understand ya
The sun is going down, the sky behind and visions of you would stand
Overlapping with you and the fence beyond
Remember the night that we met up?
Broke into me and taken everything left in my heart
So fragile is the air, it always keeps on revolving near and wide
Loneliness envelops deep in your eyes
It's stuck in tick and tocking mode
Never refraining shamble, block of sound
Too many terrible noises around and the voice ringing in me gets louder
With tears about to fall
I need to find me an average happy tiptoe
Locating, never tough when I'm with you
Saw what got seen hid beneath, and louder nights keep beating
I'm going to you, and giving brighter shiny tomorrows
What can night for you mean infinite? You could run with me
Place your hand in mine, you gotta stay, hold up
Want to leave it behind, dark cruel days, in deep, you may have hid before
I'm embracing you until more heat dissolve what is caught up
Sun will soon rise up into a day you're no more too afraid
Keep all of me in you
Only perceiving through your eyes
I see nothing, I'll soon hate you, keep me out, I'm crying out
You're falling into deeper fascination, giving away your love
That expression has got me crying out
She's gonna try to me, she's gonna lie
Got to force a belief and trust to keep on
Every time it happens, heap of attack, and now I'm back in
I got to cry, then who knows?
So we gotta keep on
If you gotta keep on
Then we're gonna keep on
One day, we will understand, I'm believing in you
No, wanna stop it, you got me tired of walking
As I show my needs, I reach to get back on, still not fit in
You free my hand, then leave it
No, wanna stop it, you got me tired of walking
Never told you the truth, I'm feeling that inside
Back for another tick and tocking mode
Never refraining shamble, block of sound
Killing, oh, too many words that I gathered around
Won't let me go to your mind
"I want it to be done" is what went out
It found a way to finally leak out of me
And for once, I could make you let out a smile
Saw what got seen hid beneath, and louder nights are keeping me down
My new images of you now appear heavenly now
What can night for you mean when fallen seas of tears are gone?
They dissolve into the peace inside of you
Calling to life, hit beneath, crying days in the eternal
Give me what I saw in you, oh, what an end to stop all
Seize a move, you're on me, falling and we were dissolving
See me to it, fog is leaving, bright air move
Won't you leave it behind? Tucked all days away, forget, and hid beneath
Hand in hand, extend to me, that let me know beyond falls
Through the seas of beyond, so loud and blows you afloat in the sky
New wind moving into you
Tonight, don't ever lose sight of me and let go
You and me are running through the night in dark, I'll take you
This song gave me the same vibe as the song cannibal by Kesha lol cuz even though the meaning is dark people were dancing on it 💀
(this is the full story behind this song) Be careful when your ideal person shows up out of the blue.
August 15. Even though the sun had set a long time ago, humid air continued to linger on in the surroundings. Sweat gushed out endlessly from my body as I dashed up the stairs of the apartment building.
“Goodbye.”
Her LINE message contained just this word.
I immediately understood what that meant.
I had been working throughout Obon.1 Right after completing the preparations for returning home, I had hurriedly headed for the apartment building where I lived.
And it was on the roof, outside the fence, where I found her standing with a vacant look in her eyes.
The truth is, this was the fourth time I had seen her attempting to take her life by jumping.
It is said that there are two kinds of people in this world.
Humans who are inclined towards life - governed by “Eros”;
And humans who are inclined towards death - governed by “Thanatos”.
Most people belong to the former, yet she was unmistakably of the latter kind.
That she was a human being governed by “Thanatos” was something I had known even before I began dating her.
After all, the reason for our first encounter was because I had tried to save her from attempting suicide on the roof of the apartment building, just like what was happening now.
She was a girl who had just moved into the same apartment building. With her round eyes and full lips, she possessed a lovely set of facial features yet had a delicate expression on her face. She stole my heart in an instant. Surely, it must have been love at first sight.
From that moment on, we chatted about various topics and became good friends very quickly. For me, who had been working at a black company2 and living my life in solitude, she was like an angel who had descended from the heavens.
Except, I had one doubt.
Each time she had planned to take her life, she would contact me without fail. And she would wait there until I arrived.
I thought it would be better to die alone without telling anyone, but perhaps, somewhere in her heart, she wished for me to stop her from committing suicide and help her, like I did the first time we had met. I simply took this as an explanation for her actions.
And that’s why I rushed up the stairs of the apartment building this time as well.
“Haa, haa…”
I reached the roof of the apartment building.
I found her standing on the opposite side of the fence, with her back towards me.
“Wait…!!”
I jumped over the fence and took hold of her hand.
It was cold, contrary to the humid weather.
“Let go.”
Akin to the ringing of bells, her voice was fleeting and sweet. I loved her voice too.
“Why are you doing this…!”
“I want to die, quickly.”
“Why…!”
“Because the god of death is calling for me.”
She could see the ‘god of death’. This was said to be a rare symptom amongst those who were governed by “Thanatos”.
And apart from them, no one else could see this ‘god of death’.
“There’s no such thing as the god of death.”
“Why won’t you understand…!”
When I deny the existence of a god of death, she would definitely scream and shout.
It seems that to those who can see it, the god of death is most attractive. It resembles their ideal person, so to speak.
Whenever she was gazing at the god of death (although for me, I don’t see anything else besides an empty space), her expression was always that of a maiden in love. It was as if she had completely lost her heart to it.
I hated that kind of expression on her face.
“Don’t look at the god of death or whatever, look at me.”
“No…!”
Since she tried to shake my hand off, I ended up holding hers even harder without thinking.
“It hurts…!”
“! Sorry…”
But, isn’t this your fault? Because you were trying to shake my hand off. Because you wouldn’t look at me instead.
“The god of death wouldn’t do such a thing…!”
The darkness in my heart surged forth.
“Why…”
Why is it that even though I love you so much, you would not even spare me a glance?
Somewhere in my heart, I thought it was ridiculous to feel jealousy towards a god of death, but even that could not bother me anymore.
“I’m sick of this.”
I’m sick of this too.
“I’m tired.”
I’m tired too.
“I want to die quickly.”
“I want to die too!!”
At that point, she lifted her head.
She was grinning broadly at me.
As soon as I saw her smiling face, I felt the darkness in my heart dissipate in an instant.
Wait, could it be that?
“Did you finally… realise?”
“Yeah… I finally understood.”
“Really…? That’s great.”
Ah, I see.
The reason you called me each time you planned to commit suicide was not because you wanted my help.
It was because you wanted to bring me along with you.
To me, she was the ‘god of death’.
A cool breeze blew past. Before I knew it, I could no longer feel the heat and humidity from before.
“Well then, shall we go?”
“Yeah, let’s go.”
You and me, with our hands connected.
So that we could escape from the frustration the world brings us,
We leapt out into the night sky.
I like this new “unaliving herself” euphemism
Now imagine this as OMORI's final song, with Basil coming.
SEIZE THE MOVE, YOU'RE ON ME, FALLING, THEN WE WERE DISSOLVIN'!
It tricked people "who can't understand japanese."
Sound of happy sounding japanese songs: 💓😊🍡🍭🍓
The lyrics: 💀😭🔪🩸
I was like "i wonder what song she's talkinf abo- OHH DAMM THAT ONE"
Another good example of this is "inochi no tabekata"/" How to eat life" By Eve. It's a really great song so I looked up the lyrics in English because I wanna know Japanese. But then I realized that it's about someone going insane with no one to help him. I mean the last line is literally: boku ga taberu mae ni boku wo mitsukete. Or in English: Find me, before I eat myself. So you can decipher that meaning if you want. But I just kinda stayed on the surface and left it there.
When I heard it I was like “is that idol?!”
So Death pulled an Omegle stunt on some poor dude? That’s sick even by my standards!
The song sounds like me in the outside but the meaning is like me in the inside
