  • This explains 7 different kiteboarding accidents in detail. Hopefully learning from these will help people avoid the mistakes of the past.
Thanks so much to all of the uploaders. It's not easy to show the world your worst moments, but your clip may well save someone's life. Power kites are complex, powerful and often counter-intuitive - your best way of staying safe is to take plenty of lessons.

I have watched a lot of videos on kite surfing this year as Im new to the sport and on my 6th lesson and I have to say Kite-Surf-College Tutorials are the closest you will get to actually having lessons which is a MUST for this sport. Thank you for your efforts in make these tutorials.

Agree with everything except for it's a "MUST" to have lessons. With so many RUclips tutorials, you really don't need lessons if you do your research and better to spend that money on gear. Greetings.

Great video with analysis. I have developed for myself a pre-launch very quick checklist (2 second) that I am using all the time and it helps me to avoid silly mistake. It's spelled KITE and it's symbolic.
K is for checking (K)Quick Release, put my hand on it to know where it is and which direction to eject, so I don't have to find it.
I is for checking the LINES, straight, no twist and correctly hooked
T is for checking the SafeTy leash for being correctly hooked up
E is for checking the Environment, wind, people, other kiters, hard obstacles on land, etc.
It takes me 2 seconds to check while the launcher helper is holding the kite, since I use my hand to run through the list. I have stopped few mishaps before they happened with this checklist. I just post it here so you can develop your own checklist and FWIW

I had a close call in Boracay early this year due to the tangled powerline. (I was in a hurry to go out to save/help my windsurfer friend who was stuck in the rip currents where coral reeves were sharp and shallow). I was able to release the leash within 2 seconds when I realized I was in trouble although I got lifted about 3-4 ft in the air. Other than my ego, I did not get hurt. People will always think that something like this will happen only to other people until it happens to you.. (Thank you so much for the important info!!)

I’ve just recovered from a kitemare where I broke three ribs, my jaw and my nose. More significantly I was knocked unconscious for several minutes and can’t remember the following 24 hours. I’m lucky to be alive. This is a dangerous sport at times and kiting within your capability to a important. But most important of all is learning safety routines and practicing ejecting the chicken loop and leash eject multiple times so that their use becomes second nature. Thank you so much for this fantastic video. You’ve given the kiting world plenty of tips which are useful to the experienced kite surfer as well as the newbie. Look forward to the next one.

Thanks a lot for putting this up. I've been kiting since 2000 and was lucky to never have had an accident or even dangerous situation. I came from paragliding where neglect can be fatal. Check your material, check your lines, let yourself help by others on the beach. Admittedly not every beach offers helping hands especially in over commercialized spots it is sometimes hard to find someone helping you start your kite. I've seen people with jet skies on the beach where a kiter was kilometers away from the beach and going offshore when asking them they pretended to see nothing. When pointing to the fact that they are refusing their duty to help they got a little nervous and started the engines. Even before starting your session make sure that someone could take care of you if things go south.

Hello Fartssmellgood. It's certainly scary when your kite doesn't behave as normal. It's happened to me before, of course. I had a bridle wrap itself around a valve as the launcher picked up the kite. A bit harder to spot, but a similar situation. I have been kiting for 6 years and during the first 3 I experienced pretty much all of that, injuring myself pretty bad. One thing I would add is watch the depth of the water when learning jumps. I fell head down onto rocks in 20cm of water while learning backrolls. Result: 25 stitches on my head, and coming this close to a skull fracture. I never kite without a helmet now, despite being very experienced.

My kitemare was August 15, 2018 and nearly cost me my ring finger. Riding a surfboard in shoulder-high swell on the Columbia River I fell and the safety released. The wind had gotten gusty, but I tried to reset the chicken loop after getting the kite to the window and swimming towards it to relieve line tension. I used my spare kite leash (always carry two) to keep the board nearby, but forgot to put on a loop for this after taking the straps off (lesson 1). While holding the chicken loop steady in my left hand, pulling out the release in my right, and cursing that I didn't have a third to move that pesky toggle in place, the current had taken me downstream thus tensioning the lines and moving the kite back into the window where it hot-launched and dislocated my ring finger at the second knuckle. Lesson 2 is pay *very careful* attention to your situation if you're not simply going to execute a textbook self-rescue. I waved at my friend who was riding swell towards me and noticed my finger then went into shock - lesson 3 is don't panic but stay focused on survival. At this point there's a barge coming and I'm getting cold - lesson 4 is even when the air is 90F and water 72F you can still hypotherm and 2-mil shorties are cheap. If nobody had been there to help pull me ashore, I'd like to hope I'd have executed a self rescue and gotten the hell out of the channel and to a nearby shore (not the one I launched from), but I can't say for sure. (Also lesson 5 is you're never too experienced to be caught by surprise).

You have missed another important lesson from Kevin's crazy superman flight over interstate traffic. There were 2 or 3 other kiters that were out with him and came in about the same time when the squall winds blasted in. Those other kiters got in safely because they kept their kites low as they came in. Kevin has his kite up a zenith, so got lofted upward above the beach, then down into that first sand-slam. Had he kept his kite low, even if dragged across or downwind, it would have been a much less hazardous situation.
Learning is : when hugely over-powered, it's usually far safer to keep your kite very low, near the ground, than it is to have it at zenith.

    • @huzcer
      @huzcer 3 года назад

They were all out in a storm - Storm Fay - nobody not have been out. Wind looks about 50 knots. True he might have fared better by keeping his kite low or better still just releasing his safety full stop when the wind picked up but they were all stupid to be out in a storm forecast.

Very nice video. Once I had a kitemare when y pulled the chicken loop eject in low wind and started to wrap the bar as a self rescue before the kite completely flagged out. The wind picked up and the kite started a death loop until the safety line got broken. In low wind with the current in the same direction of the wind it's takes a while for the kite to flag out. Never explained in the demo safety videos of any brand.

    • @3rd_coast223
      @3rd_coast223 5 лет назад

i agree with you, actually its best to pull extra line out on your flag out (say 5 meters) and start to wrap that flag out line first if at all possible, then continue wrapping all 4 lines together. you will of course have some extra line hanging out of the other 3 lines when you reach your kite but that is usually fairly manageable when youre on your kite vs having it still pulling you down wind.

Nice video! Maybe you can add this classic scenario to your next video. I don't have it on camera though.
I injured my ancle while trying to land while being very overpowered. I realized that I couldn't ride upwind anymore. Once I saw another kitesurfer on the beach I left the water. I gave him the landing signal. He just smiled at me. I gave him the landing signal again. He started walking towards me. The wind dropped, kite fell down, wind came back, the kite was pulled up through the power zone and I landed quite hard on my foot. At that point this kitesurfer reached me and asked me what's going on. Turned out he was a beginner waiting for his lessons to start. Using the chickenloop might have done the trick once the wind dropped. Now I'm probably out for the rest of the year due to this stupid incident.

Excellent tutorials. I think the video takes it a bit easy on the inexperienced kiters that are depicted. And one problem I saw in a few of them were that the kiters were launching with the intent of immediately getting the kite up to the zenith of the wind window, or they were standing with the kite in the air resting at the zenith of the wind window. If there are any uncertainties in the area or the wind, i.e., a kiter is not in a very smooth onshore breeze at an expansive beach, the zenith can be a VERY dangerous place because it creates vertical lift on the kiter, unlike when the kite is off to the extreme left or the right of the wind window, much closer to the ground, which produces lateral pull. In several instances depicted in this video, unanticipated kite power at the zenith lofted the kiters, and almost no one can think quickly enough to pull a safety at that split second moment. When the kite is lateral, the kiter often has at least a moment to realize they don't like what's happening, and while their feet are still on the ground fighting the erratic pull of the kite, they have a much greater opportunity to make the decision to eject.
Long story short, NEWBIES: BEWARE OF THE ZENITH, LEARN TO FAVOR THE KITE IN A MORE LATERAL POSITION. That said, nothing makes kiting safe in gusty winds.

That last video is just upsetting. Self launching in between several other kites, having a person in there that might have gotten tangled up as the kite was launching.
I've watched this video a while ago already but most of these accidents are very preventable, especially with the improved security a depower features on newer kites.
Do take lessons if you have never flown a kite, do ask if you are unaware of the local conditions, currents, tides or other no fly zones or dangers.
Don't try to save money on a kite. Get a new one or a properly refurbished one from a trusted local store.
I had to do a water rescue the other day. Kite fell in the water, seemed like lines got tangled. Instead of trying to fight with it i just had myself dragged 30 min to the beach. It's not great, but it beats hospital stays and bills.

Self-launching whilst there are multiple people around is the most arrogant thing you could do.
It puts everybody at risk that’s on the beach, especially non-kiters who won’t recognize a dangerous situation and can get injured by the kite, lines or person.

Actually on Kitemare #7, the No.1 lesson here is not to launch your kite near someone else. As you can see, the kite hit the other rider, and this is extremely dangerous as the lines could've cut that person. In that case, the best way is to have assisted launch, but never near to someone else.

Most of these appear to be beginner accidents. Perhaps people trying to learn without an instructor as I attempted to do. I went through a few nasty mishaps. All in a remote part of Saudi Arabia where nobody else kiteboarded. Then I caught on to using short lines and smaller kites. I never really learned to kiteboard in water but I did get to be ok at kiting on land with a mountainboard and kitebuggy.

Is it practical to use a smaller kite that can't drag you around, or does that not keep up enough speed?

Deathloop handelt.

In #3 you said: “this is very dangerous unless you know how to handle it”.
But you didn’t mention how. So could you tell how? ☺️🙏
