    • @nelsaf365
      @nelsaf365 24 days ago +46

      @subbywan1422 Indeed. We cannot blanket the government in the idea that all within are corrupt just as we cannot cover society in a blanket of innocence. The problem is money. Money makes the oligarchy. The oligarchy entrenches itself into the power that has an army. Make rules for the money and Maybe we can start again.

    • @subbywan1422
      @subbywan1422 24 days ago +14

      @nelsaf365 not just money. It's certainly a primary driver, but we, the voters, still keep electing the people who keep reinforcing the oligarchy. We're stuck with a two-party system of our own making.

    • @nelsaf365
      @nelsaf365 24 days ago +10

      @subbywan1422 Thank you! You are correct AND you acknowledge that we have only two choices. Third party candidates are only issue party candidates. I LOVE Bernie Sanders, but the Independent Party stands as strong as the Green or libertarian; they are issue parties. Strong identity candidates need REAL party affiliation. The best of the worst in identity candidates is now in the WH.

      In 1970, I gave up going to school in San Francisco and left for Greece for a year with my Greek boyfriend. That's why I know exactly what fascism looks like. The moments I remember were the streets of San Francisco and Berkeley jammed with people and sitting in a small breakfast nook on the beach in northern Greece listening to the Kent State murders on Voice of America. I think Trump has disbanded The Voice of America.

It sounds like history is repeating itself.

    I am an Ohio resident. I graduated from Kent State University starting there in 1984. This of course 14 years after the Kent State shootings by our national guard. I passed the first memorial, where the shootings occurred, every day on my way to class. The names of the murdered people are forever stuck in my memory. Every May 4th the campus newspaper, The Kent Stater published the history of the day. It always made students think about what happened where they walked daily for four years. This was when I learned to distrust the government. It was also the time of Ronald Reagan. So not just my state government, but also our federal government. I agree with you about a whole generation of young children being scarred for life and having to be scared when they should have childhood memories and experiences. Besides myself my three adult children do not trust the government, but also law enforcement and the courts. My sons went to Ohio State and learned more about capitalism and our government than they did in our small town 30 miles west of Cleveland. I am sad for all children and young adults because there future is unsure, scary and most likely hostile. Thank you Heather and Joanne for your discussions of the current situation and providing the history of the country. Beth Yuhasz

      Their father's hell did slowly go by
      Feed them on your dreams
      The one they pick's the one you'll know by🎶
      When Kent State happened we knew that love had failed and hatred would take over. That was the acme, the pinnacle, of the USA civilization and we have been going down ever since. It was a good run, but evil abounds.

      I was 21 and had just become NCState's Student Body President when the Kent State and Jackson State murders of students happened. Even our pretty quiet campus was shocked and dismayed. Today, there are so many moments when I think, 'I'm so sorry,' to my 3 very grown children, and my 3 not-so-grown grandchildren. I simply neeeeeever imagined such times/threats would ever come to our beloved democracy. Once again, shocked, dismayed, and ever so sad.

      My kids are 21 and 24. They and all their friends were pushed to the left even further by the current admin. Between the failure to protect them from school shootings, the terrible economy, taking away options for students loans for an education, shutting down research into medical advancement, taking away rights... the list goes on and on. These kids are pissed, and they believe that the old people in power have and continue to ruin their futures. They believe what those in power are stealing kid's futures and rights to line their own pockets with more money than the old people cannot even use up before they die. No person I know under the age of 35 will ever vote for a right leaning person ever again.

    I'm a Millenial and all I've known is societal trauma. I was in 5th grade during 9/11, growing up in a Northern NJ suburb where roughly half my class lost their parents when the towers went down. Then the Recession of '08 happened right when I graduated high school. An ex-boyfriend of mine soldiered in Afghanistan and never returned the same. Then Covid happened just as I was establishing my career working in public schools. Now I've recently taken a break from my career to be a full-time mother and find out the government is run by baby-eating lunatics thanks to the E-files. I'm not sure how much more we can collectively take at this point.

      I get that it feels like your generation has carried a lot. But respectfully, Millennials haven’t been uniquely shaped from hardship - every generation has faced defining crises. My parents are 97 and 98. They lived through the Great Depression, World War II, and constant uncertainty. The point is: they survived, adapted, and kept building. They are still here at 97 and 98... I was lucky to learn about resilience from the "greatest" generation. Us boomers had our challenges too , and many of us are still here!!
      Hard times aren’t new - but neither is human resilience. We’re not at the end of what we can collectively handle. If anything, this is when people step up, get involved, support their communities, and create change. History shows we can - and we will.

      I will step out to say that the children taught otherisms, hate, fear, isolation, greed, selfishness, and how to disconnect from ones humanity. Those individuals will indeed resent their household for stunting their awarenes, their humane growth and the experiences they were too restricted and burdened from having.
      There are more civil, sane, accepting and tolerant people of good will than there are those that rant fear isolation and hate. Its just that the fringe is louder and wilder beccause in their bubble they've never asked true questions of themselves, never challenged themselves, never done introspection or faced the person in the mirror with the ugly character to ask why ?
      Everyone is human in species and also wants to live, to love and be loved, to have joy, to srtive, thrive, survive and be in peace and be at peace.
      No one grouping of persons should have a monopoly on those human priviledges and principles.

    At 81 now, was born and raised in Massachusetts, and my education (from 3rd to 12th grade) told me of the beginnings of our country, and formed my love of history, from visiting the (only a few miles from my home) concord bridge, to waikng the graveyard near the Old north church in Boston with my grandmother, Vsiting the Contitution as the first of our fight brought to the opression of the British Navy. I served in the Navy as most of my family has, think the children have no Idea of the path our country has tread on. (Flag- Don't tread on me)

    9:17 I’m the spouse of an immigrant (GC holder) and parent of a mixed race child. As DHS has been grabbing anyone who “looks” foreign, I’ve had to sit my 12 YO down & practice reciting his Miranda rights. I’ve had to tell him to comply, to expect them to be physically & mentally abusive, to know there will be kind people in detainment that will help him & to know that I won’t stop fighting until he (and possibly his dad) are released & returned home. There are a great many parents who are profoundly aware of the trauma all of this is causing and the distrust it sews. We try to bolster them by pointing out the helpers, by naming the people we know we can trust and rely on. But we think about it…every day.

But I have tears reading that you've had to do this as a parent and that your son has been exposed to this kind of evil cruelty - coming from the government! I’m around your age. Clarence Thomas was my first inkling into the corruption of our justice system. I was fortunate to be living in a progressive community then. While a part of me resisted the idea that looking beneath what appeared pristine was black and ugly, my ideas of what was supposed to be solid was cracking. It was real then and we need to see this now. Now I have two children who are corrupted by the GOP’s behavior; their outlook, based on the violence of that party, will view politics with a corrupted lens. Never will I trust a republican again.

    I'm shocked that neither of these brilliant historians realized/mentioned that since 1999 - TWENTY SIX years ago - that at least 5 generations of young students have had to learn what shooter drills are - and practice them. So yes, kids today are afraid of and angry at their government - but for 26 years we've scared the crap out of our youngest citizens already - not knowing who was coming through the door to their classrooms.

    • @karenkoziol5353
      @karenkoziol5353 21 day ago

      Yes, for the past 26 years students have done shooter drills, and that’s deeply troubling. But the idea that fear in schools is something uniquely modern ignores that previous generations were trained to prepare for annihilation on a global scale. (Remember "duck and cover"?)
      Kids shouldn’t have to live with fear - then or now. But history shows this isn’t new. The real issue isn’t which generation had it worse; it’s whether we choose to address the problems instead of framing them as unprecedented. What are we going to do about it?

    Distrust of the government is not a new thing. I am remembering the Vietnam war, protests against it and Kent State... and the Watergate scandal. But now, the lies are rampant from the top on down. And the fear created with the masked agents with tactical gear and pepper spray, flash bangs, AK rifles.. etc. like a war zone. We not only distrust them, but fear is also created. But also, a backlash to this is "we the people do not want this, we don't want to live like this. It is cruel and inhumane, and hopefully the tide will turn, although it will take a long time.

    7:15. When you spoke about this, I instantly thought about my mom who shared with me how she inadvertently sat in the front seat of a bus when she was around 8 years old (around 1954 in Rural South) and the bus didn’t move. She didn’t realize what was going on and the bus didn’t move and it took a moment for her to realize that she was sitting in the FRONT when she was supposed to be in the BACK. She was so hurt she got off the bus and that moment of the bus (Not a private bus but public government bus) not moving because of the color of her skin stayed with her. Governmental actions have lasting impacts, especially on kids.

    I remember learning about the Civil War and being surprised when my teacher said brothers fought against brothers. It seemed so foreign to me, that anyone could choose an ideology over family, let alone one that enslaved people. Now, though, I get it. I see it in my own family, where the younger generations (now in their late 30s-early 50s) are dramatically opposed to the older generations (closet or overt MAGA) and one proudly MAGA 25yo. It has real impacts. Relationships are irreparably broken; others are very strained. When future school children look back in 50-100 years, will they wonder how families could be so drastically divided over what is happening right now? It's heartbreaking on so many levels.
