Transcript of 3 Things Will Get Your Book in Bookstores video:
• Getting Your Book in B...
Are you publishing a book do you want bookstores to carry that book?
I've got three things you're going to have to do to make sure that your book can be carried by books
You might be thinking about distribution how are you going to get that book baby into the hands of your ideal readers. Well, of course one of the ways is through bookstores and I got to tell you there is nothing better than the feeling of walking into a bookstore and seeing your book on the Shelf. It's pretty darn cool but truth be told you really don't have to have your book on the shelves of a book store in order to have great sales results a chunk a massive chunk of book sales are happening online and largely through Amazon.
But that said bookstores are an important part of distribution and if you want your self-published book to have a shot at getting on the bookshelves of your local bookstore or book stores across the country then you must do these three things.
Where you've chosen to upload and offer your book as your print on demand solution it's going to play a massive role in the first place as to whether your book will get on bookstores.
When you upload it through Create Space which is Amazon's company you might think book
stores will carry it because it says something like that on there that this is the wider distribution channel but the reality is very few books will ever be sold to bookstores through Amazon there's a lot of reasons why this is the case.
If book store distribution is important to you your best solution probably is to go through Lightning Sources Ingram Spark division books published through that are available through the Ingram catalog which is where bookstores will look for and buy your book but here's three things you need to do if you want those bookstores to buy your book.
NUMBER ONE:
ISBN number some self-published authors skip on this now in Canada if you are a Canadian author you can get this number for free and I have produced a video showing you exactly how to do it it's super simple and we're lucky in Canada to have this free.
NUMBER TWO:
You are setting up your discounts there are options but the reality is if you don't make your book discounted by fifty five percent which is what bookstore is expected to be discounted by is they are not going to order that book.
NUMBER THREE:
Something I talked about extensively in a past video because this one burned me is to make your books returnable.
If your books are not returnable bookstores will not order from you and I encountered this issue
even though I stopped my books were returnable there was some country based issues as I was getting my books listed in provinces across Canada and long story short check out this video make your books returnable and expert tip have them destroyed don't off to send them back to you so those are three things that you absolutely must do in order to increase the likelihood that you can get that book on the bookstores shelf.
There's a whole bunch of other things you're going to have to do to get bookstore distribution as a self-published author but these three things lay the strong foundation for it to at least be possible.
Got a question go ahead post it right here in RUclips and I just might shoot a video to help you out alright thanks for stopping by.

Bookstores have become an old fashioned idea. Most books sell online nowadays. I've visited bookstores only twice last year, but I've purchased online a dozen times.
2:05 - 1. get ISBN #
2:32 - 2. discount ur bks by 55%.
2:48 - 3. make bks returnable.
An oldie but a goodie. Great video. Thank you for the 3 tips.

I have a book that I have been writing since 2009 and the Name of my book is called The words of The Living Saviour and I think personally that it will move people and will enhance their prospective in their life.. I was inspired to write this book for people to receive God's love and inspiration.
Great content will be in touch soon :)
who needs tv :) thanks for sharing
Thanks for the tips Julie! I noticed you have different discounts based on country. I'm in Australia and have been told that 40% is the usual discount here? How do you find out the most appropriate discount by country?
Also, have you tried advertising in the Ingram cagalogue? Wanting to know if it is worth the investment. My book is dystopian fiction.
Thanks so much! Such helpful videos.
Nice
Am in Canada and am trying to get my book in book stores..Once Broken & Restoration after Brokenness..
To get in the book stores you need to do one of three things: 1. Sell a ton of copies on Amazon so they can see you are selling books. 2. Do an event at the local store and have a clear marketing plan as to how you're going to sell those books 3. Potentially sell your book on consignment if they offer it ... then promote it so there is sell through. If they see it is going to sell they will carry it.
If I’m going to purchase my own isbn for Ingram Spark should I use the same one I purchased, for publishing with create space as well or should I take advantage of the free one for create space and use the purchased one for Ingram? Thank you for the helpful tips. I’m subscribed 😊
This should help: ruclips.net/video/LUkJfnYElKk/видео.html
killed some time :P good job
I just published my most recent book, Stop Complaining and Get Rich! On Createspace. What are my next steps to get into book stores? Do I republish on the other site you were referencing in the video? Also, my book hit #1 New Release on Kindle! Thank you for the help.
Probably what I would do and you'll have to move your book to KDP Print now that Createspace has shut down. :)
at a loss :P nice job
Question: I've made my book available through expanded distribution on Amazon. So, how do I get retail stores aware they can purchase the book through Ingram Source? Do I need to take special steps with Ingram Source?
You need to upload your book to Ingram Spark and then it's in the Ingram Catalog.
Can you share the other ways that self published authors can get their book in bookstores?
Hi, since Amazon killed off Createspace, would 48 hour printing express be a good alternating to print and shift physical copies of my book?
I personally recommend Ingram Spark if you want book store distribution
@@BookLaunchers Thank you for the advice.
what do you mean with the 55 sale , where do I type that please ?
Sorry - I missed your question! When you're in the Ingram Spark account setting up distribution for different countries you'll be asked to set a wholesale discount. That's where you need to set it to 55%. I can film a video showing you the set up another time but hopefully that helps!
Why do you have the books destroyed instead of having them sent back to you?
I explain it right here: ruclips.net/video/oZtXqprGPE4/видео.html
Can you raise the price to make up for the 55 percent discount or does it have to be priced the same across all platforms?
You can try and see if the market will bear a price increase.
How to make a sale sheet for bookstores? Do you bookstores purchase directly from the author or do they order from your publishing company
They purchase through the Ingram Catalog. We use the media kit as a sales sheet typically. ruclips.net/video/R7ZqocLE6MU/видео.html will show you what goes into the media kit. Most important for a book store is that there are reviews and sales volume.
#Replay...
I have approached some online bookstores in Asia because my book is on Amazon as paperback and kindle which is not an option for people living there. They can't purchase. I have seen their websites listing books from around the globe. The problem is I have no idea how the process works and how to go about it. Can you explain how it works from approaching and selling the books to online bookstores without having to touch your book? Thanks
I haven't done anything in Asia but have you checked with Ingram to see if they distribute there? Amazon wide distribution isn't that effective internationally.
How do we know that book stores are not selling out and then wanting to return the books or selling most of them and wanting to return a few but claiming that none of them got sold?
I believe they rip the cover off and mail it in ...
"Have them destroyed????" 😢
To save on the delivery charges, I suppose?
I have another video that you should watch ... explains it all: ruclips.net/video/oZtXqprGPE4/видео.html
It’s not easy. You have to be a celebrity or super famous for big name bookstores to allow it
That's not true - you just have to know how to sell books!! But it is not easy and maybe not even that important to get into bookstores these days.
Book Launchers it’s really not easy. That’s what I’m trying to say. That’s what my publisher says...
I got my non-fiction book in the Barnes&Nobles bookstore, BookPeople bookstore, The BookWoman bookstore, The Dead Tree bookstore, and on Walmart marketplace. I'm currently waiting on collection development to get it in the local libraries.
My problem is that I need to get them off those bookstores shelves and into customers hands.
How do I do it?
Thanks in advance.
Congrats! You've done some great work to get it available everywhere. Have you checked out my Book Selling Gameplan? BookLaunchers.com/sellbooks - those are the best ways I've moved a lot of books.
Oh my how did you get your books in so many stores?
Congratulations keep up the positive and great attitude my question is how did you get your books in stores
@@teamdiesel100bx7 - I went to the manager of each bookstore and asked. I have my books available through Ingram Spark and that was the game-changer. Many bookstores do not like Amazon. Make sure you have your books available on many platforms. BTW. I got my books in my local libraries. Again, talk to management. It works!!! Good luck.
@@unityaboriginelove6595 Thank you for the advice thank you for the information I’m a definitely keep that in mind I’m currently writing a book myself and I appreciate it a lot and wish you the best of luck
I am in the process of self publishing my book through xlibris. I have one year of bookstore returnability and I absolutely have no idea how it works. Please help me out here as I want to make the most out of this service.
Thanks a ton.
Hi! I am sorry but I am not familiar with how they work with book stores. I can tell you that with a provider like Ingram Spark you need your books to be returnable, but you want to select the 'return and destroy' option as the return to author can be very expensive for you! See this video: ruclips.net/video/oZtXqprGPE4/видео.html and this one: ruclips.net/video/zEmC8w_DhVY/видео.html
Hi THERE, I APPRECIATE YOUR ANSWER A LOT, so I I have not selected anything yet. No one has asked me to do so at the publishing stages. If you take a glance at this and maybe tell me what and how I can choose that option I will be very thankful.
www.xlibris.com/Servicestore/ServiceDetail.aspx?ServiceId=BS-48872
I can't believe they charge $699 for this!! The only way you come out ahead on this is if a WHOLE bunch of book stores order your book and don't sell it, then return it. They don't take back your royalties ... so you keep them. Let's say you are making $6/book (which is about what I make). This means you'd need more than 100 books returned for this to even start to make sense. But here's the thing: Xlibris does not have control over whether a bookstore will order and stock your book. Each bookstore, be it commercial and independently owned, manages its own business operations including which title to stock on its shelves.
This means that you could be paying them $700 to have one store or NO stores carry your books.
And to have to pay annually to continue to keep this single box checked inside of the Ingram System is OUTRAGEOUS.
I sold THOUSANDS of copies and did a ton of book events in book stores so they ordered cases and cases of books. This is why I got hit with a $1200 bill. But since then the returns have been less than $100 a year and my books are still selling at an ok pace.
Are you committed to working with them? You should set up your own Ingram Account because that does allow the possibility of a book store ordering it, and not have to pay them every year for that. Unless I am missing something here this is a horrible rip off.
I wish I would have known I could chat with you earlier. So, I purchased a package for them which included this service.
So, for starters, as I am confused and have been making a lot of efforts just to know how bookstore returnability works.Do I buy the books or do I convince the bookstore to order book with their money telling then that their returnable?
I was told that this specific company apparently is one f the best so thats whyI ended up going with them
You'll have to convince the book stores to buy the books ... usually requires a great marketing plan to sell through the books. To get my books in book stores to begin with I did some book signing events and did a bunch of media appearances around the event to promote it. Once your book is selling well it's easy to get book stores to carry it, but initially it requires a lot of work to get the sell through unless it's really popular / well known / or a subject people are looking for to begin with. Good luck!!
Wow...where have you been hiding at with this info???
Thanks!

This content is outdated. You get an ISBN on Amazon AND booksellers get them at a discounted rate. And yes, they are returnable.
That's not actually true.... the number you get from Amazon is not an ISBN it's an ASIN and bookstores can't use it. ruclips.net/video/LUkJfnYElKk/видео.html
Why the hell should we have them destroyed instead of sending them back?
I know it sounds horrible - but here's what happened to me: ruclips.net/video/oZtXqprGPE4/видео.html
