Yes, Northeastern Thailand (Issan) was once Lao territory, but boarders change ans land was divided during French colonialism. The Mekong pretty much became the new boarder between the two counties (Thai/Lao) except for the Champasak Province. Lao is on both sides of the Mekong river.

Lao really preserve the forest vibe. there capital city is very from what Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Jakarta looks like. when i vbeen to vientiane i was shocked that it feels like your in a rural village. very quite, underdeveloped and, backward life even in paying they dont have credit cards the facilities are not upgradable.
It would be great if you spent more time interacting as this is where you get a deeper sense of a country and the true resilience of people. Buying drinks and food and hopping from place to place is a bit boring dude.
The Thai food that everyone loves except pad thai is actually Lao food. They call it Isaan food since it's from Isaan area. Thaification is the reason why Lao food is heavily in Thai food. They just stole it and called it their own.
The US should forever be paying Laos for making that country the most bomb country ever on Earth. You don't understand why the current donor is still the US, that reason alone should be why.
Lao is actually top 15 poorest countries in the world along with african countries which has only $1,000 below gdp per capita. i been to their capital called vientiane and was just stayed for only 1 day since it has nothing much to offer it looks like a small community in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia or Philippines coz i been to these countries and These countries are way more developed compared to the rest of South East Asia except Singapore which is in another level.
