  • Want to improve the sound of the Blackstar HT Studio 20? Just upgrade the speaker. Watch in HD with good speakers to hear sound differences.

    With a Celestion Vintage 30 in your Blackstar HT Studio 20, you'll increase the volume and clarity. Now you can play with a band and easily cut through the mix.
    Sound comparison was recorded by taping the speaker grill with indicators showing where the mics are to be placed before and after the speaker change. Two SM57 mics used with no phasing issues.

    This demo has stood the test of time! I recently picked up a Blackstar HT-20 and also swapped out the stock speaker (Rocket 50) in favor of the Vintage 30 (UK version although the China version still rocks as you've demonstrated) and so far I'm thrilled with the differences. Thanks for the awesome video comparison. I'm glad I joined the club!

    I put a Vintage 30 in a HT Club 40 and it's a completely different amp from the stock speaker. The absolute best upgrade you can do for a ht amp!

      Did your ht club 40 have the same speaker as this one? I have the club 40 mkii which comes with a Celestion seventy 80 and I’m thinking of doing the swap.

      @@thedakotahurley I did not do the swap unfortunately. I kinda wanted to do a cab instead but yeah money got tight and I only play casually so it wasn’t really worth it.
      Funny story though. It was sounding actually kind of horrible and I couldn’t figure out why. Then I realized my super shitty digitech pedal was causing issues. I would have assumed with all processing off it wouldn’t mess up the sound. Well anyways I think it shaved off some volume and colored the sound ever so slightly enough to make it sound like you had a paper thin wall between you and the amp.
      I really only was using it for looping which made me super upset because then I coukdnt use it haha

  • @jAMMAN798

    Good point. Blackstar, Marshall, Fender, Line 6, etc tend to use cost effective speakers in their lower priced combo amps. They voice these amps to work with the lower quality speakers & for the most part it works, until you crank the volume & have no dynamics to cut through the mix. So a speaker replacement of good quality, may require that you have to either add or decrease your treble/bass and even master volume settings at bedroom levels. However, you'll gain punch & overall note clarity.

    HUGE difference!! I have played these amplifiers and really liked them at first, but after trying various different amplifiers found them to be darker, and less organic sounding than say a Marshall DSL15, or even the 40HT. With the new speaker i hear more pronounced mids, and much more detail, not to mention volume. The stock speaker had a little more bottom end, but the G12 sounded much better to me, cheers.

    Thank you. The original speaker that comes with the HT20 is fine for very low volume usage, but as soon as you get close to half volume or more it tends to sound like someone threw a blanket over the amp which makes it not so great for gigs or band practice when using tube distortion. However the Vintage 30 speaker makes that amp really punchy and tight and retains the highs and lows at high volume, which is what is needed for playing in a band.

The Vintage 30 I used in this video brings the amp to life and makes it louder and much brighter. If you play all types of music, then it is perfect. If you only play on your top three strings or drop tunings than the G12H is preferred.

    I like that dirty channel riff 👍, reminds me of some punk stuff i listen to. Yes there was a big difference, i remember when my son started playing guitar seriously I started looking up amps and speakers and the Vintage 30 always took first place and i saw quite a few, the only speakers that I could say were better sounding were some Cream backs but everything else was beaten by the V 30's. My son found a Line 6 4x12 V 30's loaded cab for $120 at a pawn shop and I found the very same cab for $220 a few years earlier.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад

      RoyvanRikken The Vintage 30 is rated at 60 watts. It would work fine in pretty much any amp up to 100 watts output (with speakers in guitar amps, it is not necessarily that important to match amp wattage to speaker wattage, but you should keep things within reason... i.e., a 100 watt head powering a 5 watt speaker may be overkill. What is important is to match Ohms, i.e., 4, 8 or 16). The Vintage 30 has great punch in a closed back cab. Orange and Mesa use them in their closed back cabs.

      +Marcos H. Ary Sorry for the late reply (RUclips seems to hide some of the comments from me). The speaker is 16 ohm. The screws are just the ones that came with the amp (you're average wood screws). The amp is outstanding for a practice, studio and gig amp. I have used it with a drummer with no problem. You can use it to practice/gig with a band in small clubs. In bigger clubs you'll need to mic it.

    I have the ht20 head and was thinking about going to either the Club 50 head or the HT40 combo. I feel like the current sound is a bit muddy on the OD channel, and like there isnt enough headroom. But maybe the fix would be changing the speaker in the 2x12 cabinet? What are your thoughts?

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад

      +Jason Maltz The HT20 does get muddy at increased volume. An HT40 or Club 50 would solve that issue. A speaker change in the HT20 (like the Vintage 30) makes lead guitar stand out more at higher volume. However not as much change in rhythm. I think it is because Blackstar uses a type of compression in the overdrive gain, so when it's cranked it just sounds flat when too many notes are coming out at once.

      +Carlos Pereira Cen You can put in an 8 ohm or 16 ohm speaker of any brand. You just have to be sure to plug the speaker cable into the correct speaker output on the back (either 8 ohm or 16 ohm).

    • @Vesperoth
      @Vesperoth 9 лет назад

      Thanks man! That's great! What is the difference between 8 and 16 ohms? Sorry, Im not an expert and I'd like to know... What I knew is that 8ohms would be louder, is that right?
      Thanks bro!

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад

      +Carlos Pereira Cen In simple terms, Ohms refers to resistance. So 16 Ohms would produce more resistance than 8 Ohms. The resistance in a speaker cone is created by the amount of copper winds around the cone (8 Ohms has less). Some believe that less resistance means a more dynamic sound. I honestly can't tell a difference. As far as louder is concerned... not at all, they'd both be the same volume. However if you plugged an 8 Ohm speaker into an 16 Ohm output, the speaker would not provide the correct resistance to the amp, so it may sound louder.... at least until the amp blows up or catches on fire. :)

  • @jeffmclowry

      Jeff McLowry I'm a big fan of the Vintage 30 speaker. You can find it in speaker cabs from Marshall, Orange, Mesa Boogie, etc. It has a very high output, yet remains very articulate, punchy and bright. It's sort of like a poor man's high end alnico speaker at half the cost.

      Well I purchased two Vintage 30's and I gotta say, I like what I am hearing. I have been trying different speakers in my amp and so far all have been a Celestion of one sort or another: G12P-80, 70/Eighty, and another I can't remember the number on. Also a British Tonker, and a Fender Special Design rated at 50w. I have tried each as a single and paired with others. I figure someone will have something smartassed to say but so far I have really liked the 70/Eighty. It took a couple months to get it broke in but it smoothed our nicely. But this V30 60w has a definite change for the better in the articulation of the notes and chords. I haven't had the opportunity to turn it up loud and get the speaker working because I live in an apartment. But as soon as I see my two neighbors gone I am crankin' the bad boy up! Definitely my new favorite so far!

Does the vintage 30 increase the volume of the amp? thank u and really sorry for my english ;)

      Roby robert The watts should not matter much as your amp can't exceed them. The only thing you need to match is the Ohms. Whatever your amp calls for, that is what you need to match (4 Ohms, or 8 Ohms or 16 Ohms).

      +faridz husaini You can put either an 8 ohm or 16 ohm speaker in the HT20. Just be certain to plug the speaker into the correct output jack (i.e., 16 or 8 ohm). Just pull the wires off the old speaker and attached to the new one. No requirement to soldering. It's pretty much plug and play.

    I have this same amp and on the OD Channel I can't get it to sound nearly as good as yours, it just seems to go straight to high gain. And how did you get that nice low gain overdrive on the clean channel? I am planning on doing this speaker change and also thinking of replacing the OD Preamp tube with a 12AY7 for lower gain and a more manageable sweep.

    hi, I currently own a blackstar ht5r which doesn't have a master volume like your ht20, and i've been wondering if there is any difference in the type of distortion you get when you turn up the master and when you turn up the volume of the dirty channel?

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  10 лет назад

      Gabriel Flores The volume control on the dirty channel is used so that you can match the output to the same volume as the clean channel. This way when you switch between channels there is no sudden volume increase or decrease. The volume on the dirty channel has some effect on the gain. If you increase the volume, it will also drive the gain, depending on where you have the gain set at. This is also true if you set the gain at a certain setting, and the channel volume at a certain setting, and then increase the Master. The louder the amp gets, it will also slowly increase the overall distortion because the speaker is now being driven harder.

      +Sean Gustafson Hmmmmm.... an amp with a hum could be from anything plugged into it (cables, effects, guitars). If it hums when nothing is plugged into it, then it could be the power source. Move it to a different power source on a different circuit breaker in your home. Changing the speaker would make no difference.

    I bought an HT-20 about a month ago... I love it!!! I've thought about getting the Vintage 30 speaker for it... I'm just confused about your video... It seems that you plugged the Vintage 30 into the 16 ohm output... Shouldn't it be in the 8 ohm output for proper matching??? I played New Years Eve at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach, SC (Where Alabama was the house band for about 8 years) Everybody seemed to love the new amp sound!!! I used to play a Rivera 1-12 combo with a Vintage 30, I think the Blackstar has it beat, it was brand new, for $600.00... And I paid $1300.00 for the Rivera!!!!!!

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  11 лет назад +1

      The Celestion Vintage 30 speaker comes in an 8 Ohm and a 16 Ohm model. The one in this video was the 16 Ohm.

    • @gitrman100
      @gitrman100 11 лет назад

      Oh, ok thanks... That explains it. Do you recommend the 16 ohm, or the 8 ohm, it seems that you could increase the power output level of the amp by using one 8 ohm speaker, and connect it to the 8 ohm output...

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  11 лет назад

      gitrman100 Hmmm, I've never heard that one before and can't figure out how that could be (but I don't know everything, so it could be possible). Here is what I do know... Your amp has to produce voltage to run the speaker & the Ohms on the speaker are the amount of resistance. So if there is more resistance (i.e., 16 Ohms speaker), you're amp needs to produce more voltage. If less resistance (i.e., 8 Ohms speaker) then you select the 8 Ohm output. If you plug an 8 Ohms speaker into the 16 Ohms output, then you're amp is sending too much voltage to the speaker. The speaker may not blow, but your amp will overheat due to lack of resistance and perhaps melt a few internal parts. You can increase volume in the amp by replacing the speaker with a higher decibel one. The Rocket 50 in the Blackstar is rated really low in decibels, whereas the V30 is much higher (hence the volume increase I experienced).

    • @gitrman100
      @gitrman100 11 лет назад

      Well, my theory on the more power output comes from knowing about a power amp into PA Speakers. Some amps will give, maybe 800 watts per side with 8 ohm, and say, maybe 1200 watts per side at 4 ohm... (just a made up set of numbers, but you know what I'm saying). Power amps will put out more watts at lower ohm load. At least the PA type of power amp. I think the Blackstar is the 1st amp I've ever had that had a 16 ohm speaker... And it does have a 8 ohm output on the back. Still trying to decide if I want to replace the stock speaker with a 16 ohm or 8 ohm Vintage 30... And thanks for your replies!!! :)

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  11 лет назад

      gitrman100 Can't say if there would be any real noticeable difference between the 16 or 8 Ohm speaker, only because any difference would be adjusted for by plugging it into the matching output on the amp. So in summary, the better speaker is the one that will meet your needs for now and in the future if you decide to add additional cabs and need to make use of the available amp speaker outputs.

    • @jAMMAN798

      McFro95 It is a very easy job, just be sure to: Replace the speaker with another 16 ohm or 8 ohm one. Attach the positive and negative wires to the correct positive and negative contacts on the speaker. Plug the speaker cable into the 16 ohm jack (for 16 ohm speaker) or 8 ohm jack (for 8 ohm speaker) on the back of the speaker, and finally keep pointy objects away from the speaker because it can puncture easy.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад

      +Guilherme Freitas Correct, I've made no EQ changes in the vid. The sound difference is all due to the speaker replacement. One thing I should point out is that the Blackstar amps are factory EQ'd for the stock speakers they come with. When you add a Vintage 30 the sound is much louder, brighter and clearer so you may find the EQ settings that you're used to with the stock speaker may have to be tweaked slightly for the new speaker.

    Hey, great video! I have a question. I'm thinking about purchasing one of these but I noticed that there's two different models of these speakers -
    i.imgur.com/MvRGk3k.jpg
    and
    www.sweetwater.com/images/items/750/Vintage3016-large.jpg
    One is slightly golden (like yours in the video) and has the word "G12" or either side. The other is silver and has "G12" on one side and "8 ohm" on the other. I was wondering if there's any differences between these two speakers sound wise?

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад +1

      +Finn McLeod One of those speakers is made in the UK and the other is made in China. Also there could be a difference of Ohms between the two (8 Ohm vs 16 Ohm). Any difference you ask? In my opinion there is zero difference. A speaker is a relatively simple item to make with simple components. If it's made in the UK or China, no difference. Same is true for Ohms (8 or 16). You just get the correct Ohms to match your amplifiers output.

    • @quinnmcleod9049
      @quinnmcleod9049 9 лет назад

      +jAMMAN798 Wow thanks for the fast response! I wasn't expecting that! Would you recommend this speaker? At the moment I have the stock rocket 50 and it's very muddy and sounds like it has a blanket over it. I'm very into metal and I've heard a lot of positive things about the V30. What do you think?
      Also, I have a HT-20 too. Which ohm speaker do I get, the 8 or 16 ?

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад +1

      Finn McLeod You can get either 8 or 16 Ohms. Just plug the speaker cable into the correct jack on the back. Myself I would stick with 16 Ohms as that is what the amp is designed for. If you're into metal, then there are plenty of metal celestial speakers that have a tight bottom end such as the Celestion G12T-75 or G12K-100. The Vintage 30 is designed to push the midrange which sounds great for amps that play all types of music, but if you're only playing metal, then go with a metal sounding speaker.

    • @quinnmcleod9049
      @quinnmcleod9049 9 лет назад

      +jAMMAN798 Well I'm a diverse player. I love playing all types of music. I'm just wondering if this will suffice for metal? Thanks for all the help and input by the way! Really really appreciate it!

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  9 лет назад

      Finn McLeod It will do fine, but the Vintage 30 will push more mids and highs which is something you don't normally want in metal music. You'll just have to adjust the EQ on the amp.

    • @jAMMAN798
      @jAMMAN798  10 лет назад +1

      nacuda9 I'd say it all depends on the speaker outputs on the back of your amp (how you wish to use them in future with additional extension speakers), and if you find a price difference between the 8 ohm or 16 ohm. As for sound differences between an 8 & 16 ohm speaker through the same amp, it could be that there are, but in my experience that sometimes has more to do with how the amp is wired internally for the 8 & 16 ohm speaker outputs. I would think that in the past with old hand wired amps this would have been an issue due to resistors and wiring not being exactly to spec. But today's amps are pretty much digital circuits when it comes to the speaker outputs, so everything is matched perfectly (just my thoughts). Perhaps others have had experience with the sound of an 8 ohm vs 16 ohm and can post some helpful advice. Cheers mate.
