    This is what I love about nursing - if you don’t like one direction you’re going in, you can stop and go in another! I’m glad you were able to recognize you were unhappy and had the courage to find something new. Best of luck on your new journey! 🍀

However as I went through the orientation I found the environment, hours, staff , and patient population was just ultimately not for me. I was gonna stick it out but I knew deep down this wasn’t it. Fortunately I did apply around and I found another opportunity with a better work life balance.
    TLDR there is hope and options out there and do what is best for YOU :)

    I lived in SoCal for a few years and was in birth-work with the intention of becoming a midwife. There are definitely some hospitals in OC that are mother/baby focused and support mothers in what they want as well as ensuring patient education is a top priority. At the same time, there are many that are all about ease for the provider and staff over letting mom and her body do it’s thing as it physiologically occurs. Nurses like you are needed so if and when you’re ready to get back into L&D, speak with your local doulas/midwives and get their input on which hospitals support mom/baby/family as a whole. Stay strong and best of luck!

    • @livinglavidaluna
      @livinglavidaluna 2 года назад +1

      @@Tania-rg7jp maybe what I intended to say which was directly related to the climate of birth work in the hospital was lost in translation? I was speaking as a birthing person and birth worker, not as an advocate to stay in an environment that doesn’t financially compensate their nurses appropriately. Two different topics. I didn’t get that the pay or staffing issues was what drove her away from this specific campus so I responded to her about what I took as the issue, the quality of care (or lack there of) she was allowed to provide to her patients which included true informed consent on unnecessary interventions and patient education. I understand where your frustrations lie as we are on the same page with that COMPLETELY! I hope this clarifies that I’m by no means trying to push my opinion in a way that would suggest a “grin and bear it” approach while she subjects herself to poor pay and work conditions. I wanted to voice that as a doula and former health care employee in Southern California, there are hospitals that share her views in supporting and empowering birthing women if and whenever she is ready to go back.

      @adaeze4873 Год назад +1

      @@lunaandcoco4771hi .. as a person that burned a bridge take my advice and give that 2-4 week notice. If you’re in training/orienting it makes it much easier to quit/move to another department because you’re not on the schedule; you’re basically just a tag along with whatever nurse is precepting you. If you are off training, talk with your manager and see what you can do about changing the unit if that’s what you wish. If you want to quit bedside nursing altogether GIVE NOTICE. I’m begging you. In a few years or even a few months you may change your mind and if you didn’t give notice the chances of you being rehired at that facility are slim to none.

Switched into a different nursing area and the same thing happened. After 5 years of this I finally took a step back and asked myself what the hell I was doing because I was NOT happy. With some soul searching I decided to give L&D a go. I actually came across your channel because of this. Your videos helped me when I was terrified of interviewing. Anyways, I’m so sorry to hear that the new job did not work out for you. There’s nothing worse than an unsupportive team in high risk situations. Yes girl! You trusted your gut- and when you know something’s not right- especially when it comes to interventions that aren’t “good”- you’re being a good nurse and making good judgement right there.
    I don’t understand why all these new grads are crying and leaving nursing because of a sucky bedside/hospital job?!?! Go to a clinic!!!!! Regular 8 hr shifts, 5 days a week- no weekends. Pay is good- if you find the right one. No burn out! I’m so happy that you found something like that!
    I’ve been an LPN for 6 years and just passed RN nursing school and I’ll be looking for an outpatient/ same day surgery/ clinic setting type place. Yes girl! Idk what they’re doing at hospitals now a days…Burning out new grads….now we have shortages…..they need to get their stuff right! Seriously. Not good! There’s new grads who want to change their profession altogether because of it!
    But anyways- sorry to rant- lol
    I’m glad you found something I KNOW you will LOVE!

    Thank you for sharing your experience on RUclips and for being so open and vulnerable. Your story really touched on a lot of really important things that both healthcare consumers and healthcare workers aren't necessarily aware of: healthcare practice style varies drastically depending on what part of the country you're practicing in, and even from hospital to hospital within the same region. This is even more so in obstetrics, where we see a huge swings in rates of all different procedures or interventions (i.e. C-section rates of 50+ % in the Miami/Dade County region to some of the lowest rates in Alaska, the Northwest, Northeast, and Southwest). In OB, the general belief among consumers is that you're going to get the same, uniform, evidence based care no matter what hospital you go to, but the fact of the matter is that you don't. It's important that consumers watch your video and hear what you have to say as someone working on the inside. It's really important to understand too that the biggest impact on a healthcare worker's practice style is the practice style of the person who has trained them. Attending physicians who train residents and fellows to practice a certain way will yield cohorts of doctors who generally practice in the same manner, whether or not it's up to date with the evidence we have. The same with nurses. Nurses who are trained in a particular style under head nurses who have absorbed a specific practical style will "birth" trainees who practice a certain way. I think it's really amazing that you gave yourself the room to question what you were learning, listened to your intuition, and ultimately make the decision that was best for you and what you felt aligned with your values and morals. Best of luck to you in your new role!

  • @MakaylaLynnOnYoutube
    @MakaylaLynnOnYoutube 2 года назад +2

    I am going through the same situation where only two weeks were needed at my newest job to know it wasn’t a good fit. Nobody believes me and they’re telling me I would never be able to “know” this soon, but I trust my intuition more than anything, even when it’s hard to be the only person that actually trusts myself to know what I’m feeling. It’s a lonely realization, but knowing that something is not meshing with your mind, body, and spirit is such a personal experience and one that I wish more people could act on without feeling the weight of “obligation.” People at this new job keep commenting on me staying for as long as possible, and the kids are always saying how happy they are that I was hired and can help them, but I physically don’t want to get up in the morning, and it’s the worst mental battle of “stay for them” versus “live for you.” *sigh*

The number of new nurses who have unrealistic expectations about what it takes (the strength and dedication) to be happy in nursing boggles me. So many expect no nights, no weekends, no holidays, low stress, etc. I have found that for many new nurses, everything is all about them, their personal comfort, their needs, etc. For me it has always been about the patients. Such a different generation of young folks with very thin skin. It really causes me to fear for the future of nursing.

Resigned a few days later.

      @@AmyBales I know everyones experience is different. Im hopeful and excited! Wow so happy for you!! What did you look for in a med spa? I feel like its such an umbrella and last time I tried to search it was hard to find. For example the difference between a dermatology office vs a plastic surgeon vs places where its mostly estheticians. IDK if that makes sense. Is there specific criteria you looked for? Also they're offering you all the training i'm assuming? I live in NJ and work in NYC so its heavily populated with aesthetics (almost too populated) its hard to narrow it down. Do you think you'll ever go back to bedside nursing? I've been an ER nurse for 6 months, made the decision to leave "bedside" and doing more public/community health (vaccine clinics & covid recovery for homeless), scared I made the wrong decision and should have stuck it out..
    Some shifts were so good, but some (most) were just so so so bad especially with the pandemic and sicker patients being held in the ED, unsafe patient loads, short staffing..

    If this is the…..”K” system, I understand the shock. I traveled to one in Southern California and it sucked. The care was….interesting….but the staff/people were AWFUL lol. I think partially the difference in culture in general in California, but also I think that system just has a nasty culture overall. I’m glad you left. You will love aesthetics so much more. Never let a job tell you to ' relearn' without giving you extensive bibliography. Always , always do best evidence based care and document clearly objectively, immediately. In 39yrs have been made fun of for laboring in rocking chair with min pitocin,doing minimal vag checks and demanding MD attend birth of no INS mom instead of letting it be 'precip'. I also refuse to do vag exam on bleeding with fht 200... hospital provided life care when the other nurse stuck her finger through placenta. Maternal morbidity and mortality is horrendous in the US. It's up to you to turn it around. It's hard to say no,read like you are still in school, make reports to risk management and CNO and the state but if it is bad do something to change it. Quit after you do all the reports you can, don't let them spin you as a weak sister and keep messing people over.

    This video makes me cringe. Especially as a patient who has suffered due to bad practices. Why don't doctors and nurses speak out against such things? If any behavior or treatment in a hospital is unethical, it should be talked about and changed. Please to all medical professionals who witness such things, speak out. Don't just accept it or move on. Tomorrow you or your family will be in the position of the patients.

    I am in the same boat. I recently switched to L&D from ER 6 months ago and have been horrified with the practices. Constantly inducing people or C-section (Which is a whole other topic about women's health as a whole). The team is not supportive. I never got a preceptor. I have no idea what I am doing for a cervical exam because it is so subjective. But this has put me at a difficult place when communicating with providers because I honestly have no idea how dilated / effaced/ station etc. these people are. In addition, the midwife I work with is hostile which makes communicating with her very scary and intimidating. I really want to like L&D as this was my dream but it has truly become a nightmare. I want to believe that maybe this is not the right L&D unit for me and that it is better elsewhere. I am debating on quitting and returning back to the ER of which I still work at PRN. I feel your crushed spirit right now but I am glad you found something that might actually be better for your life.

I bottomed out and needed ephedrine 3 times (on a monitor)… get to mother baby and the nurse wants to give me twice the normal dose of procardia iv..without being connected to a monitor or blood pressure cuff for that matter … I said no! Thank god I was able to clear my magnesium filled brain to think… I would have ended up coding and no one would have checked on my.. until rounds.. 4 hours later! Horrible labor and delivery and mother baby practices now days! … bright side.. they caught my preeclampsia and saved my life! I would work at Walmart before I ever go to l and d! I have argued with the house nurse about brining up heart monitors for mom's that have cardiac/ blood pressure issues so we can watch them better. They mocked me and told me I should "go to ICU" if i want to look at a monitor. I can recall a young lady who's heart rate was in the 160's-170's post birth and them still arguing to not bring a monitor up to the floor. Even just a monitor on a stick. I am so sorry about your experience I wish it wasn't like that. I think the hospital systems have failed us with no education, preceptors etc.

    For me I switched to a new hospital and im feeling so much happier. After I graduated I worked a few months at an old hospital in postpartum and the short staffing was horrible. Also i was so not used to paper charting because all my placements were at a new hospital. But I learned the charting system, the problem was days shifts with no break, running around with 5 pts when other hospitals in the area have 1:4 ratio in postpartum, and getting off service pts. Every day shift on the bus ride home I would search for jobs. Also everyone was leaving the place, making staffing worse but management never did anything that caused a change.
    Then I got my now job (L&d at the hospital I had all my placements at but I never had L&d placement). There are many new stuff to learn but I'm much happier because for the most part staffing is good, the hospital is clean and new (not getto), high tech, and most importantly managed good.
    So even in the same city, 2 hospitals can be run differently during the pandemic. My family also noticed a difference because I dont come home crying and complaining to them. I understand there will be hard days but as long as everyday isnt hard, I get my breaks, I'm good.
    My advise to everyone is if you're not happy where you are, switch. It's not worth living in misery. The beauty of nursing is there are many options. Dont quit nursing all together, but quit the bad place (or something that isnt the right fit for you)

      Anything that is considered routine that shouldn’t be. Like for example, an FSE screws into a babies head and has been proven to cause them pain for up to two weeks after. Unless you absolutely cannot trace that baby, or the baby is at risk, then they shouldn’t be used just because it’s easier on the nurse. And when they’re used, they need to be fully explained to the patient, not told it’s “just a sticker” because that’s lying and obstetrical abuse. That’s just an example of course.
