A project manager and a Scrum Master are not quite the same. Project managers are accountable for delivery. Scrum Masters are not. Project Managers attempt to create transparency for senior leaders, Scrum Masters teach the developers and Product Owner how to create it. There are a lot of differences, but one this is true: many project managers also play the role of Scrum Master on their teams
Everyone is into scrum nowadays - a well qualified candidate can take upto six months before getting a job due to the influx of people awarded the scrum 3hours certification
@peterr8453, I’m curious what 3 hour certification you are referring to? You are right that Scrum is increasing in it’s adoption and usage and the marketplace is quite competitive.
Good question, i'd say it might be a little harder with no relevant background but if you have some experience that applies and you can tie that experience to the CSM (or PSM) and tie it to the job you're applying for then yes! give it a shot!
Hi, am Appolonia and your videos are helpful. I don't know if my Resume is ok. I have been applying for a scrum job and I can't get it. Could you please look at my resume for me? Thanks
I can't say we're qualified to review your resume, but you'll need to demonstrate competence and experience while touching on the keywords that would show up in a search. Most companies and recruiters are using digital tools to scan resumes to find keywords. If yours matches, you may get it reviewed and may get a call
The answer to this question really depends on your goals. That background is pretty different than the usual Scrum Master's background, but it doesn't mean learning Scrum would not be useful to you. Sounds like you have some management experience. A Scrum Master leads people without any direct authority so the only real tool they have is influence without authority. One last thing, the origins of Scrum are found in hardware development and a little bit in manufacturing. If you are still in production or intend to be, I would read or listen to the audible of "The Toyota Way" as complimentary learning to any Scrum education you get.
Hi.. I havent worked as a scrum master.. just completed my csm certification and have read well about agile and scrum now.. but do we also need to know Jira before applying for scrum master jobs? As i guess they would be expecting us to know a few tools as well? Please suggest..
Jira is just one tool some companies use. Some companies use Azure DevOps, Rally, Version One, and some just use whiteboards and post-it notes. I wouldn't worry too much about tools unless looking for a job that requires that knowledge.
I'm into U.S health care insurance as an analyst for physician claims and having 20 years experience, can I learn Scrum master, will i get job, please advice
Of course you can, but your non-traditional background will need to be massaged into the skills a Scrum Master demonstrates, like empathy, influence without authority, protection of self-management, and a focus on team effectiveness.
Assuming you know Scrum well as defined by the Scrum Guide, here's a good topic to research en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empiricism but then books on Lean manufacturing and the Toyota production system. and here's a blog with some specific books I've read and recommend responsiveadvisors.com/blog/three-books-scrum-masters-should-have/. Hope this helps get you started!
Hi, great video! Curious about any advice you would have for someone looking to transition from the construction side of project management to a scrum role?
You'll want to find a way to apply Scrum either in your current situation, or some other way. For example, can you get your team at work to work more like a team? can you encourage them to work together to solve complex problems? show them the benefits of rapid communication vs. sign offs. If you cant use Scrum at work, perhaps use parts of it to gain experience which you can use for a future interview! good stories help to get hired.
Hi, i have 4 years of experience as Java developer in Agile environment(both in scrum and Extreme programming) and i did my CSM. I want to start my career as Scrum master. Would you please suggest me on the same..
Assuming you dont have experience being a Scrum Master now.....I would recommend getting some experience on your team as coach, advisor, teacher and mentor. Really live the Scrum values for a while and help improve the Scrum Team's effectiveness. It will be challenging for many reasons, and with that experience you'll be ready for taking on a Scrum Master role and will have good stories for the interview! Good luck in your efforts!
Hello. I have been a developer for 8 years and I would like to take the next step forward into a management role. I understand a scrum master is not a project manager but I clearly understand the roles and responsibilities of a scrum master. I am a team member of a scrum and I have been involved in agile projects right from the beginning of my career. I want to be a scrum master. Will it be easy for me to get a position?
Well it sounds like you've got a lot of valuable experience that will help in the role! I think you would have a leg up against the competition with your knowledge and experience. is it "easy", well that's hard to say for sure but I would expect if you create a good resume that reflects your experience and knowledge in scrum with lots of good examples of how you helped teams be successful and posted it on a job board or two including LinkedIn you should get some inquiries pretty quickly! good luck in your search!!
@@fisheyesarans i might have to say the opposite. Based onwhat you have written you only stated agile and technical experience. A good SM (and unfortunatly that is rare) has very good communication and psychological skills. It is not the technical side which will be aplied.
@@titioyebade it's all about the experience you gain and the story you tell in an interview. for example, how did you coach your family on better ways to manage chores that lead to a cleaner house with fewer arguments about who does what? It's just one way to get a taste of relevant experience. I wouldn't recommend building your whole resume on your family. :)
I have worked as a project implementation manager for AT&T where we followed waterfall environment. Now i am looking for a SCRUM MASTER role in agile environment but i dnt have any exp interms of agile before...how to proceed further??i have done PSM1 certification...plzz guide me....thanks👍
I recommend you start using it slowly at work now. Use it on the projects you're working on now. Get practice teaching Scrum to others, removing impediments, advising, servant leading, and eventually you'll have enough experience using it and rolling it out to a traditional group that you will have tremendous value to someone looking to hire you for those skills. I think its always best to get experience using it where you are, even if they don't allow it. Get incremental value delivered, use the constant communication to improve outcomes. Its hard to argue with success if you get it to work!!
Thank you for the video... I am a SM in India with abt 5.5 years total exp.. Would you please some advise on how can i get work abroad. US would be a stretch. I am not sure .. . I am thinking UK aus or Canada.... PS: My current company is a big UK enterprise. Thanks
Well, I have never done this myself but I know someone who did this exact thing. The idea is that you find a decent-sized company that has offices in the country you'd like to work in. Build up a solid reputation as a high-performing employee, and keep an eye out for roles within your company in the desired country. Apply, and follow up. I can't say its a guaranteed way but its a way I've seen work! Good luck with it!
Of course you can! but if you have zero experience, I would expect it to be more challenging. Try to tie relevant experience to the job posting. Sometimes people have non-IT experience that relates to the role of Scrum Master. However, if the role is really looking for you to be a hybrid Scrum Master/Developer or Scrum Master/Project Manager, you're going to need experience in those domains. But if you're a good teacher, mentor, coach, facilitator, and highly knowledgeable in Scrum, keep applying and see what you can find!
I have been a dental hygienist for 6 years now, and I'm making the transition to be a Scrum master. I just got my PSM I certification. Any advice on how to get a job as a Scrum master coming from a different field?
the video has all the ideas we can come up with to get educated and gain experience to become a Scrum Master. For you, we would recommend doing a lot of reading on Scrum first before jumping into a class. just to understand where Scrum came from and what problems it solves. you'll only go over that a little bit in a 2 day class
First of all , ask yourself why you want to be Scrum Master, what is driving, motivating factor? Is it what people thought easy job and good money( that's not true btw), it more then that and as correctly mentioned by @responsive advisors lot of reading, try to join online communities , seminars, find some good experience mentor , Happy to help !! best of luck with Job hunting
back to some of the main ideas in the video, having knowledge is important so be a good study, and finding some way to apply it will help you build that resume! get the interview, and then have good stories to tell. It may take more time if you have no knowledge or experience but can be worth the investment.
Hi, I just got my CSM, and I have 15 years of experience on the tester side of development. No Agile, though. What are my chances? Does my testing experience translate well in this case?
Well, you are going to want a little experience teaching Scrum and influencing others to use it for their benefit. you could get t hat now being a tester. a good Scrum master doesn't need the title "Scrum Master" to start doing it. You just need to help your team get better results using Scrum. I recommend you get some basic experience doing things a good Scrum Master does so that you have a good story to tell on your resume and in the first interview.
I have two questions 1) How important its to be certificated as SM? 2) I have a psychology degree and work as a Trainer in IT company Teaching MS Tools, Its posible that somebody with my Background in psychology find job as a SM? Thanks for the video!
Well, there can be lots of benefits to certification. one: getting certified helps get you to be found by recruiters. Depending on the certification it could mean you have a base level understanding of Scrum and will be recognized by your industry as such. watch out for cheap or easy certification as they don't have much value. If I told you I got my MBA from a cereal box, how meaningful is that? And yes, I have heard of Scrum Masters coming from some unlikely places. Will it be harder? probably. is it possible? yes. I would keep reading and keep building experience using Scrum without anyone asking you to while looking for a SM job. Stay persistent!!
@@miguelcoronado7491 With PSM along with NLP certification you will have deadly combo, let us know if you got the job or not as SM , i can may help you
Of course you can, you just need to take on the accountability on a Scrum Team. Education helps, certification only validates your learning. If you know your stuff you should be able to find a Scrum Master job without a certification.
Is certification is really necessary to get started as a scrum master? I have QA test experience of around 10 years and has knowledge on scrum, i m looking for SM opportunity. if yes Which certification will you recommend?
Being certified is not a requirement but it can definitely help to get a job in the field. It's far more important that you know your stuff!! If you are certified and don't really know Scrum well it will be obvious in your first interview. A certification should just be a validation that you know Scrum well. What certification should you get? well, I am a Scrum.org Licensed Professional Scrum Trainer, so I may have a bias here. I do feel Scrum.org has one of the best options for learning Scrum and one of the more rigorous assessments. If you pass their assessment, it actually feels like you accomplished something. So taking my bias into consideration in your decision, I would recommend the PSM as the certification to get. Check out the class options in the description of this video!!
I m from non technical background. Working in operations. Have done Pmp certification but don't have experience in project management. I have studied scrum master guide and wish to join as a scrum master. In current job there is no role of project work. Please suggest how I can do a career change from operations to project.
Well, some experience helps and you can get that on the job if you start applying what you have learned where you are.
