A prototype Mars parachute is pulled from the sky with a rocket sled. The test applies the correct aerodynamic force to a parachute that is too large to fit in any existing wind tunnel.
The successful test approach allows engineers to study issues and improve parachute design.
MH-60S Knighthawk Helicopter, 4000 ft Drop Altitude
135,000 lb Sled
100,000 lbf of Pull Thrust
50,000 lb Tripod Structure
2,000,000 lb Concrete Anchors
300 hp Winch to Fish in Parachute
2600 ft 1-5/8" Technora® Rope (produced by Samson)
2000 lb Pulley
JPL clearance number: CL#14-0516
NAWCWD clearance number: 13-0171
Even given this is a video about testing hypersonic parachutes with rockets, steel and an SH-60, set to Metallica, the most American thing about this is that the test is using pounds-force instead of Newtons.
Congratulations to everyone involved in amazing test. The JPL and NAWCWD China Lake teams have been losing sleep for over a year figuring out the details of this crazy test event. Seriously, dropping a parachute from a helicopter and pulling it down with a rocket sled??
Your headgear is awesome Mike.
This was an awesome experiment. Good luck guys!
I salute the man/woman who designed this system
Rock n' Roll meets high speed parachute deployment tests! I guess the 'chute was too large for the Ames Research Center wind tunnel, so this provided a lot of cool video. Besides, it is kind of dark in the 80x120 Ames tunnel... and inside, it is absolutely HUGE.
Brilliant footage!
Jet Propulsion Laboratory is so very cool!
This stuff has got to be a 'blast' to work on!!!! ;-)
Well that kept me entertained.
That would be a helluva parasailing ride!
thank you, very cool
I hope Jebidiah made it out ok :-P
really really cool video
This looks like an awesome job... using a rocket sled to stress test a Mars lander parachute. The parachute failed, which I'm guessing means they get to do it again!
I got to machine that part pulled up at
where was pete mitchell ? nice sound track would of never suspected that from a nasa test clip // maybe think about doing a HHSTT clip awesome multi angle /alt camera work .. this was stellar ! maybe some narrations for posterity
well, exelent investigation. five stars
94000 lbf (47 metric ton) holy shit!
now that's badass
