I met Peter in 1991 in Cincinnati. They were the opening act for The Exploited and Biohazard and sadly they were booed off stage after only two songs. Some people thought they were racist because of some symbols they had on their gear. Anyway, Peter was soft spoken and humble and a real sweetheart and I felt awful about how the crowd treated them.
Nobody was saying TON or peter were racist back then. We weren't obsessed with racism back then like all these idiots are now. So thats a bunch of crap or just how you felt.
Was this part of the racism claims the narrator discussed in the video or was it just something the fans saw on the equipment and then said something when they took the stage.
Right before Peter passed away, he played a few shows with carnivore. The opening band on one of those gigs was The Banner, a phenomenal NJ hardcore band, my buddy Garret is the original guitarist and said back stage while Peter Steele was getting ready he was drinking wine and hitting this oxygen mask and says to him "HEY!, I really like your band, thank you for opening this gig right tonight!" What a great and down to earth human being! RIP Green Man!
I went backstage in louisville ky at a show and he had a panic attack or something. He bolted out the door they said he was having probs. Rest in peace Peter Steele.

There was an interview done way back when one of the band members was asked why Steele changed his music and image from what it was during his Carnivore years (my favorite) to what it became for Type-) negative and his response was "For pu**y". He said that the women, especially the Goth chicks that Steele was so fond of, loved his Type-O Neg persona and it was definitely a motivation. My first experience with this band was at a Halloween night show where they opened for Megadeth. I've been a fan ever since. It's true, though, that you can't think of Steele of ToN without thinking of the color green. lol
The first time they played in my area (I live in Albany, New York), they played at the South Troy Community Center! Lol...next show was at an actual club...
The story I remember as a kid is that they had all the merch made for Sub-Zero, and then found out they couldn't use the name, so they had to find a name that could use a circle with a negative symbol as a logo. No clue if it was true, but that's what I heard about their name.
Definitely, it is one of my all time favorite bands and "Retaliation" one of my absolute fav albums. The short guitar solo at the 3:52 mark on "Ground Zero Brooklyn" is my all time favorite from any band and any guitarist. Steele is saying: "We'll fight this war with germs and atoms, destroy our only hope, Our mutated decedents battle next with sticks and stones, F**K!" and them comes that glorious solo... Good Stuff!
I remember when I would go to their early shows that many times there was people outside protesting the shows. When people would give me flyers about why Type O/Carnivore was so wrong would question the person if they ever heard S.O.D. and other east coast bands that had not so much politicly incorrect humor to their lyrics. Here on the west coast people seemed to take such things so seriously I guess because of the hippy movement.
I actually literally bumped into him; after their set & during Danzig; after I had gotten my shirt: I apologized for bump & didn't realize that it was him, until I heard "Great shirt dude"
He should have stayed at the NYC parks department he was so happy there, we still need in his all-time and got to go home to his cats, and he loved the routine of working a regular job. Once he quit that job it was a count down. If they didn’t push him to go on tour he’d be happy and probably alive still. But then the music wouldn’t have reached so many people.
I was lucking to see them twice. It was fun to see the punk rockers come with their mohawks combed down and wearing black trying to fit in lol. RIP Pete.
I’ve listened to one song tonight July 2024 I’ve heard the bands name as a youngster I’ve watch a few interviews and I can honestly say I feel like I miss something about this guy just weird
"How could anyone possibly incorporate the influence of both The Beatles and Black Sabbath in any meaningful way into their own music",said no one who's ever listened to Type O Negative.
I have always suspected that Peter Steele had Marfans, but I have never heard of him being diagnosed. He certainly had a lot of the known symptoms, and even his cause of death is common among people with Marfans.
I had a friend in the mid 90s whose father thought he was gay and despised him. Then he put up a full sized poster of Bloody Kisses, things changed after that.
Liked most of the video but the end is incorrect. Peter died from spesis due to perforating diverticulitis. He had been taking care of himself after rejoining the church and there is no way to know for sure if his former lifestyle contributed to his death or not (diverticulitis can be hereditary). It should also be known that he was caring for his dying cat at the time of his death. Peter had been ill for days but refused to abandon his animal until he couldn't take the pain anymore. But by then it was already too late. RIP Green Man, you were a gentle giant that is sorely missed.
Guy partied like a rock star. No secret what killed him. Quote: " it's better to burn quickly and bright than slowly and dull without a fight" A lyrical acknowledgement of his seemingly forced existence. Amazing how such a tortured soul can make great art and then believe himself it is not good enough. Ce la vi

Hell, yeah. I've been on a big Type O kick, lately. Seriously one of the greatest bands of all time.
I met Peter years ago at a small club in PA .
Sea Sea's?
The first time they played in my area (I live in Albany, New York), they played at the South Troy Community Center! Lol...next show was at an actual club...
The story I remember as a kid is that they had all the merch made for Sub-Zero, and then found out they couldn't use the name, so they had to find a name that could use a circle with a negative symbol as a logo. No clue if it was true, but that's what I heard about their name.
Just listened too Bloody kisses the other day its always been my favourite Type O record
carnivore is pretty sick too
Definitely, it is one of my all time favorite bands and "Retaliation" one of my absolute fav albums.
Good Stuff!
@@vanhattfield8292I always thought he was yelling "Mark!" Cueing his solo
I know it's not your usual topic but I'd be interested in a piece on Roadrunner. They've had so many great bands over the years.
I remember when I would go to their early shows that many times there was people outside protesting the shows. When people would give me flyers about why Type O/Carnivore was so wrong would question the person if they ever heard S.O.D. and other east coast bands that had not so much politicly incorrect humor to their lyrics. Here on the west coast people seemed to take such things so seriously I guess because of the hippy movement.
as usual...good video.
I actually literally bumped into him; after their set & during Danzig; after I had gotten my shirt: I apologized for bump & didn't realize that it was him, until I heard "Great shirt dude"
Love this band!
That’s a good interview.. I remember that one @ 05:05
*eats popcorn*
He should have stayed at the NYC parks department he was so happy there, we still need in his all-time and got to go home to his cats, and he loved the routine of working a regular job. Once he quit that job it was a count down. If they didn’t push him to go on tour he’d be happy and probably alive still. But then the music wouldn’t have reached so many people.
I was lucking to see them twice. It was fun to see the punk rockers come with their mohawks combed down and wearing black trying to fit in lol. RIP Pete.
Great video.
I’ve listened to one song tonight July 2024 I’ve heard the bands name as a youngster I’ve watch a few interviews and I can honestly say I feel like I miss something about this guy just weird
Rip Green man
"How could anyone possibly incorporate the influence of both The Beatles and Black Sabbath in any meaningful way into their own music",said no one who's ever listened to Type O Negative.
I wrote a song for Peter called "Your Peter Steele" on RUclips
I have always suspected that Peter Steele had Marfans, but I have never heard of him being diagnosed. He certainly had a lot of the known symptoms, and even his cause of death is common among people with Marfans.
You put in work, you get results, they didn't sell out, much respect for staying true, nobody wanted to hear six foot gene simmons at times
Peter Steele ruled. He left us way too soon.
R.I.P 🤟 I love Type O Negative but it was not love ad first side. Later in life after a few years of pain and drugs use plus see nothing in life .
Most underrated band
I had a friend in the mid 90s whose father thought he was gay and despised him. Then he put up a full sized poster of Bloody Kisses, things changed after that.
💚🖤
Liked most of the video but the end is incorrect. Peter died from spesis due to perforating diverticulitis. He had been taking care of himself after rejoining the church and there is no way to know for sure if his former lifestyle contributed to his death or not (diverticulitis can be hereditary).
It should also be known that he was caring for his dying cat at the time of his death. Peter had been ill for days but refused to abandon his animal until he couldn't take the pain anymore. But by then it was already too late. RIP Green Man, you were a gentle giant that is sorely missed.
It’s speculated his hard lifestyle could have contributed to his death.
Guy partied like a rock star. No secret what killed him. Quote:
" it's better to burn quickly and bright than slowly and dull without a fight"
A lyrical acknowledgement of his seemingly forced existence. Amazing how such a tortured soul can make great art and then believe himself it is not good enough. Ce la vi
@@rnrtruestories He was hooked on white slavery (coke), so, it never helped him.
