      Hi Simon and thanks for the comment. Yes originally I was going to go down to London and then on from Paddington, but i was a bit limited by time in the end and you will see in the later videos of this weekend, I was pretty tired by the end of it! I think the Starcross to Dawlish bit, the Tamar crossing and Lostwithiel area were my favourite bits. Btw, Paddington will feature in the next leg (and the bear himself!).

    Great pictures and good music - what a route! Like you I prefer curtains. The problem with blinds is that they are usually shared between two seats whereas a curtain can be drawn across your section of the window. Curtains need a rail at the bottom to stop them flapping about when the train twists and turns.

    GWR h@vent provided sandwiches in First for many years, In 2004 I think on a Friday afternoon they gave you a glass of wine but they even charged £2 or £3 for some porridge on a breakfast service in First.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 года назад

      Hi John, fancy charging for porridge 🙄. I tell you what, I find myself harking back to the days of even two years ago when talking about catering (or lack of it) on trains atm. One of my favourite memories was travelling from Holyhead to Chester with Virgin on a very stormy day and I was the only one in First. Nice free glass of wine to go with sandwiches etc on this service. Well, the train got held in Bangor after a tree fell on the line and after an hour, the lovely crew brought out the rest of the (1L) bottle and said I might as well get stuck in! Needless to say, I did and I quickly forgot about the delay!

      @@LetsMakeaTrip my favourite First journeys was the 0930 ish Virgin Trains West Coast from Edinburgh Waverley to Euston. Breakfast, toast/cereal pastries, tea/coffee/ juice served on departure and bar and nibbles after Carlisle and each departure station and a snack around Birmingham. The other was the 0900 Kings Cross to Edinburgh. Again full breakfast on departure and bar after each station, Catering and alcohol back on these routes. My FGW experience was a 0735 to Gloucester from Paddington. A unique situation where first class was cheaper than standard but I could have got a near identical porridge for 99p from the McDonalds at Paddington platform 1 where the train left from. 🤷‍♂️

    I can’t believe you think 1st class seating is plush. Compared to the older but much better HST it succeeded it’s basic and rather spartan. The HST seat was a tastefully done leather with soft padding. The 800 series seating is back to cloth with hardly any padding. The HST seat had a decent partly reclined seat with further a recline button giving a decent recline. The 800 seating is much more upright and hurts a lot of people’s backs
    The HST seat had a socket and USB socket for each seat. The 800 seat looked as if there was just one shared between two seats. You didn’t show any further sockets. The lighting is appaling. No mood at all compared with other companies stock. Other than that, not much else was different. Although many passengers say they do find the underfloor engines louder than the HST which don’t have any underneath. The ride was better as a result. I personally found some bits and pieces were nightly and tartly already. Definitely a retrograde step overall
