Thank you for bringing this out. Almost all the brands these days are marketing their smartphones based on the HBModes. The way Google kept headlining the peak brightness modes on its new devices, I checked a Pixel 8 Pro at a BestBuy store, it definitely looked brighter than my Pixel 6 but not close to a Galaxy display. I knew something was wrong, but now I know what it actually was. ❤

That HBM is basically peak brightness in HDR mode, and only for limited amount of time. Also,Nits is a logarithmic unit and is not scaled evenly.

In OLED display there is also a thing called ABL(Automatic brightness limit). In 100% white display brightness wouldn't be same as 50% . Different brands set ABL differently.

Bhai ne samjhane ki puri kosish ki hai janta ko. Kuch points mai add karta hu
    1. Peak brightness window sizes pe measure hoti hai. Standard window size for measuring peak brightness is @ 10% window matlab white square covering 10% of the screen. Full screen brightness will always be lower to prevent burn in and heating of the phone. Jyada light jyada heat.
    2. White aquare jo use hoti hai wo high brightness pe mastered hoti hai aap koi bhi white square use nai kar sakte. If a white square is mastered @1000 nits it will not show 2400 nits.

Nits, a unit of luminance, measure the intensity of light emitted or reflected from a surface. In the context of phone displays, it quantifies the brightness level. Here's an overview of how nits work in phone displays and why lux may not be suitable for comparisons:
    1. **Nits in Phone Displays:**
    - Nits indicate the brightness level of a display. One nit is equal to one candela per square meter (cd/m²).
    - In phone displays, the higher the nit value, the brighter the screen can get. Brightness is crucial for outdoor visibility and enhancing user experience.
    2. **Peak Brightness:**
    - Peak brightness refers to the maximum luminance a display can achieve. It's particularly important for scenarios where ambient light is high, such as outdoors.
    - Phones often have an adaptive brightness feature that adjusts the display brightness based on ambient light conditions.
    3. **Measurement of Nits:**
    - Nits measure the light output directly from the display source, making them suitable for comparing the brightness of different screens.
    - Lux, on the other hand, measures the illumination of a surface and is influenced by the distance from the light source. It may not be an accurate metric for comparing the brightness of displays.
    4. **Why Lux Isn't Ideal for Comparisons:**
    - Lux is a measure of illuminance and considers the area over which light is distributed.
    - Since lux incorporates the area factor, it may not accurately represent the true brightness of a display, especially when comparing screens with different sizes.
    5. **Factors Influencing Peak Brightness:**
    - Display technology, such as OLED or LCD, can impact peak brightness capabilities.
    - Power efficiency, thermal management, and screen coatings also influence a phone display's ability to reach and sustain high brightness levels.
    6. **Use Cases for High Nits:**
    - High nit values are beneficial for outdoor use, where the screen competes with sunlight.
    - HDR content, which enhances the contrast and color range, benefits from high peak brightness to deliver a more immersive viewing experience.
    7. **Impact on Battery Life:**
    - Higher brightness levels generally consume more power, impacting the device's battery life.
    - Optimization of power management systems is crucial to balance brightness and energy efficiency.
I APPRECIATE HOW HE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING , VERY ACCURATELY STILL BEING VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND FOR A LAY MAN TO UNDERSTAND
In summary, nits measure the brightness of phone displays, indicating the intensity of light emitted. Peak brightness is crucial for visibility in various environments. Lux may not be suitable for comparing displays due to its dependence on area, making nits a more accurate metric for such evaluations.

For good visibility in daylight conditions, a monitor needs to possess a brightness level of 400-700 nits. However, a sunlight-readable display requires at least 1,000 nits or more for direct, bright sunlight viewing.😊

Watching 4k HDR videos in direct sunlight and the brightness you get is called 'peak brightness '..and it also depends on what display quality you have and how they tweak it.. samsung flagship handsets have top-notch display qualities so even if the number is less but in reality test they're boss😎.. samsung sony and Lg are top leading display companies.

Nits scaling is not proportional (even) as it increases. Also, look out for ideal brightness nits of your device as it's most useful and comparable. HBM, LBM, HDR mode nits are tuned differently by oems.

Brightness in nits also shows the bit depth. As the bit depth increases, the nits increases. In fact this numbers increases gradually because of HDR implementation in displays. In concern to HDR, that uses wide range of color spectrum and many standards for color calibration is in development. This is in Physics point of view.
Most of the current smartphone displays are of 8-bit color.
Some manufacturers says HDR capability in displays but there is no any scope in HDR standard to support 8-bit displays. They use trick called Frame Rate Control to avoid dithering and consequently banding.
To support modern HDR standards, like Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, displays needs to be atleast support 12-bit color code.

I was almost thinking about this ever since I got realme 11 Pro 5G but without knowledge of peak brightness or something as "nits". Thank you

Rakesh Bhai, Mujhe nhi lgta brightness testing fair way m hui, kyunki niche jo phone aap pakde the wo wla phone ke screen m light ka utna exposure nhi tha kyunki jo pkda tha wo thk uske samne tha jbki wo upper wla samsung phone pura exposed tha light m aur samne koi blockage nhi thi toh wo jda hi bright hoga na, issiliye jbb bahar testing krre the tbb samsung ka jda bright tha, aur jab ander testing kiye tbb esa koi scene nhi tha kyunki light evenly spread horha tha. I hope you understood my point. Waiting for your point of view....
