Absolutely love that guy!! Such a gentleman and can't thank him enough for inviting us to his home and blessings before we opened Ventiki. Look forward to seeing him again soon.
I've watched this three times. It's like being in a college Tiki class where you're learning and your professor is encouraging you to drink. Well done, Spike.
What an amazing episode Spike!!! Thank you!!!!! Sven should start a RUclips channel!!!! And takes us through his journey on Tiki!!! He should team up with an animator and Sven can narrate his stories!!!
Wow! I’m sure you could have made a 2 hour show with all the stories Sven has! Sipping Rum and chatting about Tiki with Sven sounds like an amazing evening.
Great show! I love hearing the history and how it connects to actual Polynesian culture! It's funny when I met my (now husband) and found out he was half Samoan and half Hawaiian I thought well he's gonna see my tiki mug collection and he's going to stop talking to me thinking im some weirdo whos into Polynesian pop. Quite the opposite, he loved it, started collecting mugs too, wanting to go to tiki bars. When his mom saw my Hawaiian print 50s style dresses she dug out bolts of fabric she brought from Samoan for me to make dresses with. Eventually I asked him "you don't find it offensive or feel like it's culture appropriation?" and his response was Polynesian people are too chill to care about stuff like that. So hearing Sven talk about how us outside of the culture worry more about it being offensive than those actually in the culture think about it was spot on, at least for my husband and his family!
That's great to hear. I always find it comical when someone professes to speak for a whole ethnic group and say that tiki is 'offensive' to them. The audacity in that is insane.
When people say there are no rules in tiki they are dead wrong. Yes, you can do whatever in your own bar but Sven documented what tiki culture was in Mid-Century America and that’s the stuff I love. Thanks Sven for all you’ve done and continue to do. And thanks, Matt for documenting what’s happening now and bringing us these great guests and cocktails.🔥🗿🍹🙏
Awesome to see Sven on the show and learn about his mug. I am a Trader Vic fanatic, his Mai Tai inspired me to start making Tiki drinks.....I gotta keep my eyes peeled for the next mug release.
Fantastic work. Like many people I am driven to Tiki by the drinks and the superficial aesthetic. This interview with Sven is really drawing me into the historical and artistic element as well. So many layers to this Tiki onion!
I'm trying to come up with another adjective to describe this show but "Great, fantastic, classic, amazing, brilliant, wonderful, legendary do the job! Might I add "awesome" show!
Man Spike. One of your best episodes ever. Sven was awesome and I really hope I can get my hands on one of those mugs. Awesome job as usual, but your shows seem to just get better and better. Thanks man.
I like Sven's style! He drinks more like I do. Classy guys like us don't have time for juicing and shaking. Just sip the ingredients. I have for sure sipped orange Curacao before lmao. Also the ending video with him reading and drinking is fantastic.
Such a delightful episode! Mahalos a plenty for creating this! Sven’s Book of Tiki was a huge inspiration for me back in the early oughts…but he now makes me wonder if it was my love for the Cramps that got me into tiki?
I have read Sven's book! Classic There was a Trader Vic's at Houston's Shamrock Hotel. The hotel is gone--overall no great loss. But I am old enough that I could have gone. Too bad Well, once Omicron dies back a bit I can revisit Lei Lo in my neighborhood...
Fantastic episode gentlemen. So informative and now I can’t wait to make a Tortuga! And the little vignette at the very end was one of my favorite parts. Beautifully shot. Cheers!🍹
Cool show Spike. I don't have Vermouth or Creme de Cacao. Maybe if I can find those flavors in 50ml airliner bottles, I might experiment. For Curacao, I've been suffering thru a flask of Gran Marnier. It works, OK in MaiTais.
Not sure about the drink - but what a great episode! I met and hung out with Sven at Tiki Fever a few months ago and knew he would make a great guest for my favorite show. Thanks for getting him on! If you were going to buy just one of his books, which would it be?
It's alcoholic....Yeah, but I don't think it goes to meetings..." Bad...doom,....ching. Good one...that almost slipped by...except for your sly smirk at the camera! :)
Love the episode, so good to actually see and hear Sven rather than just read about him and his works! Just a question on the "cocksmithing" side of things as the murky colour came up in the show, was there a reason you used brown creme de cacao vs white creme de cacao? The drink definitely has a reddish hue in the old menu pictures (which I'm guessing comes from the unhindered colour of the grenadine and Vermouth), plus Jeff Berry lists white creme de cacao in the grog log and Potions of the Caribbean. That being said I'm curious if the the trader Vic's bartenders guide specifies otherwise, and that Berry using the clear stuff is based off him going off the specs for the La Florida cocktail.
I enjoy most episodes too, but like think it misses the mark when you don’t have specific calls even down to brand of juice, bitters, etc not just rums. To present a drink that just willie nillie grabs bottles and calls it the same drink is just as bastardizing, especially bothered in the 1947 zombie. Like you know that had a v specific rum call to “make it work” and probably was lots of experimenting/wasting rums before finding the calls.

That lovely Mug Face Looks Like It's Borrowed From A 1930 Parisian Modernist Sculpture By Brancusi, Who Was Himself Partly Influenced By Impressionist Paul Gauguin. FYI - Tortuga was the tiny legendary late 17th century Caribbean pirate island HQ wedged between Cuba, Jamaica & Hispanola - far away from anything Polynesian. The island's name comes from describing the many sea turtles (once) found there & the fisherman on the tiny island who used a special wood rack to made smoked turtle meat- La Bocaneros -and the origin of the famous pirate nickname name; 'Buccaneers'.
Could you do me a favour? There is also a cocktail called Tutututpo Tiki on the Trader vics menu. It's my absolute favourite drink. But I don't know the ingredients. Could you maybe figure that out? :)
Wait. You talked about the mug, but not the new book. What's it about? It's not on Tiki Farm anymore. I think it's time for a re-print of The Book of Tiki.
@@BreezewayCocktailHour I originally bought the clear plastic version of that jigger because of your show. All the lime juice that passed through cooked the plastic to nearly illegible. Now I have the stainless "Spike-approved" version and it is holding up great!

What a great episode with papa Sven! ❤️❤️❤️

OMG what a classic show! Sven was awesome, Spike was on point with questions and pacing the show…a must-see for all Tiki Ohana👏👏👏😍😍👍👍👍
Thanks, George!!
The man himself! My ol pal Sven in the Breezeway! This made me smile big time!
Awesome. No other word approaches how special this episode is.
Awesome to see Sven on the show. A German we are very proud of :)

I totally agree. Sven and I talked about that... everyone always gets hung up with the insane amount of work that is editing.
Sven is great. Generous with his knowledge and passion for Tiki culture.
Sven sounds exactly like Hans Zimmer. I just ordered his TIKI POP book. I can't wait to check it out. He seems like such a cool guy.
What a wonderful way to spend an evening!

Hi Spike and Sven 🍍🍑☀⛱
Anyone knows the Recipe for a Drink called „The Potwasher“? It was served at Mama Gruber‘s Fishhouse, in the 70‘s.
Wait. You talked about the mug, but not the new book. What's it about? It's not on Tiki Farm anymore. I think it's time for a re-print of The Book of Tiki.

A dash is more like 1/4 tsp, not 1/4 oz. Way too much. I really enjoyed the episode, though.
As per page 27 of Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide from 1972, a 'dash' is denoted as 1/4 ounce.
