Love your Chanel I've learned a lot thanks you I about fell off my chair when you said Wild like my hair hahaha It's like your thought on tree branches kinda grows that way 😊
Ahhhhhh. Another great video, Nigel. I'm wondering if you've ever taken a close look at a Japanese Holly as a project tree. I got one at a local Wal-Mart store and LOVE it. It has naturally SMALL, SMALL, SMALL leaves and thick growth of fine limbs that would lend themselves to any shape you wish to form them into....especially those flat-topped African trees you enjoy so much. When I got mine, it was in a rounded ball and the tiny leaves carpeted the entire surface of that ball. Anyway, if you haven't looked at the Japanese Holly, you will be pleasantly surprised. I'm looking for another one.
Hey Mr. Saunders. I just wanted to say that in order to trigger the bougainvillea to flower, you have to underwater it for a little while. Just until the leaves wilt for a day or two, then continue to water it as normal. You might have already found this out, but I just wanted to let you know if you read this comment. I first found this out when I had left my plants alone for a week. Came back and the bougainvillea was all wilted and looked sad and thirsty. I watered it thoroughly, then the next few days or a week later it started to flower profusely. Just letting you know from my experience. I also googled it and did research. The flowering is triggered when the plant thinks it’s about to die, so it sends out a bunch of flowers in hopes of continuing its species
I use Teflon tape to position roots or branches on a “gentle” way. It doesn’t leave any mark at all. One problem is that the strength fades away over time, but it might be a good option for gently position that root.
You are welcome. I can send you some video or photo if you wish. Nevertheless, it is simply a gentle way to apply a force on the branches or roots. I also use for clump style since the tape applies a gentle pressure on the trunks helping them to merge smoothly, but not leaving a mark.
That would be great if you can send photos or video, I could show it in an upcoming video! My email address is.... thekwbonsaisociety@gmail.com Thanks Alvaro!
I have some little lemon seeds growing im thinking about letting most grow out but keep a few to make bonsai trees from i have 10 growing so far im going to try and make 2 or 3 of the bonsais
Hello sir. I m leave from india and big fan of u. I have always follow ur trick and tips from my bonsai plants. Results are much better to my hard working.
@ 15:50 all I could see was that Octopus face pirate (Davy Jones) from Pirates of the Caribbean... I think you should put a subtlety buried treasure chest under the tree, and set roots over it Nigel
That's the whole thing with life I think. Sometimes you just have to accept things the way they are and move ahead. That tree is gorgeous. It looks real, I like Bonsai that look like a tree. There are some nice works of art out there, but I like mini versions of trees. Maybe cause I'm a mini version of a people... A people McNugget.
I've learned a cool trick from someone else. Run a wire through fish tank tubing and use that to anchor your limbs and roots. It helps keep the marks off.
It could look even better if you reduce the size of the canopy I think. I completely agree with your more natural approach to styling your trees, but I think with this one you could maintain a natural look while keeping the canopy a bit smaller. As it is now it's quite a bit wider than the pot and compared to the height of the trunk, the size of the canopy takes away a bit from keeping the tree looking really miniature, as you always say yourself, like a giant tropical tree. Beautiful nonetheless, and that bougainvillea too! I've got a ficus carica, one year old, grown from cutting, I can only hope to get it anywhere near the stature of this ficus microcarpa of yours!
@Christopher David Lunn what kind of pot is it in. A large pot could help a lot. Tons of root growth means tons of top growth. If the roots are restricted the tree will stay miniature.
@@Jacob-ot3qw It was sold to me as root stock. It is in a large pot. I am going to check to the roots, clean it up a bit and report it in New soil. Was considering air layering it. Is there anyway I could send you photographs. E.g. messenger, email?
When you are doing show prep on plants with a waxy surface to the leaves, like this Ficus, do you ever shine the leaves by lightly buffing them with a terry cloth towel? I wonder if adjusting the fertilizer to low nitrogen might help stimulate flower production in a Bougainvillea. Edit; I found one fertilizer specifically formulated for Bougainvillea flowering that is 6 - 8 - 10. The site mentioned that in North America they flower best when the length of daylight and darkness are about the same, that is spring and fall. Apparently, since the plant is tropical, this arrangement mimics its natural setting.
This is probably a newbie question but after placing the moss and sand on the surface of the soil how does one kno when it needs watered you kno cause with the normal soil u can see the surface get dry but with the moss I guessing it’s harder to tell I’m wanting to moss a couple of mine so I’m just wondering thank you all in advance
Get familiar with your tree before planting any moss on it. After a while, you will know if it needs water just by lifting it and feel it's weight. Then moss can come :)

Hey Nigel. I noticed you used to always plant moss on your trees right when you repotted them. I don’t see you so that much anymore unless your going to show the trees. Just wondered why?
Most of the taper comes from keeping the root base radial and shallow. The tree will get this flare at the base of the trunk and then over the years it will become more and more pronounced as it grows. I have had to prune off many branches that keep trying to grow on the trunk over the years and sometimes aerial roots also if they get too big. The secret is to keep working on the roots!
HI Nigel, I love your channel. I wonder: when people send you stuff, how do they get hold of your postal address? I have something for you, but have no idea where to send it. Thanks, keep it up!
Hi Nigel, In your previous video you picked some kind of moss you called "liver worth?" why? are they harmful to bonsai or just for the look? Lots of it has grown around the big ceder pot. Should I remove them?
Would you suggest using hydrogen peroxide and a brush on any trunks? Like a boxwood with similar algae/moss buildup as the microcarpa? As always love the channel!
I love it!! I love the natural look with the moss and sand. Your are the best!! I love watching what you do!
Thank you so much!
I can't believe how much moss you have just growing everywhere, quite amazing i do say.
Yes, I think we have a good climate for moss, when the summer gets hot it gets humid also. Thanks Yeetius!
Every stroke of work on that ol Ford... is a savings for its future... took a lot of work... great job. Nigel!
Thank you Mary, no word on the truck yet, but I'll get it back working again!
i really like the focus and depth of field in this video. that newish camera is really performing well.

Usually you can do that but with the root he wants to move over a little, a hooked wire with tubing on it will hold it in place.

you can use hair ties to tie the tree with then will expand alittle so you don get the mark on the tree

My ficus is sending out stunted leaves curled and tiny....HELP!
Mine did that after it was severly shocked of overwatering, repotting, replacment, & heavy pruning. (rookie mistakes...) What is your tree growing in?
Does the sand have any benefits to the trees or is it just for looks/show?
