I googled this and 'Jude' is set between 1855 - 1885. At16.30 it says Jude was scaring birds for 6d per day! In 1959, My grandad told Me that when He was 12, (in 1886) He earned a penny per hour scaring birds, in Dorset, (His very first paying job). 7 x 12 hour days paid Him 7/- per week. I was curious but it all ties in!

Now, at 60, I feel so bad for Jude, so angry with the woman he loved that I won't use her name and disgusted with them both for the horrible end of their children. That said, I read it every couple years. I end convinced I won't read it again but, it draws me. Have you listened to Mayor of Cadterbridge; Far From The Madding Crowd or Dickens' Our Mutual Friend? Spotify has the last, unabridged by Grianne Regan, the narrator. So many characters and the voices she creates is simply fantastic.
