Chinese scholars at the time disguised criticisms in the form of poetry. I don't remember the entire thing, but there's a whole lore about the 7 sages who partied over music and poetry to criticise the governments of their time. Ironically, the story was about the downfall of Cao Wei and it's transition to the Jin Dynasty.

Huh no... first, this is Tong gate which is located in the outskirts of Chang An, Fan Castle is in Wan, Ma Chao was never close to Jing province so he never got to Fan, he stood in Sichuan and participated in the taking of Han Zhong and some of Zhuge Liang's northern campaings, in which he died of illnes. The guy you see killed here is some random soldier that looks like Ma Chao because he has the same haircut and beard, which seems to be the comonn looks in Xi Liang troops in this drama.
actually he is not. during his time, ma chao was seeing as untrustworthy and barbaric...he left his father and join han sui, attack tong pass that resulted his entire family got executed, later he left his wife and children to join zhang lu, then later betray zhang lu and defect to liu bei....ma chao once brutally killed a lady because she scolded him. Than the ferry guy got killed by an arrow and Xu Chu still holding the saddle drops the sword and picks up an oar and slowy pushes the ferry boat back to other river bankment earning himself a promotion.

The series had a 8.6 score last I checked, it is fairly good. Of course it shortened a lot of narratives and cut out many roles, I guess for the ease of general public understandings.
